It's not so much the 300 mile trip, but the towing of a trailer. I tow a 14' cargo trailer with bikes and gear when going to ride and get around 10mpg from my F150 ecoboost. Over one third of the miles on my truck are towing miles. An EV is not in the cards for me until faster charging and good infrastructure are in place. Not sure how many miles an EV will go on a full charge with trailer in tow, so "charge anxiety" would be a thing.
You are not the target market for this vehicle at this time.

There just isn't enough electric charging infrastructure in place for me to get on board with this stuff just yet. As of right now, gas is freedom to go anywhere, fill up immediately no matter how remote the area, and continue on your way for another 350+ miles. With electric you have to plan out your route and make sure where you are going will have electric charging stations. I don't want to have to think about if the place I'm driving to in middle Tennessee will have an electric charging station or not, and if not, where I have to go to 'charge up'. Maybe in ten years that will be a thing of the past, but I'll be sticking with ICE for awhile.

How often are you honestly making continuous 300+ mile trips in your pickup truck?

99% of your mileage is going to come from daily driving when you are home each evening and can charge over night.

True. I think that for our family, we'd ideally have a couple of cheap electric "around town" cars and possibly one ICE car for longer trips. We do a fair amount of 100+ mile round trips because we are in a more rural area, but ideally we would use electricity for our commuting to work and such. And with electricity at $.03 per kwh, it would be 'practically free' to drive other than the expense of the vehicle itself.

I know a guy who bought a used Nissan Leaf for commuting and it is ideal for that but he purchased it from a seller in Seattle. The range of the Leaf that he bought was too low to actually make the drive over the mountain passes so he had to trailer it home. But once he was able to do that, it's been a great deal for him. He went from driving his Chevy 2500HD 4WD Crew to the Leaf and it's worked out really well so far.
I leased a Fiat 500E a couple years ago- couldn't pass up a $59 per month lease payment. Besides being a hoot to drive, it was great always having a fully charged vehicle in the morning, parking spots that normally looked tight are actually quite spacious in a clown car, and the lack of maintenance was quite nice.

For it's intended purpose of running around town, it was a great car. Freeway driving would empty the battery way too fast- and running it at it's top speed of 88 mph would drain the battery about like there was a dead short.

The F150 E will probably work great for the majority of truck owners. Most don't really work their trucks (as evidenced by a 5' bed), and very few people drive 500+ miles in a day. For those that really work their trucks, tow even semi-regularly, drive long distances, or live in the middle of BFE, there are many other options available.

the more I see electric cars, and new cars that are computers on wheels, the more I want to buy an old square body and cruise. 4 speed manual and a carburetor for me please.

How long until cars start getting hacked and taken over to cause destruction?

Bound to happen at some point.

Something to think about. Maybe we'll have to park our electric cars by placing them on some kind of stand, like we do with motorcycles. Then again, modern cars already have lots of hackable computer stuff, as well. It doesn't seem to be a problem yet.

more of a maintenance thing for me.... a billion sensors all talking to each other non-stop... just more stuff to fix and replace. The new BMWs are garbage (last 10-12 years). Saw a new Mercedes ad bragging about have 6 different screens in it. Looked like a terrible time.

I've never been a truck guy, but I would definitely consider this as a daily driver. Driving 100 mile round trip for work 5 days a week, it would be nice to just plug it in when I got home instead of going and filling up every other day. Not having to worry about oil changes is nice also.

Weight is less of a concern than aerodynamics when towing. I've seen YouTube videos of Tesla vehicles towing. It's been shown that there are range reductions when towing at highway speeds of up to 75%. I'll keep my ICE truck for towing, thank you.

Thanks for sharing, didn't know Ford got that 300 mile range with 1,000lbs in the bed. Good to know.

It’s such a joke that the extended range comes with a 50k price hike.

So that means you need to order it with the premium platinum lariat edition with the massaging seats and other bull shit.

Truck prices are so fucked.

Neighbor just came home with a crew cab Duramax with a service bed. He was about 70k all in.

If you've ever driven a Tesla you know how good EV can be. Personally I would love a EV Sprinter type van, but for my current situation the charging infrastructure would need to get vastly better. I am curious what kind of charging miles one could get from a generator.

Wonder the range would be with a 5 gallon gas can and this in the back of the truck ?

That’s an interesting thought. Could run that while at the track and maybe have the range to get back that way potentially. Those generators run a long long time on 5 gallons don’t they?

Well you sent me down the rabbit hole.

Honda generator:
2200w
Tank size .95 gal
Runtime on a tank 3.2 hrs
Output from 1 tank (1 gallon) 7040 Wh (7 kWh)
Output from 5 gallons 35 kWh @ 16 hours runtime

F150 lightening (standard battery)
Battery capacity 125kWh
Range 230 miles

So 5 gallons in that generator will get you about a 30% charge to the battery, 30% of the range is 69 miles, nice...

And the generator doesn’t have a catalytic converter or O2 sensor or any other type of emission control. So again, you’re talking about driving a “green” vehicle yet charging it with fossil fuels. Explain to me again why an electric vehicle is better for the environment.

The effort/enthusiasm put into electric cars would be better directed at home solar panels with power wall type batteries.

I’m not an engineer, but why don’t the EV makers leave the grill, and instead of a radiator behind it, just put two fans that act like windmills that charge while you’re driving? You wouldn’t have infinite range, but if it could add another 25% to the range that’d help. Although having the “frunk” or whatever it’s called might be worth the trade off. Gear in the front, bike in the rear.

If you put the electrical load on those fans that would be needed to charge the batteries any appreciable amount, they likely wouldn't turn. No matter how fast you drove.

Here's a 2000W marine turbine. The max output would be similar to the calculation I did for the generator above. The blade diameter is 70 inches so it would be about as tall as the truck and you gotta use power to push it so...

It is possible that for a bigger vehicle, like a cargo van, you could attach solar and add some recharging capability. The surface area on a typical car isn't enough to make a difference, this is a according to Elon Musk.

That does me no good when I drive 200 miles into nowhere to go race my dirtbike. That why I was asking about the portable generators as we always have one when we go racing.

To address ATC250R: For me I could careless about the "green" thing, I like EV for the performance aspect. Maximum Torque and any speed any rpm, infinitely tunable. I think it's cool.

Not a truck, but we bought a 2020 RAV 4 LE (least expensive) 2wd, non hybrid mom bomb for running back-and-forth between San Clemente and San Diego (60 miles) With the cruise on 65 it runs @1,700 rpm and gets 45+ mpg. At $4.00 per gallon that’s a little over ten bucks round trip. I wonder how much $ my electric meter would rack up to get a Tesla to go 120 miles ? I think if you want an EV you’d have to have solar electric panels to go with it ?

The least efficient model 3 is listed at 25kWh/100miles or .25kWh/mile. San Diego residential electricity averages $.31/kWh which is high. So it would use roughly 30kWh of battery costing $9.30. My electric cost would be about half that.

Here's a great video I recommend watching on solar charging a car. The thing that everyone needs to keep in mind is that it takes alot of energy to make a vehicle the size, weight, and shape of a car or truck move, either at speed or starting from a stop. It doesn't matter where the power comes from, electric cars don't magically lower the amount of energy required.

Takes energy to make energy. Can tow a 100kwh generator behind the truck maybe and run it forever minus stopping for fuel for the generator.
