The Lawrence boys on the new CRF video.

We're well used to hearing pro riders on their 250s, with raced tuned motors, open pipes, aggressive cam profiles and increased rev ceilings- we're used to it, we see/hear it all the time.

We are also used to hearing 'normal guys ride stock bikes..

But watching that video of the Hunter boys riding the stock bike, it makes an unusual noise. What is it? Its not your 'normal' rev limiter, it doesn't sound over-revved, are they simply riding it right at the edge, teetering on the limiter cutting in?? Or have Honda done something different with this motor?

OEM ECU's usually use a soft-cut limiter, on race stuff there's often a hard-cut limit which is more aggressive and cuts ignition entirely or a lot more dramatically, hence the pops and bangs, set at a higher rpm and it can be essential and also cut in earlier on highly strung engines.

Sounds like a snoaring noice. The old first gen crf250x sounded the same close to the rev limiter.

Cant say that it sounds pretty..

My buddy’s KTM back in ‘12 or so sounded like that as well. Always thought it sounded like a VW Beetle wound tight, lol.

That sound makes ears bleed... after market pipe could help.

A 2 stroke would definitely help with the sound.

It sounds a lot like the Yamaha. I personally love that raspy tone

I agree on it sounding like a Yamaha. I may be wrong but I thought it was caused by a dual fire ignition?? A second firing of the spark plug a bit later in the cycle?

Reminds me of when my old air compressor kicks on in the shop.

Same sound you get out of the Troll's Yamaha... Not quite as crisp as his but still sounds like wet fart noises. Not my favorite.

Sounds like a mini 450 to me. The bike sounds really good and that’s coming from that is nowhere near being a fan of Honda.

This bike and the Yamahas sound like an air cooled VW with a stinger.

Definitely sounding Yamaha-esque... their factory 250s sound way throatier this year in the nationals compared to last year too so Honda have obviously come up with something

What you might be hearing is the camera mic clipping

Db limiter on the camera mic it sounds like. It’s pretty easy to start clipping decibels if it’s on auto and only recording through the camera and not a dedicated sound recorder. Who knows what the camera set up is, but that is a highly likely scenario.

That track looks really weird. It’s almost all wood chips, I wonder why Honda had the intro there. But I was thinking the same thing, doesn’t sound like they have to rev the piss out of that bike to get it to go. It sounds really good actually. Wish I was 40 pounds lighter, I’d have a deposit down on one for sure

When can HRC start racing the factory version of that bike?

Mountain View is among my favorites, I wish it wasn't a 7 hour drive.

Grew up on that track! Back in the day they took dirt from our farm. They have done some other Honda releases there as well.

Both Martin bros YZF and several other YZF´s have the same annoying sound, i hate it! Sounds as if its a twincylinder or a really rich running (or cold) 2-stroke. First time i have heard it on a Honda

Just watched it again, mic chopping the top off is a fair shout, either way those things sound gutsy, not the best noise but sound strong, and they look awesome. I'm still lovin both of these Lawrence lads too, gonna be interesting next year!

Haha I've been hearing bikes make this noise for years! First it was the Kawasaki 250 then it was Yamaha and now it's apparently the Honda..
I've tried to ask my mate who's a mechanic and he never seemed to hear what I heard and I was thinking I might've been imagining it haha but I went to watch them riding one day and one of the bikes was doing it and... yeah he didn't have an answer for me haha
