I did listen to the interview. He talked about the kind of testing they do. Basically as everyone here probably knows they are distributing force with the brace. They know what the brace can handle and how much energy it can distribute. They know what it takes to break a neck, back, collar bone etc. Could something completely weird happen? He says no but probably yes. Are you better off with a brace? probably. Should you wear one? Grow a pair and make your own decision. People like Ryno are uneducated but very skilled riders. This guy would eat him alive in a debate. I would give one piece of advice to young riders find a supermodel to wack to, but don't listen to them for medical advice. Seems pretty straight forward to me. And only listen to Ryno for entertainment.

Good to see that some of you fit the definition of ignorance. “I’m not going to listen but I’ll be sure to come up with assumptions in regards to the topic I decided not to be a part of”.

I listened to the whole interview and here is my take.

1. I think every rider/ parent should listen to the whole interview, review the data on their website and make a informed decision.

2. To me its a no brainer to wear a neck brace, it takes the load that would be placed on your neck and spreads it out to other stronger parts of your body.

3. Dont listen to non medically trained riders talk about YOUR safety and your life/ paralysis.

4. I trust Dr. Leatt, he explained why he made the brace (friend killed riding due to broken neck). He dedicated his professional life to this and no short cuts were taken in design, testing, ect.

5. What else do you want a product to do before you use it? They tested it in labs, on cadavers, computer simulation, reviewed 10 years of EMS data with and without neck braces. And continue to study every time the brace breaks they try to evaluate where it broke (its designed to break at a certain point.

6. Personally I provide anesthesia for a career and work only in orthopedic surgery, to me it makes sense to wear one.

7. It doesnt seem like the brace causes collarbone injuries but even if it does that a easy fix, your neck is a ruined life.

Is nt Ryno main point , that you cant be in proper riding position wearing one . Not if it works or not . Then is it better to ride with something that might protect you but puts you in a bad place on the bike which cause more crashes . Imo. Some people can wear them and it doesn't affect them . Either with long neck s or very flexible people. But i see so many weekend warriors wearing them who should nt . Guy s not in the best of shape say . Who cant see up when wearing one . Its ridiculous and dangerous. being able to see down the track in proper riding position is very important. I think if it doesn't affect you wear one away imo it wont do any harm . But if u can't see 100m down a straight while standing in the proper attack position. You are a danger to yourself and all around you

Yep – but doesn't wear one, so what sort of weight would you throw behind that logic that he must be pro-brace.

If he wore it, ran their stickers, and dismissed everyone as crazy for doubting the product or wanting to see more research, sure, that logic plays out.

But he's actually pretty middle of the road and doesn't wear one, whilst providing a forum for both sides to promote their view and/or product.

Did you listen to the podcast?

While steve does have a vested interest in promoting braces he asked some hard questions and brought up some really hard points. One instance is he mentioned chad reed heard from a doctor a neck brace caused the death of a friend. It was only an anecdotal account however a very serious point to bring up.

Anyways my point is the interview wasnt some neck brace hand job interview, it hit on some very hard questions and provided some very good information.

Big crash at a National after returning from the States and passed away. Not sure the Doc said it, long time ago now, but remember Chad saying in a later, I think Pulp Interview, the data or facts he saw implied the brace caused the fatality. Chad was an A-Stars brace athlete at the time and took it off the next season.

I can't remember which brace he was wearing but it was relatively early days of it and he died at the scene due to head injuries.

Does he talk about new helmet tech at all? With mips, spherical, flex, fly formula, 6-d, etc. the trend has gone toward helmets that limit rotational forces. It seems like limiting rotation should result in less force put into the neck. That would be really cool to see those results.

He did address the fact that the brace can be worn while riding and his brace was worn by riders while winning 15 (I think) world & US MX and SX titles. The number would be higher counting other brands as well. He also addressed that you would at time feel the brace and need to adapt to it.

Well it made it waaaaay easier to go to the parts that really interest you -most times it's 10%.

If you got time to be on Vital, you got time to put it on in the background. If you don't really give a shit what he has to say dont listen and dont ask for a breakdown.
Listening to MX podcasts has become a fulltime job, timewise.
Most times, I start one, then start doing something else, wrenching, cooking, gardening, whatever... and totally stop listening.
I think they're good for people who spend long hours driving.

I only been recently listening to pulp. I definitly enjoy the show. Don’t agree with everything but so what, the content is 99% relatable and entertaining for moto guys.

Even on the radio I generally don’t take endorsements to heart. I’ve never bought a product because someone has a commercial on it.

He did not mention anyone in particular during the interview. He just mentioned it saved several lives. I think it was in reference to the fact that after guys were wearing it the death rate dropped significantly. Thats how I took it anyways.

About what I figured.

It’s not like before the Leatt multiple people a year were dying and now they aren’t. Dakar has always had deaths and always will. Did he mention any of the guys who HAVE died wearing it or was that conveniently left out?

Listen to the interview bud, he gives some pretty good statistics that back up what he says. Believe or not, that's your choice, but he has more data than the opposers.

Plan to listen today, I’ve been on the fence on neck braces for years.

I don’t necessarily think they harm people I’m just not convinced they help a whole hell of a lot either.

As someone who has followed Dakar for over 20 years I just don’t see a drastic drop in deaths since they started wearing neck braces. Like I said, always been a few deaths and still is, they weren’t ever “dropping like flies” so I don’t really see how the Leatt could have saved a ton of lives is all.

I am ignorant to that stuff when it comes to Dakar. Purely anecdotal things I am seeing is, lately it seems like we are hearing about a lot of neck/ back injuries again. It seemed slowed down for a while (possibly coincidence or not I don't know) while neck brace usage is really dropping. I mean it seems weekly we are hearing about another life changing injury. Scary shit.

Bas Vaessen got a neck injury at a British round a couple of weeks ago. He used to wear a brace when he was younger, he stopped using one then he got injured & lost the feeling in his legs for 30 minutes or so. Vowed to wear one again because he said it was the scariest thing that ever happened to him. He did start wearing one again but then he stopped again. As far as I’m aware he wasn’t wearing one when he got injured.

I can’t think of any pro rider that has been paralysed when wearing a neck brace.

Fuck man, I'm really wondering if people are as time pressed as they claim (I claim bs, people like to pretend they're oh so busy, not you specifically mx617, but others in this thread)... the whole pod is 1hr and 40 mins....

1. He goes through his background
2. He talks about the why and how of the neckbraces
3. The cadaver testing they use with some muscle stuff
4. Ryno and gypsy refuse to go, with their claims based on pseudo science.
5. People in positions of influence need to be more responsible, instead of making baseless claims

It's a very very indepth interview and I will not be explaining every point, those are some basic highlights I took from it.

Start listening at 48mins to get to the meat and potatos of the interview.
That's all people asking for cliff notes are really asking for. Just a brief overview "he talked about x and y but never really touched on z", to see if it's worth investing the time into. I can't really play stuff in the background and pay attention to it, if I'm listening, I'm just listening, not anything else.
