I have a 2005 YZ250F, mint! I have seen worse newer bikes!! It is all how you take care of, if you tell yourself "meh I only have for one year, so I won't maintain it." Flog it!!

My 2008 rmz is going on its 2nd year.2008 was the first year since 1975 that I didn't buy myself a new bike.Well from 75 - 89 the parents sprung for the bikes.This will be the 1st time I'll be racing a two year old bike and if the economy doesn't come back or bike prices don't go down next year will be the 1st time I race a 3 yr old bike and so on,and so on,and so on. The way I see it is I'm not going to trade a bike I own outright for a down payment on a new one. 8k for a new bike is just stupid. I'll use the $200 a month I'm saving for gas and entry fees.

raced my '96 CR250 from '96 to '02. kept trying the new models but they weren't as good as the old dog. thing was still mint after 6 yrs of racing when i sold it. best bike ever.

I have an 06 RM250 that I got brand new out of a crate at the beginning of last year. I promptly sold the 4 stroke arsenal I had and race it in both classes. I won't buy a new one unless there are any updates in 2-stroke technology.

Still riding the '06 250 SX and would love a new 2010 450 SXF but near eight grand and I dont do that much modern racing these days anyhow it may suffice till some deals come along..
Always generally got a new one every couple of years when I was racing every weekend tho..

I built a 74 CR125 and a 74 CR250 for vintage racing and have been racing the two of them off and on since 1992. Stiil two of the most competitive bikes in their classes so absolutely no reason to replace them. As far as new bikes, I have a 2001 YZ250F and my oldest son has a 2004 CRF 250. We learned from our mistakes and have gone back to two strokes for the most part but we will keep them after the outrageously expensive overhauls they both required with fairly low hours on them. Plus regardless of the ten grand or so of lightweight titanium, magnesium and carbon parts on mine neither one of them are worth anything as far as resale goes. They don't get ridden much any more but the Honda appears to be going south again. Just bought the youngest son a mint 08 KTM144 . It's so much fun it should be outlawed! Oldest son picked up a really nice 04 RM125 a few weeks back and we have Jesse at Williams Motorwerx building a 03 KX153 stroker engine for a 07KX250F conversion in the garage right now. So, for what it's worth, the big four has not gotten any new bike money from me since these two four stroke floppers I bought last.

Bought my 2006 KX450 new in '06 that I still have and it's the longest I've ever owned the same dirt bike. Before that I bought a new KX250 in '98, '99, '01, '02, '03, '04, and '05. I also have my 1979 KX250 A5 that I bought and restored a couple of years ago and I'll keep that one forever. I still have my '04 KLX110 too...

My income is about 1/3 what it used to be. I used to never have a bike more than 2 years. Well I'm on a 2005 RMZ450...that's how bad it been. I just can't see throwing cash down on a new bike when the money is so hard to come by anymore. Besides the 05 RMZ still runs pretty good.

Have a 2006 YZ250. Between there not being any significant changes after 2006 for the YZ and also spending my bike budgeted money on a couple of post vintage bikes the last few years, I've been happy with keeping what I have. In the past, I was usually getting a new bike every 3 years.

I was buying a new CRF450 every year since 03. Just because I was getting a great deal.
I bought my 06 in Jan of 07, got hurt in Aug so I kept it for 08. Was going to ride it this summer too, I really liked it, but got a smoking deal on a 2009 YZ450. As long as you keep up on maintenance, suspension and bearings it can last a while. The feel of a new bike is pretty sweet though.

It sounds like a bunch of you have the same story I have. I have had a new bike on every even numbered year since 94. Now I'm still riding my 06 CRF450. I did find a killer deal for a complete engine when the bike had about 100 hrs on it. After I sold the old motor I ended up only spending about 300 bucks for the new one which came with the carb and all cdi. Now I'm just hoping that it holds up until I can get a new YZ250. I'm not even going to bother trading the 06. It's probably worth about $2000 trade-in if I'm lucky. Nobody wants a used 4 stroke because of the "time bomb" theory.

I was just on the market for a leftover 09 Kawi 450 and while searching I found several 09 Yamaha's in Minnesota, dealers are motivated for sure. I found the LE or whatever they call it with the white plastic and black wheels for $4800 and a buddy just picked up a blue one for $4499 otd.

Thanks for mentioning those. I have a copy of Cycle USA, listing WI , MN dealers, so I have a reference come spring.

I've had my 69 and 71 z50s since they were new. Both are apart in boxes but I had the 71 together until about 10 years ago. A 1980 YZ250 that I've had since 99. I have a Husky 510 that I've owned since 96. Modern bike is an 07 CRF250. Unless you make a living racing a new bike every year is just throwing money away.

I have a 1970 Bultaco Pursang that gets ridden on occasion. I will race it next summer after a winter time fixup starting in a couple months. Also on the to do list this winter is my 1978 CR250 and 1980 KX 250. The last "new" bike I had was a 2004 KTM 200. I sold it but wish it was still mine. I am lusting for a 2004 or so, KX125 or CR 125, I guess I'll have another newer bike one of these days. As for any more of these $6000+ showroom bikes??? That ain't happening.

I learned how to ride on a 82 rm125 and I still have it and will break it out when the young punks need a whoopin. Its the sound of a 1/2 inch pipe. I live in the woods and the people down the road still complain. 04 CRF 250 about ruined me, so I just got a new CRF 450 and broke my collar bone second time on it. I dont know how much power you guys need, but I think I found all I need.

Thats me on the 250 going over a 80' table top. I weigh 220 lbs and I hit the lip every try 3rd gear pinned. The new 450, almost over shoot the downside with a good 2nd gear goosen.
