It appears to have broken through the hole for the shaft. Definitely nothin to grab onto and shift by hand.

I haven’t found anything that says the actual cause beyond speculation. They way it appears bent in that picture I’m not sure that isn’t a drilled hole for lightening instead of the splines, but again that is pure speculation.

Unfortunately this can be expected with a brand new unproven and untested motorcycle. I'm sure their engineers in Spain are already working on a fix.

Do we know how it broke? I know it sounds crazy since we're talking about Barcia here but I'm guessing it was from making unnecessary contact with someone.

That’s pretty incredible he went as fast as he did and finished where he did in first gear, on a professional supercross track.

Looks like it happened on lap 22 out of 29, if it happened a lot earlier then he probably would of dropped more positions, so 7 laps not too bad. I do find it hard to believe it was in 1st gear though, watching and listening to it going around the track towards the end, but hey just my humble opinion

A little would'a, could'a, should'a Wednesday morning quarterbacking here, but maybe we see a small hole drilled just rearward of the tip pivot and a brake snake to the frame Saturday night to deal with the Austrian owned Spanish use of Chinese recycled cast aluminum?

Barcia said he got off line and hit some tuff blocks and that is where it broke.

PS- I believe it in regards to the shifter, it sure looked like his front was dipping over rhythm sections with no real manipulation.

Haven't seen any pictures.
If you're correct, sure didn't help.

Ages ago, my KTM shifter fell off altogether. Hit something and broke the bolt into the shaft, not much left to do...

I stand corrected, thanks for the info. Like I said I was guessing, and based on history I didn't think it was a bad guess.

I replayed the stsrt a few times, some banging in the first turn. Wonder if it got wacked there? Looks like it fell off with less then 3 mins to go. He just started going backwards on the position board real fast. Actually lucky it didnt happen early. Still got some good points and with kenny getting docked, I think he gets the red plate for Saturday? Crazy racing tues for sure.

This just doesn't make sense to me.

If it broke that early, why wouldn't he come into the pits?

It takes all of ~30 seconds to remove what's left of the old shifter and put a new shifter on? Considering those pit carts have about everything on them, you would think they have a small part like levers and shifters?

If it only takes 30 seconds to remove and put a new shifter on (which I have my doubts, situationally), he still made the right decision.

He finished 25.7 seconds out of the win. A 30 sec stop would have dropped him minimally 2 positions from where he finished (Wilson and Osborne were both under 30 sec from the lead), and that's generously giving that he was going to easily beat Eli otherwise.

There was a notable change in his lap times beginning on lap 22... It wasn't early, it was around 7 laps to go.

Gocha - Figured Barcia was over exaggerating when he said it broke in the first turn.

Three speed factory gearbox is my guess too. European version has already 4 speed gearbox and I would guess that would be only logical to remove first gear for saving weight because it won't get used anyways

He could have at least tried to grab the shaft mid air

It would probably take closer to 1 minute, but even if it was 30 sec, on a 45 sec track, you're almost a lap down right away.

If you look at Eli's lap chart, he averaged 44.00. Barcia averaged 44.78. They did 29 laps so, assuming having a shifter would have given Barcia enough of an edge to be on Eli's pace, they would've had to change it in no more than 22.6 seconds just to be even, and probably less because he wouldn't have come in on lap 0.

Barcia only finished 25 seconds behind Eli. If he had stopped, he would've had to pass 13 riders just to get back to 9th where he finished, and how much would passing them have further slowed him down?

So, technically first gear is second. Didn’t even think of that.

The gear lever is identical to the ktm and husqy, it was just damn bad luck that it broke off.

A face rut won't break a gear shifter off, he most likely got tagged by another rider.
