Anyone else think the cash cow needs to lose its national championship status. Its literally one race and we crown kids and call them champs. Why dont we actually take the time and create a series that grooms these kids to show them what it really takes. It wouldn't be hard to combine all the top amateur races to be a series and make lorettas the opening round. A and B guys race 30 plus 2 motos like the pros to give them a taste of the pros. Ill never understand why this sport sets these kids up for failure rather than sucess.

I think it should be a series as well. At least three rounds.

A series could be cool, but Loretta's is truly a great format. No other race requires and Area, then a Regional, and then three long motos in a week long event. I am not sure why you are referring to it as a cash cow......nobody is required to go and is it wrong a promoter actually makes money?

Problem with a series is the money for those to travel and attend each race of the series. Loretta’s itself is already expensive enough and you only have to travel to one place.

Something along the lines of following the nationals would be cool, but again that’s a lot more expensive for the families.

I think it’s a good thing! It’s one race series a year and if you want to get serious about the racing…..this is a great place to go.

Racing isn't a poor man's sport, if you want to play you have got to pay its that simple. Cool

There's a whole host of things wrong with Loretta's but I think it's deserving of the National Championship moniker. However, I think they do need to get rid of the amateur that preceeds National Championship.

Have you ever went through an area and regional to make it to LL? Forget what you finish at the actual race, just making it through is a huge accomplishment. To be the national champ at LL you have to race three events. That’s basically a mini series.

Also, there are other nationals. Spring national, Mini Os, etc. those plus everything LL takes is a lot of racing. Even more when most of those races are 4-5 day events that take massive prep. Just racing the big Ammy nats Will have you on the road 10 weeks a year at minimum. That’s a lot for a family who isn’t getting paid.

And that’s how we continue to kill this sport. It’s getting so expensive with bikes, parts and the serious racing side of it that this sport is going to start going away. When only the well off can afford it, bye bye motocross.

It's LITERALLY NOT one race and a title. It's three 15 minute moto's in a week and as 8ten said above, you have to make it through an area and a regional to qualify in.
Now I've had some friends get in as alternates that probably shouldn't have been there, but the people winning titles deserve them and get rewarded to do so.
I'll be down there again watching this year.
I keep an eye on the group right behind the top 3-4 guys.

Not everyone is as poor as you think and all motorsports are expensive to be involved with and its never going to change. It was the least expensive motorsport at one time but evolved from basic grass roots to High tech just like everything else.

I'm probably just going to do off-road races with my two babies. Safer, more ride time, and cheaper. Definitely want to try for the peewee class once at Loretta's with them though.

You new?

$ is what this is about these days. Plain and simple.

Not saying it doesn't take a stupid amount of dedication to get there at any level though. Takes a stupid amount of cash to make happen for the average Joe tho.. oh wait ... This ain't for the average Joe...

Nothing amateur about it. Even the classes they try to save for amateur racers have ex pros in it, or factory supported kids.

I’m not saying they are, but they will start doing other things with their money instead if we keep going the way we are headed. That money will be put to places that are more beneficial for the person or family. You’ll always have your diehards that will put themselves $500k in the hole do to this stuff, but the majority of others will call it quits instead. We are a niche sport and nothing we are doing now is doing anything to bring new people into the sport.

Loretta's is not killing the sport, nor are any other huge races. The "grassroots" are racing at chicken licks raceway on 10 year old bikes which is great. It's not a requirement to go to largest event of the year for the top of each class nationally. Yes, if you want to compete at that level, it won't be inexpensive.

The sport has always been expensive and after the four strokes arrived, it became even more expensive. The high cost is the nature of the beast. Always has been, always will be so we've already arrived "when only the well off can afford it" point a long time ago IMO.

Mini Os, make ponca city great again, Loretta’s…it’s clear who the fastest kids are by the end of all this…

The cost though…a series would take a lot of fast blue collars right out of the game

Knowing you as I do…
Knowing that you’re an addict of actual “Motocross”…
Knowing that you live, love and fight for REAL privateers and “local amateur racing” in your professional AND personal life…

I think your post and those that you refer to should stand as a statement of fact as to what the ENTIRE PROCESS & indeed “The Series of Races” that one goes thru to be an LL’s competitor.

The likes of Lukaitis and some others that have done sooooo much for so many…just to help them “try” to get to Loretta’s is further proof of a system that works & the people that support it.

Been there, done that…all they way back to the very 1st LL’s…

Loretta's itself seems like an awesome event, the whole make or break your career there seems like the shitty part.

Ive qualified twice for lls. Never went because i wasnt going to make a living racing mx. Definitely not butthurt over it. Im just making an opinion from things i see and hear. Spending 10k plus to go race something that has zero meaning in the grand scheme of things. How many LL champs have been successful vs not? How many amateurs come from LL and crush it in the pros now? How much has teams blown on these kids to only have them not make it in the pros? My point was why not make it so that the future pros have a better chance sucess with more structure. Because 3 fifteen minute motos over a week Definitely doesnt equal two 30 plus 2 motos an hour apart from each other.

I find it ironic we bitch the pros have to pay to race but then say its ok that same promotion company, mx sports, makes thousands of dollars for this one week amateur event...

Is Lorettas the best track? No
Is it arguably too small for anything over a 125? Yea

But.

Somewhere down the line 30+ years ago it was decided that Lorettas was “the masters” of motocross. Everyone has the same 3 motos to make a name for themselves…

The pressure and pride associated with preforming well at Lorettas is what makes that ranch so magical, the track is secondary to what the track represents

A 125 pro-am class would be pretty sweet. Have an East/West split.

West
Pala
Hangtown
Thunder Valley
Washougal

East
Budds Creek
High Point
Southwick
Unadilla

Shootout at Lorettas.

I'm in on that idea and the same thing at Supercross too.
But Futures filled a void this year and the combine at Red Bud was amazing.

To add to it, most of these amateurs are going to nationals across the country already. If anything make a series for the few classes that make sense. No need to make a series for 40+ C class
