Hey all,
Looking at buying a new bike. Currently I have a 2017 RMZ450 that I bought new. It’s not a bad bike but I’m ready for something different. I’m a 30+B/C rider. Last Sunday I was lucky enough to ride a YZ450F, KX450, and a FC450. All were really nice bikes. The one I seemed to be the most comfortable on was the KX450. I’m also looking to move my kids from their DRZ70 to a KLX110.

Here’s my dilemma, I live in Michigan. Winter is coming quickly. KLX110 are very few and far between. Honestly can’t find many KX450 bikes available either. Almost all are 2021 models. Of course there are no incentives right now either. I found a close dealer that has a KLX110. He also has a KX450. My RMZ is mint with 21 original hours on it. Problem is wrong time of year and basically no one around here wants them. The dealer I’m talking to is also a Suzuki dealer and flat out told me he almost never stocks them because he can’t sell them.

If I buy the 450 and 110 together he wants $9700 for the 450 and $2600 for the 110 otd. He offered me $2500 in trade on my RMZ. He’s saying it would likely be sent to auction. If I don’t get the 450 in the deal then he wants $2800-$2900 otd for the 110. I’m thinking of at least picking up the 110 but not sure what to do on the 450.

Are you all seeing a shortage of new bikes in your area? Are the 110 machines basically impossible to find? Around here they have waiting lists and potentially months of waiting with no guarantee. I’m assuming no incentives on anything due to low stock and still high demand even on big bikes. Would love to here your thoughts on what you would do.

Thanks

Yep to everything you said. 110's are hard to find anywhere and rebates, incentives, dealers offering discounts are hard to find as well. Around me dealers are selling every unit they get and they're having a hard time getting stock so it's going to be top dollar for anything right now.

For your RMZ, if you don't need the $2500 I would just keep to spring and get more money from it then. Trade in does make the whole thing easier though and you don't have to deal with the hassle of selling a bike.

I'm 30+ B/C guys myself and going through this right now too. I went with the YZ though with the KX being a close second. Only reason I went with the YZ is due to getting a better deal.

I'm in the northeast. Bikes are out there but dealers aren't flooded with inventory like they usually are. I sold my 17 yz450 a few months ago and got top dollar for it. I shopped around for new bikes(250f) but couldn't find a decent deal anywhere. At this point I am just going to wait until spring and re shop again. No point in buying a bike now and having it sit all winter.

I haven't seen a leftover 20' KX or YZ in the state. No deals to be had right now so don't go looking for one. Although a leftover CRF or SXF are decently discounted right now. I picked up a 20' sxf for under msrp after fees and all.

I haven’t even seen any 2020 SX450Fs available either.

I put the RMZ up for $4000 myself. I’ve had a few messages on it but nothing solid as of yet. Wrong time of year. 😬

I think as of now I’m going to scoop up the 110 if it’s still available. I don’t see the price on those getting any better even in the distant future. Way too much demand for them right now. The 450 I’ll probably just wait and try to sell mine first. I’d almost be willing to bet there won’t be any incentives on a ‘21 anytime soon even in the spring as these will likely still be in short supply

No rebates on 21's for a while, if at all. My brother is a Kaw/Polaris dealer and is very low on inventory, like most dealers. Has been all year. He has 1 KX450 right now and a few 250's on the way. No 110's.

He took on SSR to have more bikes to sell and can't get them fast enough either.

Check out Babbitts in Muskegon. Online says they have a 2020 KX450 for $9,300, a 2021 KX450 for $9,600, and a 2021 klx110 for $2,350.

I'd keep that RMZ that has 21 hours on it. It's basically brand new. Put some new plastic and graphics on it, freshen up all the wear items and moto down. You'll be $8K ahead.

Or buy a YZ250 2 stroke.

I just realized your in MI...put the Zook away for the winter and get the kid's KLX in Canada at an excellent exchange rate (You can find someone in Canada to help ya get it).

The way things are in the market right now: I'd hang on to that Zook. I'd send the forks out for a revalve, put the white plug in it, get some VP T4 next srping and I'd be STOKED! The shock on that bike is one of the best production shocks around.

For your boy? I'd get creative and get him something that makes sense both financially and for his "growth" over the next few years...if that's possible...? Everyone form Suzuki to Honda has bikes in that segment.

He's gonna be stoked for Christmas!

Good Luck!

If you want 2021 Kawasaki's I wouldn't wait until spring. Those seem like decent prices to me.

It will take at least a year or two before inventory levels increase substantially.

Be prepared to drive. That’s all. I finally went out of state and saved a ton. I’m in NEPA and ended up driving 3 hours to West Virginia and saved $1500 or so. Take a few hours, make some phone calls, and fill up your tank. There’s still deals to be had.

He could drive to the moon and back and he is not going to save more than a couple hundred on the prices of the bikes he quoted. Tax excluded of course.

