Anyone seen a 22 yz450 break in half yet? Now you have. This was done at a harescramble in Florida. Yamaha offered to give him a new frame but he has to pay to have it professionally assembled, that doesn’t include whatever else is destroyed on the bike. He bought a ktm recently btw and this is the way this bike will stay

I dunno what looks worse the frame or the leg fracture. Ouch.
We”ll …..did he hit a tree at high speed?
Sucks he got hurt. What caused the frame to break? Kind of useless without context
He did not. One of the A riders behind him watched the whole thing. They were 4th wide at the end of a straight away. That was the first thing we all said.

Yes it does. To be honest no one knows. He went back a few weeks later on his sxs once he was somewhat mobile again, and there was nothing in the trail he could hit where his line was. Just some wrappers from the medic crew is all that was there. We have talked to several professionally and myself included think it was poor penetration on the welds with weak material. His brother in law has the exact same bike, the welds on his look much better in terms of penetration and how the bead is laid out.
Wow… now that is scary!
Is it possible to get some close up shots of where it broke? It looks like there's oxidation in some of the breaks. If so, this has been been partially broken for a while, and just finally gave out.
Reminds me that we all should inspect our bikes thoroughly a bit more often.
I hope your friend heals up well!
Thank you! I’ll see what we can get soon. He’s back working and riding again, this happened a few months back we just have been waiting to see what Yamaha was going to do. All he wanted was the bike fixed honestly. I’ll check the oxidation next time I see the bike, good sight!
It’s a bummer Yamaha was demanding it be rebuilt by a licensed dealer. Feels like with the right relationship with a dealer you could work around this but it would be the dealers neck on the line.
Sounds like a bad day at the track
I'm thinking Yamaha may want the dealer to reassemble it so they can attempt to figure out what went wrong. JB: Has your friend tried to get Yamaha to pay the labor costs?
I'm going with the leg fracture. Parts you can get. Glad to hear he's up and around.
Thats scary!!!! Yamaha should pay for all his costs!!!
The title of this thread is "Yamaha doing KTM things". Then once this happened, your friend went out and bought a KTM. Why did he not just buy a 2023 Yamaha YZ450 ?
Put that bike on display somewhere around DaytonA for bike week.. Maybe show it around the stadium before the SX race…. Yamaha probably enjoy the publicity 👍
If you want race ready equipment, for a reasonable cost, straight out of the dealership (like motocross bikes are) then things like this are always an outside chance unfortunately. Similar to a near new engine blowing up, we ask a lot of out of a small single cylinder engine.
I'd be pissed don't get me wrong, especially with a resulting injury, and I understand people saying Yamaha should pay given the bike is pretty fresh, and given its age I'd agree it would be a welcome good will gesture, but it's never that clear cut.
My money is on a previous crack growing also, as mentioned above. If it's a shitty weld or a material or manufacturing defect this is all void obviously, they should stand by that.
There is a very simple explanation why they wouldn't cover the medical costs.
If they covered it in this scenario they would have to cover any cost that someone may incur while riding one of their off-road products. It would set a precedent in a court case for injuries which I'm sure Yamaha is avoiding at all costs.
pay him and have him sign an NDA
Pit Row
Because the cranks are blowing in the 23 yz450...
What race did it happen at? I saw he had it for sale at our race (Alligator Hare Scramble.)
Wow....that is bad. The leg injury is worse.
Oh the irony to the title of this thread. Try to drag KTM into a Yamaha catastrophic failure but yet the owner/rider bought a KTM after this fail. Seems logical to me lol.
Hog Waller
Got my attention. How many have you heard of?
I have one exactly the same, the leg that is.
He had a bad taste from Yamaha. The ktm is now for sale also. Doesn’t like how it handles lol
A friend of mine sent me this on new years day. Apparently someone he knows in FL hit a kid on an 85 on track and snapped the YZ in half. Kid on the 85 was fine. obviously this one didn't break at the welds. This one is a 2020

Bet the leg was cheaper to repair.
I doubt it.
