He also went through his career without many injuries and very little races missed because of injuries.
RV has more national/sx titles than EVERYONE bar RC, and he beat Dungey to each except the first 250 nat title where Dungey hadn't gone pro yet. Each time they finished, RV finished in front.
Pointing to RD's titles/wins as a reason to put him ahead of RV is like pointing to Chad/James' 450 career – 3 450 titles and similar wins – but you wouldn't equivocate their career. James beat Chad, no one is going to say James wasn't better.
Very interesting.
And inversely you're arguing the titles Dungey won when RV wasn't there somehow matter more – but their Vs record strongly suggests RV would come out on top. RV has more titles, and Dungey never beat RV to a title they finished.
It's really that simple and i'd bet Dungey would tell you RV was always a bit better. In fact i'm almost certain he has already on Pulp.
Yes I know getting hurt is part of the game, and the risk was there for Dungey too.
I think head to head on any given day, most would put their money on Villo. In my opinion that makes what Dungey did at Pala even MORE impressive.
With this current group of title contenders, a dude who can get top fives, and better, EVERY SINGLE MOTO, has a legitimate shot at the title. That is the definition of Dungey.
I'm not really a fan boy of him or Roczen, but think about this....when Kenny has been ON outdoors, nobody has been able to touch him.
Take Chase out of the equation on Saturday and it's another classic Roczen first round DOMINATION and nobody is surprised. Chase beat THAT Roczen. Straight up. And demolished everyone else.
If you remove Villopoto from Dungeys career, he has how many more titles?
That's the ultimate "what if" right?
They are both legends. They both had incredible careers and stacked titles. Head to head Villopoto won every time. That's all I'm saying. It IS debatable who had the "better career."
Pit Row
You can't simply say they are both legends but when they raced head to head (and finished) RV always took the title.
That's why the "better career" thing is subjective. The head to head evaluation isn't.
2010 He was very much in the Championship hunt with Dungey. St louis crash took him out of remainder of SX and MX.
2012 crash in seattle took him out of the Motocross series that he was looking to defend his title.
You can't tell me we can't think about what if he wouldn't have crashed? It could have possibly been some of the most domination we have ever seen had it not been for those 2 crashes.
I think they are both legends, but head to head I'll take RV every time.
Those same two legends when they see each other...
Suzuki basically folded up their whole program and were reusing parts that year. RV had the comfort of riding the same team/bike his whole 450 career. And Kawi were always pumping money and progressing the bike. Dungey went on to an unproven team and bike.
And as for Aldon being his trainer for RV's whole 450 career it was convenient timing for RV to retire before all the PED testing started to be implemented.
