Thinking about going to a National this summer... I've been to several SX races over the past ~15 years but never an MX event, and thought this summer would be the best year for my first with Tomac potentially retiring after '23 (although who knows at this point), Sexton and Ferrandis being great challengers, and Jett moving up to the 450 class. What tracks in the eastern half of the US would you guys say are the best viewing experiences? I'm in FL and am not really interested in any of the races out west, but I'm open to anything as far west/north as Millville.

Excellent post!

Since you mentioned a willingness to go as far as Minnesota…Millville really is beautiful and has an honest Sand Section that a Floridian may really dig. The History and Heritage of Unadilla along with how nice the facility is…and it’s location…make that a solid choice. In your “travel radius”/your neck of the woods…you’ve also got Budds Creek, Southwick, Red Bud, Ironman and High Point.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. I am kinda partial to Red Bud for the 4th of July. 💪🏻🇺🇸

No matter which one you go to, come back and tell us about it afterwards. Have a Great Time!

A lot of people seem to sing Millville's praises. Appreciate the thoughts, there's a lot of good options and things to consider so it's tough. I might make it a road trip, so that really gives an advantage to Budds & High Point. If I fly, Millville & Red Bud are in the picture. Either way I'm super pumped, I've always had a good time at SX races but I feel like SX is so tight & technical that it kind of limits the spectacle of speed that the elite guys can put on display.

The one in the Southeast.  Oh, wait...Whistling

From a viewing standpoint, Thunder Valley is hard to beat and the scenery is next level.  It's also not out in the boonies.

Unadilla could be awesome but they need to buy some grass seed, quit making it a rut fest, and knock down some of the artificial jumps to bring it back to its former state.

Southwick is a cool venue and usually has some great racing.

Washougal is a beautiful venue and a fun race to watch. Been there a bunch and raced there 3 times.

I'm considering going to either Red Bud, Thunder Valley, or Millville this year.

Redbud is great for spectating if you plan to move around. There are basically two main hillsides, each viewing half the track, and you can walk between them in 60 seconds (depending on crowd density). Millville is much bigger if you consider walking around the perimeter of the track. Also a long walk from parking and likely further from hotels. Just things to be aware of, they're both awesome and I wish I lived closer to Millville so I could go every year.

After not attending a national since Gatorback 97 a buddy of mine convinced me to go to Unadilla last year!   It was so awesome.    Walked around the entire track the entire day and it was so much fun.    We are planning on hitting Lakewood this year.

Seems like dilla isn’t getting a lot of love, you can see quite a bit of the track from the back hill.

without a doubt Southwick is horrid for spectating, if that’s all that is of concern.

id say redbud is an awesome “experience” (been to both MXON and one national there), viewing on par with unadilla or maybe a tad worse.

Just wanted to check back in - we went to High Point and had a great time. I'm not sure how many people usually come out to a National, but it sure felt absolutely packed on Saturday! The track was pretty muddy during qualifying, but started to shape up pretty well throughout the afternoon. Honestly enjoyed it a good deal better than an SX, was definitely more of an overall experience besides simply the racing. In between Q2 and the first moto I walked around pretty much the whole perimeter of the track to take it in and see some different vantage points. Will definitely be going to more Nationals in the future!

Millville Spring Creek MX the best track in the US IMO, go race amateur day and look at the many states represented it's unreal the competition just on the amateur race day. Practice day you can ride until you drop. The camping the party's at night the bicycle track, the mini track - It's all just a A+ event. And the track has everything a pure motocross track can have, the hills are way steeper than they look on TV and the sand wash will work you!

High Point is one of my favorite Nationals. Southwick is the closest one for me and I've been many times. I like how locals can do well. But  as far as watching the race goes, You only get to see a limited area at a time . High point  You can follow the race around the track. Southwick  has few areas that You can see a large amount of the track  without moving.  Budds Creek is another one that is good as far as seeing a lot of the track without having to walk around the entire track. Unadilla is pretty spread out and the steep hills on the sides of the track make it harder to walk around than some others. But You can see a lot of the track from a lot of the viewing areas. Only having a few blind spots if you are in the right spot. It takes more effort to walk around the track than the others though with how steep the hills are.  I have not been in a few years, so maybe they have done something to make it easier to walk around . Its not really bad, but coming from SX races , its more of a hiking experience.     Steel City was one of my favorites and I'm sad its gone. Binghamton was not bad either. It was more compact than Unadilla with similar dirt. I stayed at the track most of the time I went. But I was going with people racing the national most of the time.   Southwick is the easiest to find places to eat and hotels close by.   Binghamton had more stuff close by than Dila. We used to go drive go karts after  Saturday qualifying was over . Back in the days of 2 day Nationals.

I prefer the Outdoors to SX myself. It has more of a real racing feel to it for me. SX has always felt like a Carshow with a dirtbike race.

Hey Tom! I ended up getting to attend the High Point MX unexpectedly too! We drove out to visit our son & his family for birthdays (his 30th, his son’s 1st!) and were able to get over for the race! It ended up being a fabulous experience! I thought the facility was great and really enjoyed how much of the track we could see from the hill we were on! What a great way to spend Father’s day!           😎 👍❗️

Good to hear you had a good time with your son & family on Father's day weekend! Like myself, it was my dad's first pro National, so it was really cool to experience that with him.

Cheers!

