Not sure how dry it will be by Saturday. Looks pretty wet

Both Mom and Dad took me racing before I could drive myself. Both supported my interest in MX....but when I wanted my 1st bike, they told me I had to earn it. I worked around the neighborhood to buy a friends broken down 77 YZ-80 (I think it was $175.00)....of course it needed parts so had to earn money for those too. I learned from my parents early on the value of work/money and responsibility...a valuable lifelong lesson. Dad also showed me how to work on my own bikes. He split the cases on that YZ-80 because the crank was bent and he made sure I had my hand in the tear down and re-assemble.
Dad used to drive home from work (probably 40 miles) and then drive us out to Indian Dunes (another 40 or so miles) on Friday nights for racing. Sunday race days too.
The night before San Diego amateur SX, we spent the night in a motel on Hotel Circle....rolled the bike into the room for security. lol
Mom and sis hamming it up...
Why, have you been to it? Just curious because I haven’t been to it yet.
LOL....those were in-betweener boots. I had outgrown my Scotts and couldn't find anything that fit right. Later I ended up with leather Gaernes....

I've driven by Snap Dragon many times but never been inside of it, only seen pictures/video. I liked how supercross and motorsports in general were handled at Qualcomm "back in the day" and hope to see that environment come back at Snap Dragon. Plus it doesn't hurt that Snap Dragon is in a much better location than Petco.
Was that '83, or late '82? I could have sworn '83 was the year they ran the track up into the stands where the construction is (behind Miller Mountain in your photo).
I WANT that truck!
Definitely Nov 6th 1983....I have the results pamphlet.
I seen a video of someone walking around a few monster trucks after this event. In the 30 seconds of walking the person did in the video, it was ankle deep slop.
It would be miserable to wash those trucks.
Should be interesting to see how the track build goes, they going to need some sun on that dirt before anything gets built.
I was there last night. It will be a great venue for a Supercross race. Not a bad seat in the house, tons of food and drink areas, and the pits will be at the stadium (not like petco where they were a couple blocks away, and the parking will be way better then petco.
With a couple days of Sun and the low humidity here, the dirt dries fairly quick. Hopefully they skip press day riding and prep more for Saturday. See you guys there!
Definite brainfart on my part, I was thinking '83 was the year they ran into the stands and Glover won, but I think that was '84. '83 was the year The Dogger won on his store bought YZ250.
for those not familiar with the area, the rain is a non issue. The major storm was up north, we had some rain, no biggy.
Man, seeing those pictures from Magoofan really makes me wish they would bring back the Sunday SX Futures races. My buddy and I qualified for the first (and only) SX futures final in Las Vegas at the 2019 Monster Cup and it was such an incredible experience, definitely one of my favorite memories. It was pretty surreal to be able to go to Monster Cup in person, then to be able to ride that track and experience what it was like to bomb into that sand section wide open firsthand was pretty incredible. I don't know what killed that off but I miss it, riding (or at least trying to ride) those tracks was really a lot of fun.
I had the same opinion as a local, but after I went to Petco for games and races I realized what a shit hole Qualcomm had become. Things like food options, comfort, etc. According to football players, the infrastructure was terrible by comparison to the other stadiums they play in. Simple things as simple as phone chargers in their locker rooms. SDSU managed to get it built for less the $400 million. Looking forward to Snapdragon SX this weekend.
I never raced at Jack Murphy stadium, but my daughter did ! This was at a MTEG "Ultra cross" They had bikes, little "ultra light" 4 wheeled oddyssey looking things, quads, trucks, and kids on pw 50's.
Uhh, we got so much rain these past few days. Nothing like Northern California but enough to cause some trouble. Hope we get a nice, dry track Saturday.
I thought you were more concerned about a riders season being ruined because of a DNF than sitting in the rain?
Pit Row
Looks like an 83 yz 125 to me.
They had great power, from 9000 to 10000 rpm
Yup...and 83 YZ125. Loved that bike. It was bullet proof.
On the original topic.....it's still fricken raining here in San Diego!
same streets flood every year, mainly in Mission Valley. The news crews set up there and wait for a dumb ass to try and cross. Inevitably someone will try to drive across and have to be, "rescued". San Diego has almost nothing to talk about other than the weather. When it does rain they all freak out. We want to be special. The northern part of our state went through the real deal. Not a couple flooded streets that flood every year with the same videos over and over.
For those asking about '82 vs '83 track layout, Racer X posted the '82 track map on their IG page:
I remember one year they made a track that went over the goalpost, between the uprights. 1980 or '81, if I had to guess. I still remember Larry Huffman's booming-echo voice on the radio commercial, touting the "GOAL (goal) POST (post) JUMP! (jump, jump, jump....)" Good days.
I raced there in 2003 on amateur day. Even with the track massively modified for amateurs, it was an eye-opener. Supercross is not easy.
Nice!
This is the 83 track map from my amateur pamphlet....
This track layout is exactly as I remember it.....except some of the features aren't shown as they were on race day.
Hopefully this holds and we have a good track Saturday night. Those full sun days will do wonders.
Dang! The most expensive seats are $18! That's $53.64 in today's money. The cheapest seats this weekend are $65.
It's a damn good thing nobody in charge can figure out how to "Grow the Sport" or no one could afford to watch it.
I'm really wondering how this is going to play out, not super confident at this point. It's currently raining (10 min. from stadium). It wasn't supposed to rain today and there might be more on Thursday. It poured HARD throughout last night at the stadium. Even before the rain today, it was cold and damp so not like the dirt has been baking or drying out much.
Melt? Um ok...
Chocolate milk ?
Langham, was that from San Diego this past weekend? Doesn't look great, hope they can pull it off.
Post a reply to: San Diego SX ?
