Hopefully there will be less use the the GOAT word in Supercross Broadcasts.   I mean no disrespect, but I have always thought the term is lame.

I'm not sure there's another term to describe him.  "Dude" just doesn't cut it...unless you're James StewartWoohoo

What’s your suggestion if we can’t call him THE GOAT ?  That’s a whole lot of #1 plates.

I think GOAT probably or fairly applies to RC, at least until someone else comes and breaks all his outdoor records. But honestly I cringe when hearing the term GOAT applied in other sports. You really think that because someone is the most popular guy on sportsball team that he is Greatest of All Time at throwing or catching a sportsball? Lets get real, the term MVP is much more accurate in describing the most popular member of a given sportsball team

Why not talk about it.  It’s relevant to his knowledge as a broadcast guy.   We have the guy that did it the best reporting…..let the general public know the deal

Wholeheartedly disagree with you there. First of all you mention "team" sports. Michael jordan or whoever never won a single event themselves, only with the help of a "team." And boxing is way different than moto, they face one opponent at a time as opposed to the entire field of competition. Even so, its very subjective to say Cassius clay was the GOAT when you had mike tyson and certainly mayweather with better performances or win records. Again its just a very subjective classification in those cases, someone is called the "GOAT" by one random announcer and now half the viewers feel like going with that nickname too, because that's what they were told to do and about half of all people will just do whatever they're told or go with the narrative presented to the group

It’s hard to think anyone could win ten outdoor titles in a row.

The Zulu name for Goat. Imbuzi.....pronounced = Imboozi.

The term "Goat" was first coined for Carmichael and then other sports picked up on it.

Edit. Shit post btw Single Sac.

This term is so overplayed that it doesn’t mean anything anymore. Kids will describe things as “goated” the same way kids 10 years ago would describe things as “epic”, no matter how trivial or mundane they are.

It’s not a term that sprung from motocross, either. Maurice Greene was an Olympic sprinter who won the 100m and 4X100m gold medals in 2000. He had a prominent G.O.A.T. tattoo and was happy to explain that the acronym was greatest of all time. The term GOAT filtered through all the “sportsball” cultures before it ended up in our little corner of the motor sports world. It’s trite, it’s cheap, it’s cringe.

Y’all love Ricky enough, it seems—go invent a better moniker.

Jordan was DEFINITELY the reason the bulls won as many championships as they did.. watch his documentary, it’s a great watch.

team sports can definitely have a best player

The goat term wasn’t RC’s idea.  I don’t have a problem with it.   There is Ricky the announcer and Ricky the racer.
Ricky the racer smoked all comers for a long time. If he lined up at an outdoor National you knew you were fighting for second place because first place was spoken for any track, any time any weather conditions.  And this was around a 8 year period.  Absolute domination

Jordan was the greatest basketball player to ever play the game…Brady the greatest QB to ever play the game….they deserve the moniker just as RC does for being the greatest MX racer to race….

Ali did coin it and is the GOAT of boxing.

Brady is the GOAT of quarterbacks.

RC is without a doubt the GOAT and this discussion is beyond ridiculous.

I believe Matt Walker gets credit for that…in this sport it is fitting…maybe not as much for team athletes.

So Chad Reed, Jeremy McGrath, James Stewart and Kevin Windham are not "real competition"?

The bulk of his titles were won with only Kw as main competition.

JM was at the end of his career in SX and no competition outdoors.

Yes he has some competition from Reed (not so much) and Stewart at the end.

But during the bulk of his career only Windham posed any real threat.

This is just my take. I like Ricky and believe his records will never be matched.

Jordan, Ali, Brady are some of the best ever in their respective sports.   Their names are  synonymous with the sports they play(ed) and are also a major brand.  Essentially the name speaks for itself.  Everyone knows they are the greatest of all time without having to call them a GOAT.

When I hear an accomplished athlete being called a GOAT, I immediately think billy goats forging in the grass.  From my perspective, the GOAT reference diminishishes the individual athleate's accomplishments.

Sure you can say Carmichael is the greatest supercross champion of all time or even the greatest of all time, but as soon as you call someone a GOAT out of the gate (no pun intended) the context becomes much different.   Why can't the cobroadcaster tell the audience, sitting next to me is the all time winning super cross champion and hall of fame inductee, ricky carmichael.   Then lay a little foundation of why and what it took to get there.   IMHO it shows a little more professionalism,  class and respect for the athlete.

Surely one would not meet the President of the United States, shake his hand and say, nice to meet you Mr. POTUS.

KW is a 5 time motocross champion if RC is never born. Same amount as Eli has. Hardly a slouch.

Let’s take RC out of the picture, and add up the titles of his competitors who finished second to him and would have won had he not been there:

Seb Tortelli - 2x World Champ, 1x MX Champ

KW - 5x MX champ

Chad Reed - 2x MX Champ, 3x SX champ

James Stewart - 3x SX champ, 3x MX champ

Tim Ferry - 1x MX champ

DV - 1x SX Champ

Jeremy McGrath - 8x SX champ, 1x MX champ

seems pretty stacked to me…

By no means did I intend to imply that Kdub was a slouch.

But RC only had to beat him. There were not 4 to 5 riders for him to contend with on any given weekend.

I just think RC  3 years earlier or 3 years later would have a much different record.

RC was winning by a pretty considerable margin time and points wise.

So, there was a lack of competition.
