I once rode my bike without the air filter on.. the wash before I didn’t put a clean filter in, for some reason I put the seat back on without the air box cover (beer may have been involved) But I had no idea and the next time I rode, I remember thinking man this thing is running sooo crisp, best it ever felt. Come to wash the bike and I’m like 🤦‍♂️
The good news is it’s a 2 stroke and I was on a private track riding alone so there wasn’t dust or anything..

Not exactly before riding, but one I was spinning my wheel to lube my chain and wondered to myself how hard it would be to stop the wheel using my fingers on the brake disc. I squeezed it, and even though the wheel was hardly spinning at all, the momentum carried my thumb and forefinger right into the caliper with enough force that I thought I broke bones.

After mounting a new chain on my 1987 CR80 I got up to get the pliers i use to install the master link clip and got distracted, ride the bike up the street and the chain came apart wrapping the counter shaft sprockets twice!!!

35 years later I still use the same pliers to install my master link and checking my master link is on my pre ride checklist!

I did this cleaning my bike. Rag caught the sprocket and took my printer finger with it

Fixed a flat between practice forgot to pump up the rear brake. Get up to track hit this lil jump and went to tap the rear brake in the corner. Shit no brake. Grabbed too much front. Endo over onto my right shoulder as I get pile driven by the bike into the ground. Thankfully it was only the 125.

Drank a lot of sun tea after practice and just before my first moto of the day. I was dying, I couldn't wait for that moto to be over, I had to pee so bad my teeth were floating .Went straight from the finish to the porta can.

I changed a rear tire, one of the spoons flew somewhere and I could not find it. Went riding, got a flat, fixed tire and the spoon had been in the tire. What a goof.

Omg I have done the exact same thing, spent forever trying to find the tyre iron.. it was somehow inside the tyre, didn’t realise at the time 🤦‍♂️

Rejected my 87 Honda CR 500 for higher altitude trail riding. Half way into ride the bike started to bog real bad when giving it 3/4 to full throttle, but ran ok idle and 1/2 throttle. Made it back off the mountain, got home and pulled the carb. Someone didn’t tighten the main jet and it was floating around in the float bike, IDIOT.

I have, on several occasions, installed a directional front tire backwards. I get all the way to the point where the wheel is installed on the bike, and then realize that the arrow on the sidewall is pointing the wrong way. It's one of those mistakes that you should learn from after the first time, but I continue to f*ck it up. It's infuriating every time. Installing tires sucks. Installing the same tire twice sucks even more.

Another mistake I can't seem to learn from is drinking too much on Saturday night, only to ride hungover on Sunday morning. I guess the old saying "Ya live, ya learn" doesn't always apply Grinning

Two dumb things I did were I raced without fork oil after picking up bike from shop and also once spent race in porta jon after eating funions and sprite on the way to the track. Both were painful.

I sprayed Armor All on the seat cover of my XR80. I learned my lesson and never did it again.

Younger years when responsibilities were low and living for the moment was high. My friends and I would get off work bust it home to load up and get a couple hours of desert riding before getting dark.

One particular day we were running a behind schedule and rushing a little more than usual. Rolled the bike up to the back of the truck and realized we forgot to grab the ramp. No problem, we'll just lift it in for now strap it and get the ramp before we leave. I was on the front wheel caliper side looking to make sure the gear bag was out of the way, tie-downs in place...ect.

I'm still a little hazy on how exactly it happened but had a grip on the lower fork leg instead of the bottom. My thumb was wrapped over the top and positioned in line with the caliper. We lifted and about got the wheel on the gate when I felt this pinch on my thumb, not painful but pinned pretty good. Got the wheel on the gate, pulled my hand away looked at my thumb and went, "ugh."

Somehow my thumb got pinched between the fork and caliper in such a way that my thumbnail blew out from the base of my cuticle and was just hanging on by a little cuticle at either side of the tip. I'm astonished and just waiting for the first wave of pain. But nothing, there wasn't any pain. Went in the house and ran it under the faucet for a bit, taped it up and still went riding.

Grabbed goggles, saw they were dirty. Cleaned them with carb cleaner. Saw cracked lens, thought 'good thing I cleaned it I didn't know it was cracked'. Grabbed another set not quite as dirty, did the same thing and realized it was the carb cleaner ruining the lenses. Stopped there and fortunately still had a goggle left.

Cleaning my bike before we did the amateur Supercross in Indy (1994), I used WD-40 on the plastic and fork legs to make everything shiny. (This was before SC-1). My buddy and I were the first (2) guys they let out in practice. We go hauling down the start straight and into the first turn. Apparently, I had gotten WD-40 on the front brake rotor so when I went to slow down, I blew right through the corner and exploded a hay bale. (No such thing as tuff blocks back then) I didn't wad up, but at that point it didn't really matter!

On my 21 450sx, which was my 31st dirt bike, I was distracted and forgot to install my master link clip. I noticed when the chain came off at around 80kms. Thank Christ it didn’t ruin the cases, but I did need a new clutch slave.
