I cut my new chain to short and pressed one of the links back in to make it Long enough is it safe to run?

I personally wouldn't run it. Too much risk IMO. How much is a chain, $125? Check the prices of new cases + hospital bills. I 'd buy a new chain.

I also dont like the thought of this. Those things are like staked on there and take a lot to split. I cant imagine its as good repressed as it was to begin with. Health care is expensive like mentioned above, and broken cases arnt too cheap either.

I wouldn't trust that. What JBlain said above.. Maaaaybe run another master link but even that's sketchy. What would Jade Dungey do?

Not worth it, press fresh rivets or even use another master link if you’re in a pinch.

X3 on the extra master link. That's way safer than a re-pressed link.

I would also be a little worried to run that.

However, I don't think you need to spend $125 to replace it. I've been running the Primary Drive o-ring for a few years and have gotten 60-80 hours out of them with only one adjustment after break in. I'm not the fastest guy in the world but I can usually handle the Vet A class at a local/regional off road race pretty easily. I also know a guy who has made the gate at 3 nationals this year in the 450 class that runs them.....so for those who are inevitably going to say they are junk...how many gates you made the fast 40 for?

I did the same years ago. I was young and out of options, it never gave me any issues. I just peened the ends of the link I removed over on an anvil. You press a link out to cut a chain to its correct length. As long as the link was pressed in straight I see no issues. If you peen the link, it will never come out...What is the big issue?

Extra master link is the way to go. Lots of guys that swap paddle tires use them for more clearance.

Did you use a proper chain press to put it back together or just a chain breaker in reverse? Proper presses come with the piece that re rolls the pin.

In saying that I wouldn’t run one on my dirt bike, I would go 2 masters while my new chain was on order

Tusk chain user here as well. Check the specs. Has a pretty high tensil strength from what I remember.

Buy a rivet link and replace the link you peened in. No need to waste a new chain over a link.

I did the same a few years ago and just ran an extra master. When is the last time you had a chain fail at the master link? So if it’s 1 in a million the worst case is you just doubled your chances.

I wouldn’t even do the double master unless it was a rivet link. Even then I know I personally would be thinking about it and I don’t need all that distraction

If there are enough links to run it on a different brand of bike (ie: Yamaha, or Kawi) they run 114 link chains where as Honda runs 116 links you might be able to sell it and recoup some of your money.

Just run a extra master link, I had a bunch of new takeoff chains from a few years ago and I wanted to use them up but they were shorter than what comes on my newer bikes so I took one and cut a link or two off it and added it to the shorter chain and with a extra master link I was fine, No problems. They were good Regina chains so I didn't want to waste them.

Grind the axle slot deeper into the swingarm. This method will allow for sweeter wheelies. Always a plus in a world of negatives.

Peen the pin ends and run it.
It will be fine, I've been re riveting chains for 50 years and not had a fail.

You might be able to turn your Chain Block around and run the chain with no further mods.

Most chain blocks have one side longer than the other.

Might make your bike turn better with the shorter wheelbase too.

Good luck,

Randy is confused because "master links" has a completely different meaning in golf

As much as I don't like to admit it, a fair few years ago I did the same as I had a time of penury = seriously broke.

We had chains from Husabergs that were set to the lengths of the ADR test sprockets. As in Road use gearing - well, bloody Land Speed Record gearing, on the 650s and 570s.

They were high quality DID X ring chains, that were too short for the Bergs as we set them up for real dirt use, and my 500. So, I just did what you did - had one to cut for link additions, and used 2 joining links. I didn't even use Rivet links. I kept a hawk eye on the clips, as I do with any chain. and had a few seasons worth of chains. With no problems at all. Not really the "correct" thing to do, but, needs must as they say.Blush
