Back in the 80s the classes were distinct, but generally the 500cc class was the premier title.
But I would NOT call Mark Barnett, Ward or O'Mara "lites" champions on 125cc.
Now it has been MX2 - 250 4T or what would have been 125 2T, with an age limit. So the premier class is MXGP - the remaining "big bore" class.
In the US while the AMA 250 championship remains a full national championship, the presence of the regional 250 SX (was "lites") class feels like it detracts from the standing of the outdoor 250 MX championship. Few have ambitions to stay in 250 class other than necessity.
How could anyone refute what he said?

As for his opinion- it sounds to me as he’s referring to GPs only, not AMA, so yeah Herling’s 2 titles don’t quite stack up against greats like Cairoli and Everts, but as the man said “yet”!
I know he got a couple free points this year that IMO any other team would have done the same, but you can't take away the effort and shit he had to endure to get the crown. That and his speed puts him on the level he deserves, and the asterisks folks are trying to add to his title this year is pretty lame.
