Motocross legend Ryan Hughes who was injured at Pala Raceway on February 13, 2013. Ryan sustained a number of serious injuries to his spine including a broken T-3 and shattered T-4, which initially caused paralysis to most of Ryan’s extremities. Fortunately for Ryan the paralysis was only temporary and he was able to regain feeling and movement after doctors successfully fused his back from T-2 to T-6. As of February 15th Ryan has endured 2 surgeries, the first surgery was performed when a blood clot again caused partial paralysis due to swelling near the spine and subsequent pressure to the spinal cord, and the second to stabilize his back.

Lets hope there is no 3rd round.
When he talks about neck braces and paralysis, he is experienced. He's a hero, get well soon Ryno! That ride at LL's was legend, and made a mockery of the modern bike theory and bikes have gotten too fast. So many here unwilling to think outside the box, Ryno has never been one of those. Funny to think that MX'er's as a group are mostly follower's, we need more independent thinkers like Ryan.

Hoping for a full recovery for Rino. I am curious if a neck brace would have made a difference, it’s a fair question and not a shot at him. We all choose our equipment, so it’s ultimately on us.

True. In Mx there are 39 followers and 1 leader. Cool

I never want to see this happen to anyone, and I hope Ryno has a speedy recovery and clean surgery. For all things he's going through he sounds like his mind is in the right spot.

I hope you people in here on your high horses don't fall off and hurt yourselves.

Get well Moto brother, we all know injuries are the worst part of this sport. I have empathy for him, anybody who has been riding/racing most of their life can relate to his situation. It’s dangerous, but we keep coming back for more. Injury after injury we come back for more, it’s hard to walk away from something you love and feel that it is part of your identity.

He is experienced in doing scientific research on the pros/cons of neck braces? I don't think so. He is a whack job that purposely goes against science just for attention. His views on safety and other topics in the news are about as sane and well thought out as the followers of Charles Manson. The irony here is just way way way too thickkk. If you take such a hard stance on topics and act like you are the final word and then what you preach comes right back in your face then you deserve what you get. Especially when your final word is just an ill informed opinion.

Karma is undefeated.

Would a neck brace have prevented any of his injuries?

If not, where is the irony?

Ryno: has some unorthodox but strong beliefs in riding, technique, and equipment. Sometimes crosses the line when trying to prove his point.

Ryno: breaks his back, suffers temporary paralysis

Some vital users: eat shit hippie!

Like I said, some classy folks in here. Every single one of you would wish Ryno well if you saw him in the hallway of the hospital.

Ryno is a douche. Anyone telling people not to wear safety gear on a motocross bike is a penis. And anyone who goes off on a rant an hour after someone dies riding at glen helen deserves zero attention and should not be praised.

Safety gear to me are boots, helmet, mx pants/jersey, gloves, goggles, knee pads and chest protector (which is what I’ve always worn). I don’t recall him telling anyone not to wear any of those items listed, do you? Anything beyond that is open for debate.
A jersey is protection? From what, the sun?

This is definitely the type of injury we as riders all fear the most. I don’t wish this on any of my fellow moto bros much less Ryno. I hope he heals up good and fast and hope he gets back to riding again.

That being said I appreciate his perspective on things even if I don’t always agree because it makes you think about things in a different light. We are always learning and evolving so it’s good to have those with different or unpopular opinions. It brings up good discussions. Weird part about this though is for me his injury ironically makes me want to start wearing a neck brace again. I’ve been going back and forth about it since starting riding again last year after a long lay off. I’m not sure if it would have helped him or hurt him more. Nobody is. However I’ll be damned if I’m laying in that bed with his same injury knowing there was something I could have been wearing to prevent it. To each their own though.

The same irony of Keefer listening to Ryno and ditching his knee brace and then after years of knee brace use and no injuries..... Bam, he gets a knee injury. Would the knee brace have saved Keefer? Who knows? But just like wearing a seat belt, the chances are less if you choose to use the available safety equipment (based on research, not my opinion).

To clarify, I am not pro/against neck brace or whatever.... Ryno is obviously free to pick and choose what he uses. The difference is that he comes out and states his ill informed opinion as fact and people that look up to him follow him. It is irresponsible and reckless when you have such a large following.

I doubt anyone wants to see him or anyone else hurt, I definitely don't. That said I don't respect many of his views and I also don't respect the times he has "crossed the line" as you admit. None of that changes or goes away since he's currently injured.

But Ryno didn't break his neck...or hurt his knee...So where is the irony in him not liking knee and neck braces?

Pretty sure he said C-5, C-7 damage. That is the neck.

Hopefully there is some way to express that you wish a full, complete, and speedy recovery for Hughes while still recognizing the irony of his seeming contempt for modern medicine, safety gear, etc…….

This totally sucks! At least he’s not talking about MX kicking his ass like last time and that he’s done riding. Love him or hate him. How can you not love this guy?? At least you know where he stands. Swap just dropped some recent footie that should give his fans and the haters a better idea of what makes him tick. Looking forward to part2.

Push the bike Ryno!!

Exactly. There is a middle ground in this.

I think he's a total nut, and yes there is some OBVIOUS irony in him getting hurt like this. Also the irony after his unhinged rant after the guy died at Glen Helen.

BUT I also hope me makes a full recovery, and gets to do whatever he wants after he recovers. His opinions are just that...HIS opinions. Anyone who listens to what he says as gospel was already leaning that way anyway.

Ah, my bad then…for some reason I thought he broke his back in this crash? (Not his neck), maybe that was another crash? If he broke is neck…then yes, I can see the irony (even though I agree with him on neck braces…and there is no proof of would have prevented this injury rather than making it worse).

Even so...a moto brother is down...I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Some of these posts and posters are downright pathetic. Don't like what Ryno has to say, don't listen. Hope he heels up as well as can be expected.

Safety gear to me are boots, helmet, mx pants/jersey, gloves, goggles, knee pads and chest protector (which is what I’ve always worn). I don’t recall him telling anyone not to wear any of those items listed, do you? Anything beyond that is open for debate.
Can you elaborate on why some safety items are not up for debate but some are?

Why are gloves a non debatable item but a neck brace is?

Hey Jason, how ya been?

The word you're searching for is "hypocrite"

I and everyone wishes him well, no one wishes him harm or ill health, but at the same time, if you're preaching one thing and doing another, don't people have to right to call it out?

If not now, when, after everyone forgets?

No one wishes him bad, but his words does influence others.
