Is it cheesy to run numbers, if you don't race?

"Number Plate", hence put a number on that thing. Naked looks too incomplete IMO.

No need for numbers around here - Every local race series I know of requires transponders on the bikes now.

No, do what you want

I run my fav number which happens to be my girls birthday. I don't race anymore and don't have plans to but It does help ID a rider.

I actually always thought it looked weird if someone didn't have numbers on their bike. Even if you don't race, just put on your favorite (or lucky) number. And like it's been said....wtf cares what other people think about how you or your bike looks.

I don't race and always have #86 on my bikes.
I have this number on my bike because I love my Toyota 86.

No but there are a few unwritten rules to follow. Your numbers must match on each number plate. Roman numerals are pretentious unless you’re the Pope. Four digit numbers are one too many.

Just leave the AMA PRO RACING decals in the bag with the generic sponsor decals and roost on!

Just put a bunch of moto products stickers that you have laying around on those number plates instead, it'll prove your in it to win it

I'd feel cheesy personally unless it was a vintage bike deal, but we're in the to enjoy it and who's to say. Just have fun on bikes. It does seem a little weird when people pitch a full sized bike for sale as never raced and there are numbers stuck on it.

You have three number plates. Area code on the exhaust side continue around the bike 👌

To the op, do whatever you like man, I've wasted SO much time, energy and opportunity over the years worrying about what people think, do whatever floats your boat

To paraphrase my essay, "Of Numbers and Speed," there is a list of numbers you should not run. You guys have already called out some of the ones I specified in the "official document," but here's a quick list of no-nos:

-666, Satan's number
-187, Police code for murder
-420, Police code for intoxication
-911, Emergency services and Porsche automobiles
-151, Bacardi Rum
- Generally any number which calls out an urban legend or myth.
-Your Birthdate, although who would know? (Except your friends, who should hassle you relentlessly for this minor violation.)

Here's a quick quote from my essay. Learn it. Know it. Live it. Grinning :

Numbers that mean something to you are awesome. However, if they are a code for something that is universally accepted, that makes them slow. This is where rule #4 comes in. 911 should be fast, claiming dominion over emergency services and Porsche automobiles, but unfortunately, it is not. 357 should be fast, but its connection with a caliber of bullet makes it cheesy and slow (even though bullets are fast!) Likewise, you get slow numbers from codes such as 151, 187, 420, 666 (a kind of liquor, police codes, and Satan’s numeral representation,) and any number that represents an area code you live in (or 951 even if you don’t live in Temecula.)
You really hurt 13 y/o mes feelings

Numbers on MX bike are just a government conspiracy to keep track of us, they let us think numbers are for racing, that's what they want us to think but its really a way for them to put us on the grid. Cool Wink

Numbers aren’t cheesy. It gets cheesy to me when dudes run the ama or lucas oil pro banner above there numbers. Team graphics never seemed cool to me either. But that’s just me, run whatever you want as long as you like it.

My next bike will be either 187 or a big PLUMP MX logo. 187 was my first earned BMX number which was 7th in my class in my region

Run them. Bikes look incomplete without them IMO. and you never know when a buddy might talk you into a race at the last minute, then you're good to go.

I had them put on last time, I thought it was funny. The AMA rules state if you race a PRO AMA event you have to run that sticker somewhere. What if I turn pro, bro? (I'm a slow C guy, it aint happenin' lmao)

Welp, I decided to run numbers to go with a theme that is close to me. I purchased from DecalWorks...as I used them when I used to race (desert). The decals will be mounted to new Polisport plastics. I have a 2020 450WE so I used the color scheme and added a couple things.

Sorry man, I don't make the rules; I just enforce 'em. Cool Laughing

I have a great story about numbers: Many years ago, before we were married, my wife worked at a car dealership. There was a guy from my town who always loaded his spotless YZ250 into his truck and drove around, presumably to look cool. I had never met the guy, but I know he did not race, because he had no numbers on his bike. Could have been fast, maybe didn't even know how to start it. Whatever. Anyway, one day he strolls into my wife's work, buys a few parts for his truck, and then saunters over to the cashier's stand to pay. He starts chatting my girl up and invites her on a date. In the biggest, baddest shoot-down I've ever even heard about, she says, "No, sorry; you don't even have any numbers on your bike, and I don't date SPODES!!"

Shocked
Dude's junk must have shrunk to less than an inch.

No spectators? Nobody watches the actual race with their eyes? Everyone just peers at a scoring device?

I'm going with no numbers, no graphics and scratched plastic.
