whos the fittest rider?

Eli hands down, him and his dad have mastered that slow burn peak through out the season. John Tomac has been a massive part in how Eli's career has been managed to avoid burn out. Look what Aldon Baker does to guys, nearly every single champion he helped burnt out.

How has Mike Brown not been mentioned
It is pretty crazy. Especially at his age and still solidly maintaining that level, incredible.

I don't reckon there's too much between Chase and Eli but I don't know shit and personally drink too much coca cola and don't train enough.

I'll agree to disagree. Outside of Eli, J Mart, and Anderson. Who are all factory guys, who else has done it without a coach of some...

I'm not familiar with Anderson program.
But tomac and jmart have had coaches most if not all their career.
Just coz elis trainer is his father doesn't exclude him from being 1 of the best trainers in the game.

Eli and Chase pretty much proved their superior fitness.
Jett definitely puts in the work as well.

Time gaps at the end of motos says it all.

Just go watch Pala moto 2. Close to 100 degrees at the end of a long season. Eli all day.

Tomac seems to be the fittest, but Ferrandis seems incredibly fit. He doesn't slow down at all throughout the moto.

I'd guess there's a good chance Barcia is quite fit too the way he rides...

And also Deano is a bit of a unit, looks like he puts in a lot of work off the bike.

People are sleeping on Ferrandis. He was a machine last year, nobody was fitter than him in a MX context.

On a slight tangent, talking about Sexton and Ferrandis, for a lot of normal dudes it takes it out of you having a crash, even when it doesn't hurt at all, or is that just me? Just the "oh shit" moment and picking the bike up (more so if it's awkward or the mud has packed up or something). Gotta be pretty fit across the board to get your heart rate back in check and go straight back to pushing the same pace (I imagine), even aside from the mental strength it takes to get your head back in the game that fast.

Love to see it with how soft or just batshit crazy the rest of the world seems to be now. I know most sports have some tough guys and everyone is biased to think their sport is the one, but motocross really does.

Elephant in the room…. Past or present, don’t discount PED’s. I know championship winning programs that were driven by PED’s.
You’ll never get an accurate measurement of overall fitness in MX.

Herlings used to post his fastest laps at the end of the races on beat up SAND TRACKS. With the intensity and aggression he rides with, that’s just some freakish shit..

Back in the day? Hannah. They would have foot races for the riders and Hannah would win all of them.

Today? Tomac and Chase.

How do their arms take it? I can see how they can push for the amount of time but I can't see how these dudes can hang on to their bikes anymore lol. Probably a personal issue but that's what blows me away.

Do any riders have running programs? It seems like cycling dominates but I do not see alot of running in mx.

Stanton, the man was an animal.

He had no style, but was as fast as they get.

Even in his heyday, Bradshaw couldn't go as fast as Stanton

Tomac for sure. Then probably all the Honda guys minus Ken. But of all time I would say RC after he got off the Dairy Queen and McDonald's program and started training with Aldon. Dungey, RV, and J Mart. Honorable mention to Baggett and LaRocco. Those 2 always put their best laps in late in the motos.
Disagree RC was super fit, but not the fittest ever, I think difference being he was fitter than his rivals for a fair few years while they all caught up.

Its Tomac. He's the guy 99% of the time pulling the fastest laps of the race at the 2 lap board.

Jeremy martin did a pro mountain bike race recently. Heart rate avg 190 for over 2 hrs. Ive done my fair share and the tough ones always have you asking why did i sign up and pay for this? lol.
Theres gotta be some other riders training hardcore and putting up some results.

A very well known trainer who I know pretty well told me that Jeremy Martin is the best natural athlete of all the riders, closely followed by Eli. He said he is an absolute freak when it comes to cardio, strength, and his willingness to suffer.

Both hit the genetic lottery.

Couple of notes I remember from Eli during this years post race interviews
Southwick: His legs were toast; maybe less toast than anyone else but it was clear that he was suffering. Big gaps as the moto progressed.
Pala2: with the heat was laying back and not giving it 100% when he didn't need to, pushed when he had to, managing the races.

Some tracks and conditions take more endurance than skill, at least at the top edge of performance that the top 5 guys ride at. Southwick seems the most demanding on the AMA circuit.

I wonder if be raised in the countryside eating helk, fresh eggs, salmons and listening country make you tougher than living city, eat McDonald and listening rap. Could be wrong.

The Martin brothers have to be up there. I can't think of any rider other than maybe Tomac that could finish in the top third of a pro XC MTB race

Nobody's mentioned Jeff Ward. He was well known for his conditioning.

During his heyday, he was tested at this Institute of something or rather (can't recall the actual name of the place), that tested athletes from all sports to see just what kind of shape they were actually in. Wardy was deemed as one of the most physically fit athletes of any sport that had ever been tested there.

Hannah has already been mentioned, that dude was a hell of an athlete and was in incredible shape.

I think it’s funny how most of you assume the top two guys are the fittest…they are both fit, but they are just faster….

There are probably 10-15 at about the exact same level of ‘fit’ that still can’t win…

Mike Brown and Mike LaRocco defined fittest for their time but there was always someone else winning more often

Talking about how fit the riders are during program features or by the announcers is lame. These guys are professional athletes, they should be fit, they should train hard! You don't hear announcers in other sports hype up how fit the guys on the field are.
