Best passer of all-time

Mike Alessi. He passes the entire field down the start straight, then passes them again going the opposite direction for the remainder of the race.

Stewart hands down. He made brilliant passes on the best riders in the world look effortless. One that comes to mind is San Diego in 2006. 20th to 3rd in three laps of his heat race. He also made a magnificent pass on RC for the main this race. Basically steered with the rear wheel before tripling into that horseshoe section on the inside. RC never saw it coming. Mike LaRocco has to be included in this conversation. He was a horrible starter and won his fair share of races.

Goes to the most talented riders. JS, RV, RC and tomac in that order.

Man, James on that KX125 vs 250f’s has to be the most unreal time in Moto. We’ll almost certainly never see anything like that again. wish I’d have went to bed earlier when I was at Redbud those years so I could have woke up early enough to watch him live.

Maybe Ken Roczen? The way he blows by people on the first lap outdoors and even in supercross. Magoo was pretty good but he was crashing then passing. Maybe Larocco when he was getting terrible starts outdoors and then blitzing the field. Tomac on a charge? Bubba? Hannah? Herlings? You need to have some bad starts to be the man at passing. Smile

I agree with everything but have to add James Stewart. Ryan Dungey last lap pass on Cole Sealey

Just watched 2014 MXofN of Amazon. Tomac’s ride in moto 3 was unreal, fell in the first corner and got up to 3rd with about 8 minutes to go. Probably would have won that Moto outright if he didn’t stall with 3 laps to go. Tomac isn’t Herlings in the sand but he is still an absolute animal!

Mike LaRocco. Worst starts of any rider and most podiums.

Stewart undoubtedly in Mx and Sx.
But ... some guys here mention only one race ...
That being the case, Herlings Mxon 2012, Ironman 2017!

My answer is absolutely Stew.

Herlings has made some beautiful charges through the field as well. Coop might be the most talented passer out there right now, just in terms of his racecraft and intelligence, but I think he needs a little more speed.

Not sure if he's the best statistically but my favorite was Joe Montana.

Stewart. Hands down. End of story.

I've got passes that I remember in my head, but can't remember the year or city. It took me a while to locate it, but I found one of those memorable passes. It was St. Louis 2009, and he put a brilliant pass on Reed for the lead. Just jump to 28:30 to see it set up and executed.

Here is another little bonus pass video:

Jeez, look at how different tracks were back in a day. I know Pastrana`s track was one of the kind, but still.

Didnt they say something about the Ron Lechien (Dogger) that he would have won more races if someone would have punched him in the face and knocked him off of his bike at the starting line. haha

I always giggled at that.

You guys are nuts. Ricky Johnson passed more guys at one Supercross race than all the guys you mentioned above put together. If there's a start for "dudes who had the worst average starting position but won the most races anyway," RJ would own that record.

He just raced the track and let it happen.
Yeah JMB easily the craftiest passer ever. And just riding the track, always made the track smaller. Taking inside lines around the track. If the track is 1.3 miles long, his lines are 1.1, he would still win by going slower even. On a 500 at Millville he Looked like he was a street bike on a interstate, in the whoops. Super fast and smooth,

go watch the 2003 sx season..

Bubba passing through the field on a 125. terrible starts and would just pass through the pack like he was a god.

RC4 and CR22 battle throughout the whole series and are lapping the entire field all year. both have there shocking starts or dramas and still finish 1st or 2nd.

Not even close. James Stewart was in a league all his own. No one could pass better or come through the pack better.

Not to downplay Stew's passing ability, but I only counted 3 guys passed in the whoops. Still awesome, but not 10. Unless that's the wrong moto.
He went from 9th to 2nd in the 2nd moto.

He’s hands down the greatest passer of all time. And greatest rider of all time. The real ones know.

Funny, I couldn’t find how they were measuring greatness. Let’s not hi-jack this thread though.

Bubba is GOAT period.

Lol. Okay. Keep telling yourself that. Record books disagree.
