Will Gas Prices Change Your Moto Plans?

Gas prices are obviously high and given what's going on with oil and gas futures this week on the back of Ukraine, they are heading higher (possibly significantly higher in the coming days and weeks). Just curious if this has anyone re-thinking their moto plans this year? Less travel which means attending fewer races, less practice, etc? The moto scene has been really strong for a couple of years now. Could gas prices start to reverse this?

Yup I literally was just thinking about this 5 min ago. After 10 years of owning it I won't be using my toy hauler any longer and it seems there aren't any 2 day race weekends in my area these days.

Yep already has when races are stacked up weekends in a row we have to cut some out. We are just finishing up a winter series we were running then we won't be racing as much until they come down. Just stay close and practice.

You should try living in the uk if you think your prices in the us are steep!
My local is £1.60 per litre which works out close to $10 per gallon and thats a relatively cheap price in the uk currently compared to some areas that are close to £1.90 per litre.

I thought this same question this morning as I passed the gas station. Price jumped up again since yesterday. $3.64 locally. Definetely running pump gas and not race fuel. I drive a 4 dr commuter to and from work to save $$. Probably keep riding trips within 2hr drive.

Food for thought: My Transit when loaded CAN get 18-20mpg if I chill out and take it easy...

But, I usually get 15-16 when loaded...which is all based on my right foot! Grinning

Luckily my local track is 25 minutes away. We usually throw a couple of bikes in a buddies trailer and one in the bed and ride together to the further tracks. Everybody pitches in a bit for fuel so no big deal for me really

Is it not true though? I don’t think fuel prices are gonna stop many from getting out and riding. (At this point) just like the moto dads that roll up in their 125k motorhome and complain about paying an extra ten dollars for power/water hook ups to camp

I'm much better off now than I was back in 2008 when gas prices hit $4+ per gallon. I still had a waverunner and dirt bike then, and my family vehicle gets the same mileage as my Ranger did then so I'm not seeing any change in plans. Plus my son's bike doesn't even take gas! If fuel prices started affecting my family we would definitely dump the $50,000 expedition and buy another Jetta...

Nope... I drive 106 miles per day to work and back... I am 58 years old. I am still riding while I am physically able. This will NOT change my plans to ride at least (3) weekends per month.

If your track is 75 miles away and your truck gets 15mpg, then you will use 10 gallons of gas (round trip) to go ride.

At $4/gallon, that's $40.
At $5/gallon, that's $50.
At $7/gallon, that's $70.

So if gas went crazy up to $7/gallon, you are talking about $30 extra compared to the price of gas (about $4 in So Cal) a year ago.

Doesn't seem substantial when you put it that way.

But...if the price of gas goes to $7/gallon that is going to greatly affect the cost of all of our every day goods, life in general will be considerably more expensive. This is going to lead to less disposable income for most folks = less riding.

Yeah, I think people see high prices at the pump without doing the math of what the real magnitude of the difference is. It's usually not as bad as it seems.

I average driving about 15,000 miles per year in my truck at 15mpg. So that's 1,000 gallons/year.

So my annual gas cost at various pump prices:

$3/gallon = $3,000 = $250/mo
$4/gallon = $4,000 = $333
$5/gallon = $5,000 = $416

Yeah, I prefer the lower prices. But the price I'm paying now is only about $166 more per month than I was paying two years ago when gas was really cheap during early days of COVID.

I just said this yesterday. I had plans to ride the NEPG series and pull a Momentum Toy Hauler with an F350 DRW. If fuel gets to $5/gal, I'll stay home and/or ride locally.

Times are not tough if you have a motocross bike or side x side, boat etc etc in the garage. Gas might get more expensive but if you can afford to ride then it shouldn't be a deal breaker just a minor inconvenience and with the amount of jobs out there you could always get a part time gig to help finance your riding. You know things are bad when the garages are empty and no toys, then its time to bitch. Cool