The bike is basically brand new. It is in phenomenal condition. I just couldn’t believe how much better the KX worked for me even when the suspension was way undersprung for me. My bike has the suspension done for me. I’ll be honest I’m hating the air forks. I know I could do a spring conversion but I’ve read very mixed reviews on that. I could buy new spring forks but then I’m likely thousands into that.

Yup. I bought a new bike this year, and it was incredibly hard to find.

If you really want a new bike I wouldn't be waiting around. Most of the shops around me are almost sold out of all the 21's they will get for the year, its truly insane. I also would keep the RMZ until spring and likely make a good chunk more on it.

Dang! Cant believe I’m hearing from everywhere that the new bikes are few and far between. It’s just crazy these things are selling so fast. I know there aren’t a ton of new ones out there but what is out is going quick!

I really do appreciate the comments. I know if I hold onto the Suzuki I could likely get more in the spring. I also think that it would be yet another year older as well. Tough decisions. The Suzuki’s really aren’t selling well around here. Not sure about now, but a little while back 2 year old brand new Suzukis were very easy to come by on showroom floors.

I think the market will be better for the Zook in the spring when all the '21's are sold out.

Unless they just sold it, Thompson’s Motorsports in Terre Haute, IN still has a new ‘19 KX450 in stock. That is an identical bike to the 2020, and there is a $750 rebate on those.

If you go the Canada route, I know a bunch of MI guys used to go to a place in London Ontario. Can’t remember the dealership, but they were really helpful with getting the bikes back into the states.

Another option, and I’ve done this a few times, try Ohio. Championship in Toledo always was great to deal with and you could avoid all the fee’s and tax if you called ahead. They had you in and out loaded up in 15 minutes. Not sure if they’re still open, but I got a great deal from Andrews cycles back in like 07 too. Same deal.

If you’re looking for a KTM in MI, try Lake Cycle in Grand Haven. They’re great to work with, no bs fees, he’ll give you a OTD price and that’s what you pay. Really small 1 man shop that’s been around for decades and the owner’s a very fast woods guy. KTM only though.

Im a bit confused?

Your selling a bike to upgrade to something new from a bike that you only used for 21 hours?

Well okay, maybe try updating the 17'

If not....

No shortages from ktm or husky. They are everywhere and lots too choose from. The japanese bikes are a bit harder to come by.

As others have said I would get your kid his new bike and keep the RM. It is basically a new bike and you have put the hours on it so you know it wasn’t abused. It will probably do everything you need it to do and with winter fast approaching you won’t get much riding in. Wait and see where things are next spring.

Update:

So I went ahead and got the new KLX110. Kid loves the bike! I didn’t end up trading the RMZ in. I did however have a rough week last week with selling it. I didn’t want to give it away by any means so I didn’t really budge on listed price. I had a handful of people tell me they wanted it and were bringing cash on a certain day. 2 of them never showed and never bothered to tell me they weren’t coming. I was just about ready to take it down and wait until spring when a guy reached out to me. Yesterday he drove 2.5 hours to my house, brought cash, and gave me exactly what I was asking for it. The RMZ is at its new home and we have a new ‘21 KLX110.

Now the downside. I don’t have a bike. Lol. I have found a couple leftover ‘20 machines at dealers in Michigan so tomorrow I will call around to see if I can get a good deal on one. I know what a new ‘21 will cost and there is a $750 rebate on the ‘20. Maybe I’ll get lucky and find one of these dealers that will give me a better price if they are looking to get rid of their last ‘20.

^^ Congrats. Don't you love selling used bikes to people. Your experience replicates that of almost everyone who has ever sold (or tried to sell) a used MX bike, especially the people who are "on their way" and never show/call. You're more than halfway there now. Good luck with the new 450.

Thanks, I know it’s all apart of selling stuff but if you tell me you’re coming, I’m taking time out of my day to make sure I’m available so it seems like common courtesy if you aren’t going to come to let the seller know. Idk, maybe I’m old fashioned that way.

Bought a 21 KX 450 a few months ago. Only a couple in the state. Was $10.5 OTD. That was about 1K cheaper than anywhere else I could find. Found two 21 YZ 450, both were 12K OTD and sold with in a week. If your not riding this winter waiting might not be too bad. Sold my used bike for a premium so it was a wash basically. $9700 OTD doesn't seem too bad right now. Probably better deals, but they're hard to come by.

The 21 does have a better clutch wich would be 1k or so to swap out. If you take out the jutter spring on the 20 its only a few dollars to swap it for a fiber though.

I’m really wrestling with what is the price difference before it makes sense to buy a ‘20 over a ‘21. Is it $1000, $1500, etc? I’m not terribly worried about the clutch difference as I’m not a clutch abuser. The only thing different on the 2 bikes I know I would need to change is the bar mounts on the ‘20 to run a Fatbar.
