Here's video of the '84 125 race, at 2:00 you see Ward half jump up it and O'Mara cases it behind him. Later at 3:38 O'Mara lands it clean

As someone who came into riding after this this era, that track looks like dog shit, but kinda cool at the same time Grinning

I texted my buddy today to see if he knew who Grendel was, he says Steve swears it wasn’t him.

After I posted that I looked up Grendel's account just for grins. He stopped posting in 2011 when the sleuths were getting close, but in February 2020 he popped back in just to post "Mike Alessi". lol

The reason Saddleback Park closed was the land owner (The Irvine Company, a massive real-estate company) was tired of being involved in lawsuits. Rumor has it the Irvine Company recently sold the land.
I was. Dammit, insert face palm here. Wink

Three 125 cleared it, Lance Moorewood, Jeff Ward, and Johnny O. Lance did it once I believe, and clipped the top, Jeff Ward and O’mara never made it clean. A few other 125s tried it, but never made it, just not enough HP.

The leap itself wasn’t hard, it was getting the speed to do it. A much harder jump on the track was called the Wedge, that was the hardest jump to date at that time, and scary.
Where on the track was the wedge? Was it there in the 84 race posted in this thread? I love this stuff because I live real close to the track and yes, it could be re opened tomorrow.

Uptite was very fast, and still is when he rides. He was fast in the 80s and then stopped for personal reasons, and then started racing again 25 or 30 years later and then suddenly stopped again. I understand why he wants to keep anonymous, he has a lot to lose. He’s not the guy who you were probably told he was, a lot of people think he is the guy who owns a construction company called Uptie, that is a guy who post here under Steiny but he hasn’t posted in a while, he’s to busy posting in the private rooms with his upidy motocross insiders.

Steiny lived up the street from me back in the day. Definitely not the same person.

There was some nasty ruts/kickers on the lip of the jump and yea along with the TIGHT corner at the bottom made it tricky to get over if you didn't hit it just right.
I will agree though the Wedge was very dangerous but to claim Suicide Mountain"wasn't that hard to get over" is ludicrous.

Look at that picture of Hannah, he might disagree with you. Cheerful
It's not hard to figure out who he is. He was a pro and was fast. I don't always agree with him, but respect his opinions.

The Saddleback layout was killer and the start was fucking awesome! The prep those days was a little different. If they prepped Saddleback like they do tracks today…omg!…and If they did the infield-access-by-tunnel thing. the spectating would’ve been second to none, as it was already quite good! Hell, at Carlsbad they ran nationals, and GP’s for that matter, and they’d go YEARS at a time without grading or ripping the track! Things were different back then.

Let’s bring this back on topic.

The first picture is the section before the wedge, you make the turn after the Magoo Double, make a right at the bottom of the hill, go up an incline, (second pic) make a u turn back down, hit a little drop off and then the Wedge.

What made that tougher or more dangerous ? I think I remember reading race coverage in MXA when Kent Howerton was in the 500 class for Kawasaki and it said Kent wouldn't attempt the wedge . Wardy clearing it in that pic ?

Scott Manning demonstrates the number of G-forces you get when you didn't quite get enough altitude.

I was on the track that day in the 250 class. I survived a ragged suicide double attempt and barely rode away after coming up short. I rolled it the rest of the day and came out 13th, the top finisher out of everyone who paid for their own entry fee and tires.
Top Privateer at the last Saddleback Nat. Quite the claim to fame, that must have opened some eyes - or not.

I recall hearing that Irvine Co. owned the land and leased it. The leasee got sued a bunch of times and didn't even file a response and the Irvine Co kept ending up in court.

I do not believe an industrial complex was constructed on this site. pretty sure it is undeveloped to this day

My memory is vague between saddle back and Indian dunes but I do remember a water truck rolled and people were seriously injured (or worse)
