All contracts have a first right of refusal, a rider can sign a letter of intent but if the original team matches then they have the rights to the rider. Honestly, I’ve never seen it done because there is always a reason a rider shops.

Seems like this could be a messy situation if there indeed is a right of refusal for Barcia. The factory team is essentially closing down and the 450 program is being moved under the Star tent. I assume AP7's contract is with Yamaha directly, as is Barcia's but I wonder if Star coming into the picture could be a loophole to for him to get out.

Barcia going to GasGas seems like he really is willing to take a hit to ride a KTMish bike. Giving up his Arai and Alpinestars contracts. One has to think even these recent rides probably don't have him wanting to stay on the Yamaha. All he has to do is go back and watch any of the SLC SX races to remember how bad it was going.

Why does he need to give up Arai & Astars??

If he goes to TLD GasGas, he’d have to wear TLD helmet and gear.

TLD will more than likely be TLD gear...unless it’s different for the 450 rider...

I'm going to assume that the rumors are the GasGas team is going to be sponsored by Troy Lee Designs, so the signing of Barcia may have him signing to GasGas with a TLD gear agreement. Not sure though.

I would guess a rider nearing the end of their career responds to dollar signs. If it means riding a bike you’ve battled with but have also won on, I would assume if the offer is greater than or equal to another team plus gear deal money... I know what I would do.

Especially with the Star team taking over the 450 program, I could see him a being a bit more optimistic continuing his career on Yamaha.

If it ends up going through this way, I am very curious how huge that Star Racing Yamaha will be or if the Factory Monster Energy Yamaha truck remains or something. It seems as if there are 20 people “going to Star”. Grinning

Most of Star riders are directly contracted with Yamaha.

Yamaha just bought a new trailer that is badass. I would assume two rigs with 450’s under one of them alone.

One team that I haven't seen mentioned yet in this thread is the Penrite Honda team. While only a sattelite team, these guys have great backing and I know for a fact that they are in discussions with a number of top 450 guys. Could this be a potential opening for Malcolm Stewart ??

I think Penrite has a team gear deal with Fly Racing. Malcolm has stated numerous times he will only wear Seven gear, thus limiting his team options. No GasGas TLD(TLD), RMATV KTM(Fly team deal) JT said this was out on a recent Pulp MX show.

Penrite is pending on a legit full season. Specifically with the Aussie series(plural) pulling the plug on the year. Finding the duckits to afford Brayton(sx only) and possibly another 450 rider.

It's not just "another 450 rider" that they are looking at though. They want a top 5 guy and are well along the road of making it happen.

What is the "Star" in Star Yamaha? Is there some product or business called "Star", or is it just the name for the team?

Brayton will go down under to defend his SX Title and then may come back and move to smart top again?
Mookie trying to get a factory ride ? Maybe stay with smartop?
Sexton on Factory Honda
Tomac and Roczen stay put
Any news on Marv ?

I know it's a bit early but the outdoors will be here and done before we know it !
This is all from PulpMX.

Mcelrath-no idea
DF-factory yamaha along with Barcia & AP.
Barcia was close with GasGas but yamaha matched the offer so hes staying yamaha.
Brayton possibly Penrite Honda (same team he rides for in Australia) for some reason not going back Smart Top.
Mookie not staying with Smart Top-not sure what happened.
Marv contract up in 2021 i believe.

Did anyone see MotoX Addicts post on Dungey possibly lining up to race in 2021 on a Honda. Has anyone heard anything on this? Would be for charity races or are they talking RD5 coming out of retirement?

heard this from PulpMX as well.
dude has a lot of inside knowledge. which is usually correct. Also, DM'd Daniel Blair and he confirmed he heard the same thing. wont be on HRC Honda, but will have factory support and outside sponsors.

I'm late to the party I know...but with Brayton not returning to SmartTop (Penrite Honda?) & Mookie not going back either...what's happening on that end? I thought it was one big happy family over there at Tony & Company. Has the money dried up? Are the bikes substandard compared to Honda Factory bikes? Are they even planning on fronting a team for 2021?

Star Chevrolet is the name of Bobby Regans car dealership, so I believe it comes from that.

They had talks with Barcia. There are plenty of good 450 guys who will need rides, I’m sure they will get one.

I guess I'm wondering most of all why Malcolm left...or wasn't interested in staying. He looked great on the Honda, and he was obviously able to keep his Seven/Shoei/Gaerne gear deals with no issues. Now that he has stepped away from MCR/SmartTop...and Barcia looks to be staying put at Yamaha, where does that leave him if he is adamant about keeping his brother's Seven brand?
