Nobody should consider Malcom's race as any sort of disappointment. Consider for instance his pace over the last 10 laps. Mookie was cleaned out by Marv on lap 12 of 22, which left him with 10 uninterrupted laps to finish the race. A detailed look will surprise many. I had to check the numbers twice....

https://results.amasupercross.com/xml/SX/events/S2205/S1F1RID.pdf

Average Lap Time and Std Dev over last 10 laps (Laps 13-22) of the race:

Musquin: 60.747 / .601
Stewart: 60.832 / .362
Webb: 60.853 / .562
Sexton: 61.127 / 1.024
Barcia: 61.406 / 1.155
Tomac: 61.428 / .507
Savatgy: 61.476 / .862
Roczen: 61.570 / 1.067
Plessinger: 61.572 / .503
Anderson: 62.728 / 2.309
Ferrandis: 66.050 / 7.098

What is more stunning than the sheer speed at the end of the race (fitness) is the consistency. A Std Dev of .362 is something you would expect to see in elite level kart racing, not in Supercross. That is ridiculously consistent. That means he can go faster....

This is probably why Mookie was so furious with Marv. That take out cost both of them a ton. Marv probably had the speed for P2, but he got impatient. Mookie could have been P3-P5 even with that bad start.

Big picture...did you ever think you would see Mookie be one of the fastest guys at the end of the race? While P7 is not the goal, you can bet Aldon looked at his speed at the end of the race and told him everything is just fine. All Mookie needs to do is get starts, race smart, and charge hard in the 2nd half of the race.

So you’re saying the guy who left Aldon’s was faster than Aldon’s new guy at the end of the race?

It was meant as a commentary primarily on his improved fitness. In prior years, a big knock on Malcolm was that he would literally just slow down about 2/3 of the way through a main for a few laps. The implication being that he was tired, and needed to recover.

Also check the lap chart...he crossed the line P14 on lap 15. So he came up from P14 to P7 while clocking laps that fast, and that consistent.

That lap chart actually reads that he was the 14th guy to cross the finish line after Roczen, meaning that he was 10th (there were 4 lappers between himself and Roczen) but the 10th to 7th ride, at the pace he was on, is still impressive.

This just comfirms that Malcom don’t have put in the work earlier.

The stewarts had knowlege about aldons program since James days and still Malcom have turned up over weight (for a pro athlete) each season, being fast at practice and quali and then faded like a stone in the main.

It’s good to see him finally rise to his potential, he has always had the speed so it has been frustrating to seing him lack the fitness that is way easier to find than speed.

The question shouldn’t be whether or not he has the speed to win a race. The question is can he put it all together and get it done. He hasn’t been able to yet but hopefully he can soon.

Data is nice but it can't explain why Webb and Barcia both notoriously average qualifiers end up on the podium. Until data can measure racecraft and heart it will just be data Wink

But that is just more data, Webb averages about 4 positions better than qualifying and has for a while.

I'm looking forward each race to see how Mook goes this year with the solid team bike program and contract. Don't think anybody expects a title 1st race win would be epic and that big cheese grin on podium would be massive!

I haven't seen std dev since I was racing RC and tracked all my practice/race laps! Nice Smile Did you throw out fastest/slowest lap? Curious. The two biggest things I am excited for 2022 SX? Mookie with Aldon and new bike, and Eli on the blue bike. Stay healthy boys, going to be a good season!

Some people just need structure..... It is not a good thing or a bad thing...it just is. What I liked about this summer was that most of the photos Mookie posted were of him fishing... Which was probably BS...because he was low- key putting in the work and keeping a low profile.

There was nothing in the analysis about Qualifying vs Race Pace, so not sure why you bring that up. Racers get tired at the end of a race. When you get tired, you get inconsistent...so looking at this sort of info gives you a good idea who is fit, fast....

Right now it looks like Webb, Marv and Mookie are set for good seasons. We knew to expect that from Webb... Barcia? If he does not get a start, he will inevitably end up in some sort of mayhem, which over the long run is why he will never win a title.
