Was wondering that myself and my guess that’s it a combo of the mechanics / other riders (waiting for next heat) often watch it to better see what‘s going on, but probably main reason is for optics on TV... A giant black screen just makes the stadium look that much more “dead” and they’re trying to liven it up as much as possible. Did you notice they’re also pumping music through the stadium at the starts?

Does Sherwin Williams cut Ralph a check for every mention of a color on the broadcast? He took about 30 seconds to find the right shade to describe Bailey's gear, landing on aqua. Personally, I'd say teal.
