Getting back into riding! Want to mainly ride tails, woods, etc near Reading, PA.  Grew up learning to ride on a small KDX100 during family summer vacations, mainly flying around a grass field.  Had a FZR for a few years in my 20's. No 50 years old, 5'11" and 190lbs.

Shops hear me are telling me to buy a KTM 350 or 400. My budget is, let's say $4k.  Good with a wrench - so if I get a bike that needs to be modified, I am comfortable doing the work.

QUESTION 1: 125 or 250 Have been leaning towards a 2-stroke due ease of maintenance and fun factor. Would a 125 be enough? Would a 250 with mods (i.e. flywheel weight, throttle tamer) be too much?

QUESTION 2a: Assuming a 125, I have been leaning towards a Yamaha YZ125 - that would be modified for the woods (flywheel weight, 18" rear, etc.) or do I get a 2015 KTM 125 TC or the KTM 125 TE - i have seen all available for sale used locally.

QUESTION 2b: Assuming a 250, also looking at a YZ 250 modified like the 125, but add a throttle tamer.

Please help! Need advice from this experienced group!

1A: There really no maintenance tip towrd the 2t anymore, both platforms have their advantages maintenance wise. Fun factor definitely may point one way or another, though.
2A: YZ125X model comes from Yamaha with 18" rear wheel, side stand, and smoother power delivery.
2B: Same, as question 2a but YZ250X

Why not try a Honda 250x or Yamaha wr250? Something with an electric start is nice. They are nice and plush when riding on trails. We had a honda and it seemed pretty bullet proof.

@876Moto- all great points! Thanks, I will check those out as well! I was leaning towards the YZ125 or 250 due to a recommendation from a local shop.

If I were in your shoes I’d be looking at a 250f either something like a ktm 250xcf or a Yamaha 250fx. Both of those bikes have great resale and are known to be generally bulletproof.

A 125 and 250 two stroke is fun but no matter what they are finicky. Jetting and power wise, a 125 is either on or off generally and a yz250 for me was not fun in the woods. Yes the suspension was good but it was rigid and the power was abrupt and just generally not much fun for trail riding. Some good racers make it work well but not for an older guy coming back to the sport to have fun.

Third, some will say not necessary but the e-start is huge. Especially in the woods when you’re at awkward angles such as hills and rocks and you will most likely stall a lot more on the trails.

Other recommendation if you want a 2 stroke is a 250/300xc/tx/te/XCW. They have the e start bigger tanks and a kickstand. They make look stupid but if you’re not racing a kickstand makes life a lot easier. Plus the 250/300 woods bikes from the Austrian brands have a much easier power and to manage than the yamahas. I’ll make that statement from personal experience owning multiple of each of those bikes.

125 or 250? I say go 200. My favorite bikes of all time have been my KTM 200 MXC and my current Beta 200RR. Absolutely perfect trail machines for what I need and want in a bike.

I am about the same age and size as you and live in Manheim PA. Raced moto in the 80s and 90s and didn’t ride off road again till was 48. Got a used YZ250 for some lite moto and trail riding. Got more into the woods and worked on making the YZ more off road friendly. It was ok but was never a woods bike. I bought a used KTM 250xc and have been super happy with it. Way better in the woods than the YZ. E start is the best thing ever. Still ride some moto which it is fine for since I’m not racing, but it is great in the woods! I would highly recommend an actual woods bike instead of trying to make one out of a moto bike.

X2 on a 300. I’ve own 3 yz250s, 2 KTM 250xc’s, yz125, yz250fx, kx250f, yz450f, kx450f. By far, the best vet woods bike is my husky tx300. Having said that, might be tough to find one in that price range, my 2nd choice would be a woods yz250. Great bike as well (very easy to find parts for), the 300 is just a step ahead imho.

I would just buy a good running bike and go tear it up for several months. A crff, klx, or TTR would be a good starting point. After you get back into it and retrain your eyes to look forward and get your muscle memory back, then look at a faster bike. I have a YZ450FX and I still enjoy plucking along some trails on my wife's TTR. I really wish Honda would come back out with the XR250/400 with fuel injection.

For someone who wants an old school full-sized XR-style trail bike with some modern conveniences, Kawi has brought back the KLX300R but with EFI, e-start and updated ergos. And it's realtivey low-priced, as you would want for that type of bike.

I like what Timo recommends here.

Several years ago we took a crf230 on a colorado trip as a spare bike when we all had ktms, and it seemed like there were times grown men were trying to decide who got to hop on the crf haha they are fun to ride!

Thanks again to everyone who weighed in. It is greatly appreciated!!

So, here is what I ended up with…. a previously enjoyed 2017 KTM 300 XC-W.  It is amazing! Though, I have installed a G2 Throttle Tamer and switched out the Yellow power valve spring for then Green one.  Will provide more updates as I get more time on the bike.

You just ended up with what is probably the best woods bike of all time. Nice choice!

Congratulations! Great bike. My advice would be to run the heaviest flywheel weight you can find. I run 14oz. on a 300 Gas Gas.

What happened to the $4000 budget ? My first thought was , damn he’s not getting a newer 300. I’m guessing closer to 7 on that one ?? Great bike. That’s what I would have suggested if you stated a higher budget. May need a larger helmet to contain the smiles on that thing 😁 It will open up new terrain that you’ve never seen.
