‘80 something JR 50 in ‘89. I can still remember having a dream that I got a new JR to replace mine and I was heartbroken. Being so young, I thought it was real when I woke up.

1974 Yamaha GT MX 80. Got it brand new from Orange County Yamaha in Garden Grove. I remember it like it was yesterday..... I rode the wheels off that bike

2001 XR80 sitting in my Dad's shed Christmas morning 2000. Took me what felt like a full minute to release the clutch on my first ride out the door of the shed, as I slowly turned left and ran directly into a box scraper at 3mph.

Wow...kinda forgot how useless these things looked. I was already a moto fan back then, and rode mine like I was pretty sure all my heroes did...and of course, beat the living hell out of it. Haha! Oh well...you gotta start somewhere, I guess.

After a 100 dollar minibike with a briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine & a jackshaft drive - a Hodaka Combat Wombat was first bike with wheels larger than 10" in diameter.

A 1970 Bultaco Pursang. A basket case that I bought with paper route money, and my buddy helped me split case and rebuild the crank in HS metal shop. The black and white does not do the ugly justice. The prior owner had repainted the original silver red scheme with candy flake purple and green and stuck a yellow petty fender on the front.

But it was my first bike and I paid my way (folks would allow a bike but not pay for it).

1978 cr250r. Bought it from my brother in 1982 or 1983 (whenever Andre Malherbe wore that awful jersey I have on in the pic). Not the greatest beginner bike.

My first bike was a 1982 YZ80J. The classifieds ad indicated it was a 1983 model, which was a highly revised model (that I really wanted), and when my Dad brought me to check the bike out in a back alley at night in Minneapolis, I was too excited to care and I put down my hard-earned $350 that minute. I'd never ridden a motorcycle, so I didn't know different, but I do recall AFTER riding a 1986 KX80 that I said "A radiator behind the number plate ... WHY?!" I took such good care of that bike and it really formed my love of motorcycles and riding.

The 1987 CR80 was my DREAM BIKE! Never got to ride one though. That bike still looks AMAZING to me. I recall seeing one for the first time at the first motocross race I attended ever in Grantsburg, Wisconsin (another first!). There was a local hotshot on one and he absolutely ripped. He was a machine and I was completely drawn in from that point on.

DOT 197cc1953 era. My uncle had this in his garage for many years and challenged me that “if I could get it running, I could have it “
Spent many hours cleaning up carb, resetting points and cleaning up spark plug. She fired up about third kick.

Interesting Story, Grantsburg is my Favorite track it's also where I had my first ever race, it was on the 87CR80
I didn't win I got 9th overall after 3 crashes which I was happy with. There were two kids that were Super fast Loretta's bound kids, they used to battle only each other and lap the whole field. I beat my two close buddies that lived in my neighborhood so I was happy about that 😀
That 1987 CR80 absolutely Ripped it had the hardest hitting power band ever!
In hindsight I think it was Rich I had no clue. But if you didn't keep it on the pipe it bogged like crazy and then would hit abruptly, even on top end it was fast!. I Honestly think it was faster than the 1991 KX125 I had after it.
Shorty After getting the CR my dad took it for a rip on the street, and opened it up in 6th gear and came back with his eyes watering and as big as flying Saucers, and Said holy shit this thing is fast! He wasn't into dirt bikes and I honestly don't think he expected it to be that fast.
I think he was worried about getting it for me after that.
In hindsight I'm really glad I had the kd80 first, The CR80 would have been hard to learn on!

First real MX bike was a 74 Honda Elsinore. Had a 71 Yamaha DT 250 converted into an MX before than. My girlfriend at the time got this pic and told me to take off my boots and leathers before I hit this mud puddle. She even took the rubber band out of her hair so my bell bottoms wouldn't get snagged in the chain.
