Cooper Webb's Best Skill

Webb is a bulldog. He never gives up until after he crosses the checkers.

Here’s my thought/opinion on Webb. He doesn’t have the speed of Tomac, but he is a better racer than ken and Eli. He knows how to attack, and he knows how to defend. I truly believe that if Eli is in front of Webb, and he can’t sprint away, Webb will crack him and make the pass. I think he’s going to be even more dominant as the years go by.

I don’t like the kid, but do give him credit for being a champion. His results do not lie.

I think his special gift is not only making passes as quickly as possible, it seems to me that he is able to use lapped riders to his advantage while making passes.

The lapped will be in the best line, who Cooper is closing in on will have line #2 taken, and Cooper will make whatever is left to end up being better than what line #1 & #2 had to offer.

I think that is what is currently separating him from the pack.

Wasn't it Tedesco that said he learned a lot watching Bubba ride at the test track because he was 1-2 feet lower in every berm than him? He was basically making the track shorter.

Not sure if it's a skill, bit Cooper sure has the knack of ramping it up and peaking at the right point in the season. The killer is that this is usually just when the comp. (In this case, Roczen, Eli, Marvin) are begining to hit walls and experience the mid year slump.

Between Webb’s smooth technique and throttle control, and the KTM’s seemingly greater ability to hook up on slippery tracks, they make the insides work where others struggle.
But did anyone else hear Webb say the other night that he picked up on Tomac’s lines while Tomac was behind him? That right there is superior race craft.

Ever race is gets every position, and ever bit of time that is available. He constantly experiments and changes lines, and then finds what works best. If the best he has is 5th...he gets fifth. If the best is a win...you are not keeping him off the top step. He is smart, and relentless.

I honestly thought Tomac would beat him during the week's race and I was surprised how he couldn't catch back up to Webb once he made the mistake and lost a couple of seconds. I actually like Webb, he never seems to get flustered out on track and has a belief in himself that is unmatched...its probably easy to be that way when deep down you know you have the complete package whereas Ken and Eli don't. His mental toughness is key for me, he doesn't make a mistake even when Tomac is on his rear wheel all race. On his night, Tomac is unbeatable but a usual Tomac night means starting 8th or 10th out the gate and playing catchup...by this point Webb is so far ahead because he always starts well. He's a bulldog, reminds me of RC in some aspects.

Totally agree.

Tomac can be a little bit faster on one lap but his riding style costs him a lap on 20 laps especially when he's playing catchup. When the gap is so tight, you can't just miss a lap against a grinder as Webb.

He did it on the Yamaha 250 also. Stayed super low while Bowers, or Craig particularly, were strikingly higher being heavier.

His lines and ability to change it up are levels above the other guys. And he doesn’t panic. The others are prone too it.

That may be a bad way to run a Yamaha. It may explain why he is taking off on the ktm. It looked like the inside line was hurting him in a couple sections in the heat race, but he fixed that in the main. I thought Roczen faded after Webb passed him, but I think Webb actually went to 110% effort leading up to and after the pass and it almost cost him. The last couple laps Webb was struggling, and you could tell he was completely gassed after the finish line. He couldn’t even fist bump Roczen.

I have to agree. Great racer, the best at the moment. However, him being the champ does nothing for the sport.

Coop is doing the 1% of things during the week the other guys are not. He’s under the right program with Baker and the man. I think he’s sold all in and it’s showing. People call it ice but it’s preparedness.

I wasn't a fan of his, but I'm changing that because that man can race. He's just straight fast and consistent.

DV spoke of this on Pulpmx. Said he is the best cornering" inside maintains momentum and throws hardly any roost compared to others.

I think it's fine on the 250... They've got a distinct motor advantage in that class, I can clearly remember him clearing obstacles from low on the berm or even inside it and Bowers or Craig and Savatgy floating the edges to get the momentum.

Cooper's ability to pull apart a track whilst it's changing mid-race is better than the other guys. Eli tends to hammer his lines and sometimes is late to change... Coop is a bit like Marv or Bagget, always looking around.

His focus is his number one skill IMO. His ability to adapt is amazing as well. IE:cutting off the inside lines and learning to go fast in the whoops in the main. On top of that he’s just as tenacious as almost anyone we’ve seen in a long time. The way he panic revved Roczen going into corners was a display of “not fking around” that has been missing. The kid is impressive.

I can't remember who said it, but seeing Webb after the main event last Saturday it reminded me of it. Webb seems to be able to go seriously deep when he needs to. He looked absolutely exhausted when he finished, slumping over the bars a little bit. Seems like he is able to tolerate the hurt a little more than others. He is also completely unfazed by pressure. 0+ minutes with Tomac on your tail without cracking is unreal!

But it's not black and white. At their level, he only needs to be half a percent better than his competition to get it done.
