I got a second amd should have won but I got hung up in turn one and lost some time. My throttle hung crossing the finish line on my CZ and I ran through the crowd. I ran through the plastic flags that marked the track and I balled up 20-30 feet of it around my rear sprocket and was able stall. It it haven’t been for the flagging I was headed the parking lot. It all happened pretty quick.
My parents are the best. One of my best days ever........
Do you remember old Thrasher Land... that place scared the crap out of me for some reason.
My first race attending as spectator was the Scottsdale Supercross out at west world which was JMBs first US SX i believe... all three were so fast, RJ, Stanton and JMB!
First time racing would have been 1974, I think. XR-75 at a local track. Rubber band start!!!!
Foam knee pads and construction boots. Electrical tape stripes on my helmet. Got 5th. Good times!!!

I had talked my Dad into letting me race, the day before. The only thing I knew about Motocross was from the magazines of the day. We were so green that we didn't even know what tie-downs were. We tied my 1978 XR75 down with rope. Ended up having to stop like 4 times on the way to the track, because the bike kept getting loose. True story!
Ended up finishing 2nd place both motos and was hooked from that race on. Every other bike in my class was either an RM80 or a YZ80. I beat all the 2-strokes except for the local hotshoe that was sponsored by one of the big Houston dealers. He beat the rest of us by about a quarter lap in the first moto, but I stuck pretty close to him in the second moto.
After my race, a lot of the other moto Dad's came over and told mine that he had to buy me a "real race bike" because I had a natural talent. I was racing a new YZ80 the next race, two weeks later. lol I think my Dad loved going to the races as much as I did. He didn't ride himself, but he loved watching me ride and race.
I still remember many moments from that day. Especially being on the starting line for the first time and hearing all the other bikes revving up beside me. Also remember almost pulling the holeshot in that first moto, but the other kid got me just at the end, before the course made a sharp right and then around another quick turn and out onto the main track. My XR75 was completely stock except for a big ass Bassani pipe that had a huge muffler pipe that stuck out a lot. I had taken the baffle out of it so the bike was loud as hell and every time you would let off the gas down a straight or whatever, it would backfire a few times. "...a pow, pow, pow..." lol
Racing has been way better since then!
But I must have liked it, because my dad signed me up to the club and I raced the following month in the pee wee class.
But I remember the first professional race really well, I went to the Supercross Masters at the Melbourne tennis center. It must have been about 1990 and I was about 6.
Honestly I had no idea what was going on with heats, mains and different classes and etc, (my old dad probably didn’t either) but I was bloody hooked. The sound, the smell and I was just amazed by the size of the triple.
I also remember my first road race, I begged my parents to go to the GP at Phillip island for my 6th birthday.
So we made a weekend out of it, and again I was amazed by it all, I still remember crying when Kevin Schwantz passed Wayne Gardner for the lead 😆.
But Gardner got him back and won his home country GP, and being the 90s the crowd swamped the track whilst he did his victory lap, my sister held my hand and ran on to the track with me.
Still a very cherished family memory for me.
30 odd years later, but thanks mum and dad!
Attended as a spectator through the 70’s and 80’s many many local events
My first race as a rider was in Milton, Fla. in 1990. Me and two friends had 87, 88, 89 CR125’s. We finished 5,6,7 in 125 Nervice class. I had the middle year bike and finished in the middle spot.
Attended the 1990 Houston SX and only missed 3 of them over the next 27 years. Many Atlanta’s, couple Tampa’s, Orlando’s and Dallas’s. Hit 7 or 8 different Nationals as well. Good times! Will be 52 this year with intent of stopping riding nor spectating.
Pit Row
I didn't get to race anymore till I was 16, and started sneaking off to the races on my own. I bought a new 81 RM125 at the end of 80. Still one of my favorites. I raced other places of course, but most of mine were at Possum, or the Fairgrounds in Springfield.
Dadofagun, I'm sure we were there a lot at the same time. I switched to Honda 250's and worked my way up to racing the Expert class, I was almost always 3rd-5th place. Got terrible starts!
I'm sure you remember Bill Fullerton and that group.
I always loved watching when Niday would show up and He and Burke would battle. Good times!
My first race was at Argyll Park in Dixon, CA sometime in early 1979. The track was hard pack and they watered the crap out of it and it was slicker than snake shit. I had never ridden anything that was watered that much before and had a hell of a time keeping it up on 2 wheels in my first moto. Despite all the crashes, I managed to avoid finishing dead last.
but did not line up behind a gate until 1985 at Carlsbad Raceway at 23. Been hooked since.
Amelia Earhart Park, Hialeah, FL (Miami) (Southernmost National ever was held here)
Was my brother racing a hare scrambles
My first race was in 1977 at Ridgehill MX Park in Clewiston, FL
I fell in every turn
but did not line up behind a gate until 1985 at Carlsbad Raceway at 23. Been hooked since.
Me and 3 of my friends hopped in my moms blazer and pulled a 3 rail down to Kentucky from MI. I raced the C class, finished 3rd overall in some epic mud conditions. Side note: We had used my moms credit card to reserve our room at the Budget Host. A month later, the Budget Host charged my mom $300 because they said we trashed the room with mud. Mom was pissed.
That was the only time I’ve regional qualified for Loretta’s and I didn’t even know it until about a 5 years later.
