Yeah. I was popping off but there was some thought behind it.

Seriously didn’t think he’d jive with the new bike so quickly.

Let’s see what happens. Great SX season so far.

I still think he will crush the outdoors.

I think the biggest indicator of how many wins Eli gets this year is this next race.

If he can win back-to-back races that will be telling as he always did that in his good years.

Last year he could not pull it off.
I'd pick him for the win if it were a normal race, but its a gang bang race which means 3 starts. Eli still isn't starting great as a whole and getting 3 good starts in one night seems tough. He likes the AZ dirt and has typically done really well here in AZ. I just don't like his chances when it comes to getting 3 good starts in the gang bang race structures especially with less laps to make up for poor starts, even worse for DF14.

I like Ando this weekend for the overall with Kenny and Malcolm in my top 3 on fantasy.

Tomac has been excellent at the triple crown races. His average overall finish is 2nd. He's won 4 out of the 8 triple crowns that have been held. His worst finish is 4th.

These are 3 starts in a long start straight which should help bad starters but the first race and most of the second would be sprints so you can only afford one bad start.

Looking at the number of podiums is quite interesting too

155 = Jeremy Mcgrath (9 seasons)
133 = Chad Reed (17 seasons)
100 = Ryan Dungey (8 seasons)
87 = Ricky Carmichael (7 seasons)
75 = Eli Tomac (8 seasons)
75 = James Stewart (11 seasons)
63 = Ryan Villopoto (6 seasons)
58 = Ken Roczen (8 seasons)
44 = Marvin Musquin (6 seasons)
42 = Cooper Webb (5 seasons)

I think he passes Chad and RV by the end of the season.....maybe RC too. If he decides to race again next year he passes all 3 imo.

Why no Reed on that list?
Edit: I see you put him in now 👍

I think it depends on how Sexton does, I think Chase gets better starts generally and can match Eli's speed. If Chase gets good starts this year and stays upright it could really limit Eli's wins.

I think he will get 40, more or less depends on how well Chase and Eli start.

That's wild. McGrath has been racing a little longer than Tomac. Tomac has been pretty awesome. Yet McGrath made the podium almost twice as often - for 9 years!

I don't remember how much of McGrath I really watched. I knew that he was doing a lot of winning, and would see results in the magazines (weeks after the races), and I would catch some races on ESPN2, but it seems like I never knew when they would be on TV, if at all. So I was "around' for McGrath, but definitely didn't follow the sport like I do now.

BTW, Carmichael raced more than 7 seasons in the "450" class.

1999-2007 is 9 seasons. He missed all of 2004 SX and half of 2007 SX. So really he raced 8 seasons.

Also, McGrath raced more than 9.

So what are you counting as a "season"?

It’s much easier to follow now. During MC’s prime we were still using VCR’s on a timer to record the races and they were quite often moved around on ESPN2.

I feel so lucky with the coverage we have today… AMA and MXGP.

I say Tomac passes RV in 2022, and Reed in 2023. It might take another year to catch Carmichael.

The way he has been riding I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even get one. He probably will, but it's not looking to promising.

If roczen didn't have the arm injury in 2017, I wonder how many less wins tomac would have. 17,18,19 he won alot but roczen wasn't back to normal then.

If Weimer didn't cross jump Eli causing him injury in his rookie season, how many races could Eli have won? If Eli didn't destroy both of his shoulders, how many races could he have won? If's and but's. Every rider deals with them which is why there is no point in debating these points. You can only race who shows up in whatever condition they show up in.

Come to think about it and I'd not be surprised to see him pass Chad this year and even match or pass Stu's 50 wins before retiring.

It’s interesting to go back and read this whole thread, a lot of people counting Eli out, but he looks amazing at the moment!

The thing about Eli is, I wouldn't be surprised if he went on a tear and won everything from here on out. I also wouldn't be surprised if he floundered around in 7th.

It seems like he has the formula figured out for now, let's hope he keeps the intensity up and wins some more.

It is amazing he is doing so well, so fast.

His father talked in the past about how it took Eli a long time to get used to the Kawi.

It's already been talked about by others, but we talk as if Eli has been racing 450 SX for 8 full years, when he hasn't. The beginning of his 450 career was riddled with injuries and bad luck. In 2014 and 2015 he wasn't able to compile a full season, and 2016 he was still recovering from two broken shoulders while being on a new bike and team. He didn't really "settle down" and get his real 450 campaign going until 2017, and from 2017-2021 is where almost all of his SX wins came. So looking at that 5 season stretch, he won a TON of races (especially if you take out 2021). The fact that from 2017-2020 he only won a single title just shows how inconsistent he was. He was averaging around 7 wins a season, which typically guarantees a championship.

Tomac raced all 17 SX rounds in 2015.

Tomac has only missed one SX race from the start of 2015 until now. That was when he missed Houston in 2018.

Looks like win #45 will have to wait for 2023.
