That’s pretty good. I try to get 250km in once the roads and trails are good and clear.

Man I've never owned a Road Bike, but at age 50 I'm starting to get interested.. I MtB quite a bit.

What would be a good starter bike?

Search the used market if you are giving it a try. There are a ton of deals where people buy and just don't ride, or others that upgrade when they get hooked. I would try to stay Shimano 105 or higher group set. I think SRAM's version is the Rival? Other than that it's whatever your flavor. Price wise AL frame is usually cheaper than carbon. Proper fit is key. But if you are used to MTB you prob know bike basics.

Like MX bikes though you could ask 7 guys and they might prefer 7 different brands.

In honor of the MTB thread which is drool worthy. Anyone have a sweet road bike to show off. I always enjoy seeing what others have...

Did any of you guys get any of the FMF cycling kit??

I really wanted some as there would be nothing like it here in the uk. But shopping for it from the uk is a ball 😖

Bought a used Specialized Allez for $200. It’s not expensive but gets the job done! Just did a little 25 mile ride today.

Frame is a Carver custom ti with coupling and budget build for travel

At the end of spring snow plowing progress in the North Cascades National Park in 2018. DeSalvo custom ti frame (I like ti..) Recently changed over to 1X on this one.

Nice! I am currently in Mike's queue and plan to have him build me an all-road(ish) frame out of Ti. It won't be a full-on gravel bike, but not a full-on road race bike either. Longer stays, slacker geometry than a road frame, but clearance up to maybe 38C. Still thrashing this about, I'm still about 2 months away from being in the jig. Gives me more time to agonize over raw Ti versus painted, etc, etc.

I'll add some pics to this thread later tonight. I'm still a working man, cancer does not take a time out during a pandemic.

It's funny I have essentially zero interest in road biking but think the bikes look so sick haha
I've spent my imaginary dollars about 10 times in this thread alone

Do any of you race crits?
I’ve done a handful.

Very intense, can get sketchy, lots of race tactics and strategy involved. It’s been really fun and challenging learning about the drafting, breaking away, sprinting etc. involved in various forms of road racing.

Have you done any road or MTB races yet?

You'll love it! Mike is great to work with and his craftsmanship is top-notch.

You might enjoy playing with bikecad.ca before your build starts. I found it helpful to narrow down what it was I was trying to accomplish. Sent Mike the geo, and then in a discussion about use, he made a few minor changes (+5 mm to chainstays, and dropped the BB a touch) and that was it. Painted vs bare ti is a tough one. I like the look of ti, and then I see the painted ones on his IG and find myself lusting after another frame.

the thread title was 'roadies' not 'paved roadies'.

Where was the second pic from? (looks like CO)

Here is some western WA gravel https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd9Bq7bhekO/

And some higher elevation (by PNW standards) stuff https://www.instagram.com/p/BYkF7u5gMt8/

Ive done, like 15-20 crits. Three of which were on an open road, so a bit more 'road race' than a closed circuit crit.

I upgraded to 3rd cat after a 2nd and a win. The next category has been a big jump and so far Ive only scored 3 points, with a 7th in one bunch sprint.

My recent youtube viewing is all trainload's race analysis videos- I can't get enough of em! I also cannot wait to get racing again. I managed to get one race in at the olympic park circuit in London (check it out on youtube) this year, late february. Super super windy, sketchy bunch sprint, I backed off, got a 20th or something irrelevant.

I do fancy a bit of MTB XC racing actually- I do the odd CX race in winter and love it, but I get murdered in those races! In one race last year, there was a former world youth CX champion in my race- I think it might have been Tom Pidcock.

Moots Compact SL w/ Dura-Ace 9100. One of the last all 6/4 Ti frames Moots built, circa 2006. Recently rebuilt with all new everything but the frame.

A custom steel Hampsten, with a mishmash of Dura-Ace 10/11 spd parts and TRP long reach brakes. This was my old winter bike with room for fenders, now I run it with 28-32C tires and no fenders.

Custom steel Breadwinner B-Road with Dura-Ace 9120 hydraulic. This is the ultimate do it all bike, I ride it in winter with 30C and fenders, or in the summer with 40C for road/gravel.

Better without fenders 😎

Not so much into carbon bikes anymore. I raced for 17 years, last 10 in cat 1 even in my early 40s. I’m 51 now, I still ride a ton but just for fun only.

A couple a long time ago, enough to tell me they're not for me. Or I'm not for them. When I raced, a flat to rolling road race in bad weather fit my strengths a lot better. Now it's gravel events, fondo's, and endurance MTB (supposed to be Breck Epic and High Cascades 100 this year, if they go on). Just did a team time trial in Zwift last week that was surprisingly fun, so doing it again tomorrow.
