So I just recently got back into MX after a 30 year layoff. I recently bought a 450 with a Guts ribbed gripper seat. I Rode yesterday at a local track, and it may just be my 60 year old ass, but after 30 minutes of riding, I felt like my seat was a cheese grater...my ass was so sore.

my question: is there something people are wearing now under their riding pants that help with this? I wear padded bicycle shorts under my gear on my adventure bikes, but I don't think that would work well for MX...

Fly Racing Barricade shorts. Also you can try Runner's Lube but I don't like it for moto, works well for MTB.

And stand up more. Wink

Is the Guts seat new, or did it come on the bike? If the seat is many years old, maybe the foam gets stiffer over time?

Seat Concepts makes a "Comfort XL" seat that is a little bit wider in the back. It is a lot more comfy than my stock seat. It looks a little bit funny, but it's probably worth it to us old guys.

I wear some padded underwear similar to what bicycle riders use.
Once you get to be 60 it’s not really a big deal if bulky underwear take a half second off your lap time.

If you get “chapped” down below there is a great powder called “monkey butt”

And like others said ride more. Not always a option when I you get to be our age. My ass gets sore on my Harley rides and I’m riding around on a sofa cushion. Hell getting old but it beats the alternative

It is a new seat. It doesn't seem to be the hardness or softness of the seat, it is the gripper and ribs are pretty rough.

Yeah...I have used Monkey Butt on my long distance, off-road adventure rides. Works good. I guess at our age, with padded shorts, people will just think I am wearing diapers Laughing

Those ribbed covers will tear you up! Even if you ride a lot on a seat with a regular cover, the ribbed covers will hurt you. My suggestion, if you want some traction to hold you in place, get a seat with a gripper section on top with smooth sides. Its plenty for us 60 year olds. And yes - ride more!

If Monkey Butt powder doesn’t handle it, bring in the heavy artillery.

I've suffered from the same issue so I feel your pain. Padded shorts and body glide or the previously mentioned bag balm has worked wonders for me.

The new deal with the seats is to make them grippy as hell. Wear bicycle shorts (tight shorts that have padding in the ass).....all the brands have their version. The EVS Tug shorts are good enough.

Depends on the bike but it might make sense to go back to the stock seat.

Get a smoother seat cover and ride more. I don't love the ribs, either.

+1 for the bike shorts. I use regular baby powder as well. Works the same as Monkey Butt to help with chafing. As stated already, more standing helps me.

This isn’t preventative and seems kinda gross but it works. Chafing comes from wet skin rubbing just like diaper rash. So, diaper rash cream after you chafe works amazing.

Welcome back to moto!!

When my guts seat cover was new I took a piece of fine sand paper and took tops off of the little cheese grater bumps.

I really like the astars undershorts as they have the bicycle chamois (the pad in the ass) but also have thigh and hip padding but are still really slim and fit under your pants just fine. I ride hare scrambles and sit far too much and they make a huge difference.

Much like your hands you need to get the Gluteus Maximus hardened back up

I personally hate ribbed seat covers mostly for that reason.

Need to be standing up more. My MTB was giving me severe monkey butt (even with padded shorts) and my solution was stop sitting down so damn much. Made me ride standing up and as a result, chaffing went away. the balms and shorts help, but first thing I would say to do is to stand more.

I wear these Alpinestars riding shorts. They have hard plastic on the sides & for the tailbone area. Life saver, especially for someone who injured their tailbone on a bike 10+ years ago. Find some padded shorts that you like

Exactly. You don’t need to go out and buy anything at this stage. Just ride more.

Not doing it for a long time then jumping straight back into it will lead to weird soreness.

If your ass is sore you’re doing it wrong.

Bag balm changed there labeling . It had a pic of a cows udder and direction for applications for injuries or sunburn to a cows teats. This stuff heals flesh wounds so fast it’s crazy. But padded shorts no Thx it makes ya look like you hv a diaper on. Better off having a raw upper hinder.
