As a Motocross Father what's the first thing you teach your kid?

Sometimes “slowing down” and riding smoother will allow you to go faster.

Live to ride tomorrow, one out of control lap could cost you weeks of riding and fun.

Not opposed to protective gear all the time just think preventative is always best.
You’re going to crash-period. No matter how good your technique, no matter how fast or slow.

We can certainly discuss the idea that some protection may adversely affect technique and make injuries more likely due to more crashes…but if you’re teaching technique before stressing (at a minimum) helmet, boots, and goggles, you’re prioritizing poorly.

Keep it together at school and everywhere else. Average kids don’t get a bike and race entry’s handed to them. You must be above average to keep this wonderful machine.
My kids are 39,42 and are still very much above average humans. Bikes played a big part in that. But just love your kids that’s what they need most

I put my two kids on a bike sitting on a milk crate and let them learn all the controls before they ever got to ride it. Brakes and throttle were the most important.

First thing my dad taught me when we went to the races, all you can do is your best. He made it clear he didn't care where i finished as long as I gave it everything I had.

Did you start this thread to discuss the Deegan look-back crash only to have it turn into wholesome fatherly discussion?

Go to school, get good grades, get a good education, and when you're older, get a good paying job because this can be an expensive sport.

Make sure you're having fun and enjoying it. Maybe not always in the moment, but in a general sense.

The sport is too dangerous and expensive not to be.

I'm not even saying that the protective gear will hurt and I understand that everyone who will ever get on a dirt bike will crash. I do not ride my bike without gear unless I'm putting through the pits or something.

1) Technique
1a) Protection

This is too dangerous to do if you’re not having fun. So tell me and we will stop and try something new.

Holeshot. It's way safer running out front than being back in the blender......

Really though, our #1 rule is when you crash, get off the track. Don't worry about positions lost or the bike.

I don't like the get off the track advice. I can't count the number of people I've seen get lit up by trying to get off the track without checking surroundings. Number 1 thing when you crash is situational awareness. Don't run into someone's path.

Don't cut the track or go backwards !
Almost hit a poor kid on a 50 with my 06 CR250 I pretty much called it a day after that heart rate went through the roof.

First thing was check your gas and chain. When racing started it was that there are no “what if’s” or “if this” or “if that”. When the results are up that’s it, racing’s racing.

Don't take out your shortcomings on your kid like the soccer/baseball moms/dads do at the local parks. Keep it fun is key as mentioned earlier.

okay... now if you think your kid is really fast and going somewhere with this, have them sign a contract with you so you don't get replaced by another manager. Sorry Tony as in Alessi.

Never, ever, tell Mom how much that cost.
Laughing I've said this to my daughter about pretty much every piece of moto-related equipment.

First thing my dad taught me was that it didn't matter how far up I finished on Sunday as long as I could climb onto a tractor on Monday. The kids parked next to us usually were taught was that if they didn't win they were walking home.