The last or second to last Glen Helen national was perfect. Overcast with a slight sprinkle at some point. Glen Helen USGP in 15 or 16 was the opposite… not a cloud in the sky and 100+ out. I’d gladly go back for a national in either conditions

I should have mentioned it was my Son’s first outdoor national MX too! I have lost count how many SX’s I’ve been to, he has been to numerous SX’s as well and I have been to Unadilla, Washougal & Thunder Valley once each but this was our first trip to High Point! I thought the venue was great, viewing was excellent and it was awesome being able to bring in your own chairs, cooler & snacks! Outdoor MX is THE heart & soul of our beloved sport and I’m glad I got to spend Father’s day Saturday watching MX with my son! 😎 👍❗️

Red bud by far is the best track in the States. Washougal is probably the second best track to attend and Unadilla is great as well. Red Bud would be my top pick then Washougal. Any track in California is completely overated. South Wick is decent but sits in city limits.

I totally disagree Millville is so much better than Red Bud.

I was really surprised at how great that place is.  I'd like to hear ML or Lewis do an interview with a group of riders about the different tracks.  What they like/hate.

I've been to Pala, Hangtown, Glen Helen, Thundervalley, Iron man, Budds Creek, Freestone, Rio Bravo (lots of the old tracks).  I plan on hitting the rest of the circuit since I'm retired and every day is Saturday now.Whistling

I can honestly say...Ironman is worth seeing.

It looks like a cool track with some elevation and as long as the weather is good, the track would be fun to watch.   I was going to the 6 nationals on the east coast every year for a while. A few friends of mine were fast enough to go and try qualifying at them and I had a toy hauler so I drove us all around. Great times!   High Point, Southwick, Budd's Creek, Unadilla, Binghamton, and Steel City were the tracks we went to.

Southwick was our local race and they all made it in there. A couple of them made it into the motos at the other rounds  too but Southwick was always fun to see the people I rode with go out and run with the top guys and beat them sometimes.

The Irish MXON team rented my Toy Hauler in 07  for the MXON at Budds Creek .  That was an amazing race to be at in the pits and being a part of the team in a small way. I have so many amazing memories from the drives out to and back, and the races. Someday I'll get back out on the road and hit some racing up again.

Hell yeah.  I do try to meet and chat with the privateers at hotels, eating joints, etc.  Especially their parents.  Such a different perspective than the big boys.

It was really cool. I wanted to be able to ride at that level , but I was not close in speed, and got hurt a lot. So providing a place to stay and a ride to the races for my friends and helping them live their dreams was super fun. We got to go to some cool private tracks . Unadilla at night was pretty wild  more than a few times. I would recommend anybody that has the chance to do it to go for it!  I spent 1000's on Diesel and racked up 1000's of miles  and it was a bargin!

Saturday practice & a Super series race on Sunday.  4 days of riding.  Amateur day in 97 had like 1,400 it was nuts but So Fun. I burned laps the day after the national. The track was so much smoother. Pic is 2nd or 3rd tank Monday. I hit the post race party in Rochester a lot of the riders partying.

Flame me if you want, Redbud isn't where we go now.   Fences are moved way way back from the track...I like to feel the bikes hitting berms, newer layout is worse than previous layouts, and it has less trees  for shade on the back hillside of the track.   Millville and Highpoint are our tracks to spectate...Ironman is 20 minutes away so yeah we have to go.  Need to go to Unadilla just once.

Went to my first National in 1986. Went to Millville. I've been to Lakewood and twice when it was at Freestone, (no longer in TX). But I make the trek from TX every other year to Millville. Will be there again this year, July 15th. Surprisingly that track has remained much the same as it was in 86'. It is such a great atmosphere, and the track is so challenging. Great spots for viewing. Typically great weather. If you go once, you'll be returning. I wish I could go every year!!

Can only list where I have been...

High Point and Ironman, followed closely by Millville and Thunder Valley for spectating.

Red Bud for the spectacle of motocross...  Harder to watch the race, but the atmosphere is hard core.

Hope to hit Washougal, Budds Creek and Unadilla in the next 3 years...

754D842C-75BC-4B83-B270-F66925308DB0.jpeg?VersionId=pkhdWG5fhW5w1SLfmDThiainO2LVVSSThe 90,s red Bud track was much better than today’s track. The mags always took pics of the 2nd double, best jump on the track. The ski jump went straight threw the loamy valley into a step up. Damon huffman,s kx125 sounded so sweet he had it working the upper mid perfectly. So stylish & smooth 3-4 months after a reconstructed knee. He had to do a qualifier , big holeshot & lead. Pic of Ohio transmission power lines down 6-16 . I parked at 100mm on 6-15 tornadoes then 70 mph wind with massive sheets of rain. The Pa. Round got lucky the storm didn’t go that direction. I started at breeze wood Pa. Pu at Williamsburg gps wanted rt22 I would’ve gone past steel city trk then but shot i99 down to i76. A mtn just east of pu had 30+ % grade . Rt22 is scenic but I hv to push to get to Chicago. Ohio again 21 mi from Indiana 80 mph wind with rain& tornado warnings, 89 & muggy to 62 in 1/2 a mi. W. Indiana another storm RBUd is close. Enter Chicago land another storm but not as hard. A massive pileup tho on 294 s.  The ne had high winds & a ton of rain too. Va. Fri it was like a tropical storm 150 ft big trees bent ovr & lots of gusts of rain.  Not sure what is going on with the weather the last 6 weeks but it’s brutal.  I would think 1 of the Nationals would get some.  The Pa. Rnd got super lucky that the track wasn’t washed away because all week in northern Pa. It rained hard.

I have been going to most of the nationals east of the Mississippi plus Millville and Hangtown since 1976

IMO …. Go to a track you haven’t been to before and it will be a new unique experience.

Being a long time fan Steel City being in a valley was by far #1 the best viewing track. Worst was Kenworthys.
