Drop your worst round

Edited Date/Time 1/20/2022 8:28am
I keep hearing this brought up. It was talked about on Pulp this week too. I looked at the points results back to 2009 and the only season it would affect the top 3 is 2017. Eli Tomac would’ve taken the title and Dungey would be second. Every other year nothing would change.

They talked about it for this year because of Covid, but if every top guy misses a race, they all drop 0 points so how does that change anything?

Edit: for all the downvoters I’m NOT suggesting we do this. I’m saying it doesn’t make any difference. And can only hurt the consistent guys

Nope. Think how confusing it would be going into the last round. This guy would have to get better than 10th to drop his worst round and improve his score, the other guy would have to get better than 6th to improve his score. Then on top of that all the regular scenarios. It would be a mess!

Part of being a champion is making through the whole year.

Exactly! Imagine one guy has a great year, never off the podium and has to drop a race

I’m not suggesting we do this. Exact opposite. I’m saying it wouldn’t make a difference so no point in doing it. It can’t positively affect the series

No because it penalizes the riders who are consistent. Whether it's crashes, mechanicals, lappers, mud, or just plain bad luck, making through all the rounds and coming out on top is what makes the title so special.

I am not a fan of the drop round idea. But with the Covid rules, everyone should be tested every race, or no one should be tested at all, too much room for tomfoolery.

Formula 1 up to 1990 had a point system that didn’t count all the races.

In some seasons, not all race results would be counted towards the World Championship. Only a certain number of a driver's best results would count. In 1988 this caused a very unusual result. Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna were the drivers for McLaren. They were the best two drivers of that year. There were 16 races that year, but only the best 11 results counted towards the championship. Prost won seven races and finished seven races in second place. He scored a total of 105 points, but only 87 of them counted for the championship. Senna won eight races and finished second in three, giving him 90 points for the championship and 94 for the season. This resulted in the strange event where Prost took a record number of points, yet Senna won the champion. A new system counting all races was introduced in 1991. One additional point was also awarded to the race winner.

I can see both sides to this. I wouldn’t be opposed if they implemented it and I won’t be mad if it stays the same.

I think the WSL (World Surf League) allows competitors to drop one or two of their lowest scores of the season. I don’t know why they do this. Like suicidal said, I think it penalizes those who are consistent. On the other hand, dropping scores might encourage guys to push the limits a bit more and make for some good racing. I don’t think that’s enough reason to change it, but I can see some of the advantages.

Because the WSL events are based on subjective judging, and those stoners really screw the pooch sometimes.

Why fix what is not broken?
Whats next you can only win 2 championships in a row and then you have to sit out a season?
May be points leaders need to start from the outside gate?

Yeah think how it would be going into the last round with some drama and not know who is going to wrap up the championship if they can "salvage" a 15th...Hate to bring up the C topic but how much is it going to suck if a top rider choses not to get a fake vax card and then has to miss a round, especially if that rider had the red plate? Would think the "drop" idea (I know it's too late now) would've had a perfect opportunity to be tried out this year.

Instead of dropping a round, "Starbucks this series" Drop testing like they recently did. Not too late.

my mind hurts even thinking about how you would keep up with the points standing on a week to week basis

Round 2, everyone or no one has the red plate, as they are all tied at 0 lol

I think you could implement it if you had to declare the round drop within 24 hours after a race. IE Kenny might think this was his worst round so he gets it dropped by sunday afternoon. If later in the season he DNF's or finishes worse than 13 he can't drop that round because he already used his drop. If you wait till the final round they drop an average result for you.

It'll never happen just my idea how it could maybe work. But even i don't support it.

I don't like it in amateur race series at Chicken Licks Raceway, and I wouldn't like it for the pros, either.

I'll bet the tune changes once a top 5 guy gets hit with covid.

The GPs originally ran with a form of this in the early 70s and probably 60s. As much to do with bikes breaking as anything. Today I think it is a wash; some years it would make the title chase closer, some years not. I think RV did not qualify for a round one year and still won the title.

Besides all the arguments people are (imo) rightfully making in this thread as to why it’s a bad idea, just imagine going to a race and your favorite rider crashes and bends his bars or something early in a race and rather than charge as far forward as possible to salvage points just pulled off and said “I’ll drop this race. Not worth risking injury by riding with bent bars from so far back.”

they tried something like this for making the SX main event after a rider that was a contender failed to qualify. That rule only lasted 1 year.

That would be a dumb thing for the ride to do. Maybe in a couple races he gets the Rona and has to sit out, terrible idea

I love the idea because of COVID. IMO, you don't catch the virus because of mistakes you made. JB10 had it and felt fine...but had to sit Oaktown out. Not his fault but he paid the price.

In regards to keeping up with the points, etc... it's not hard. BMX (and other sports) do it all year long. Wait until the week before the final round and zero out the points of the riders lowest score. Very easy.

In a non-Covid series, I can 100% agree with keeping it as is. But with this covid stuff...a rider may be penalized without ever doing anything wrong. $.02
