I know there’s a lot of threads on this topic, but what the hell right? I’m getting back into motocross after a 12 year hiatus. I previously rode/raced for 12 years from 85s to 250Fs and ended as a fast novice in SoCal. I had a good amount of experience on 450s when I raced at 155lbs and rode a handful of times on a RMZ450 the past few years. I’ve decided I’m ditching the Harley and getting back to riding motocross. Really undecided on getting a 250 or 450 though. I’m 190lbs now and feel the 250 will become underpowered for me quick. I didn’t ride for 8 years and jumped on the RMZ450 and got comfortable pretty quickly the first day. On the other hand, I’m thinking about the 250 to really get my riding skills back with turning, riding aggressive, and using more of the bikes “potential” instead of lugging around the 450.
I know there will be comments on “get a 350” but I’ve decided it’s either going to be a 2020 KX250 or KX450. After watching all the reviews it looks like my weight won’t be a problem for the KX250 suspension and everyone liked the 450s smooth power. Plus, I can get the 250 for $5,500 or 450 for $7,000 brand new. Sounds a lot better then $9,800 for the 350 when I’m just getting started again.
I’ve always had good throttle control so part of me is saying just get the 450 that way I have a bike I can grow into and the other part is saying just get the 250 and ring it’s neck for the first couple of years. I like how I could put the black coupler in the 450 as well to make it more 350ish power with the ability to put the green coupler back in to wake it back up. 250 would cost a pretty penny in aftermarket parts to make it faster.

You'll be able to wring its neck whenever you'd like, carry speed and momentum around the track. Its light nible and agile.
Also, the aftermarket hop up potential is there if you want it and $350 for a full exhaust. A port & polish job will be under $500 and if you ever blow it sky high, it wont cost you half the value of the a current 250f to rebuild.
The 250 smoker will only let you go as fast as your talent will let you go.
I know you didn't even mention it in your original post just above this but it's something to consider. Also, with the KTM and Husky, you can get a 300cc kit should you want more oomph.
Unless this is the last bike you'll ever buy, you really can't go wrong with either choice. In 1998, I came back to moto after a 8 year break and got a 125 to race in the vet class. While it was hard, it really helped my riding and when I did get a 250 2 stroke towards the end of 1998, I was instantly faster than almost everyone in my class because I had trained on the 125 for 6 months.
Edit: if your comfortable on the 450 get one.

With everything going on if I can get a new bike and maybe a new truck for cheap or 0% APR maybe there will be a silver lining to this nonsense after all! 😏
