the 350 is what I like to call a 4 stroke-2 stroke. You can wring it out forever.

I have a 250sx 2 stroke and it and the 350 are very similar in riding style, the 350 is a tad easier to lug in my opinion but both turn and fly very well.

Also have a 450 and between 350 and 450 I prefer 350 as I’m way more comfy in the top ends of the rpm range and you can still lug it down low. Granted it doesn’t have the low end torqu me if the 450 but it’s no slouch either.

Also, get the 350, buy a 2017 air boot, a fmf muffler and send your stock ecu to twisted development for a reflash and I guarantee you dint regret buying that bike.

FC350 vote here (or even 350SXF...)

Reasoning behind it: Sounds like we're very similar in pace and size (I'm +/-200lbs at 6' and slow 30A). Recently had a chance to help "break in" a 2020 350SXF after the owner heard through MXA that they work best with 6+ hours on them, and I had an absolute blast on it!

Currently riding a CR125 for fun and a trusty 2008 CRF450 with older A-Kit for Glen Helen days and Mammoth. Compared to my personal 450 tracked with LitPro, I averaged one second faster per lap on it at Cahuilla Creek MX (faster, outdoor track at elevation). Even more surprising: at a rougher Glen Helen Thursday afternoon session, I was consistently 2 seconds per lap faster on it (even with those stock AER's). It was easier to spin more laps, turned incredibly, felt amazingly light, stopped on dime, and ran stronger than expected when revved properly.

I'd highly suggest riding one before spending on a freshie, as you'll know within a few laps if it's the feel you're looking for (and remember fondly from your 250F racing days). To answer your initial questions: Yes, it will be 30+ competitive even at your size. Yes, you ride it like a 125, but one with stupid long gears; I made it a point at GH to ride in only 2nd and 3rd gears, and it handled these practice laps with ease (remember Cairoli's first moto at Glen Helen MXGP in 2010 when his bike was stuck in 3rd?). I'm 2/3/4 on my 450 and typically 2-5 on my 125! Hard to describe, but even at my size I have to show 450's respect. With the 350, I felt more in control and could toss it about more similar to my 125 than my race ready 450.

For mods as others mentioned, I'd go +1 on rear sprocket from stock 2019 setting, open up the airbox, throw a 2T filter cage in it, get the suspension dialed for you, and possibly have it mapped/throw a pipe on it if you still want more. Luckily, if you happen to be dissatisfied, the 350's seem to hold their value quite well and a 450 is always an option at a later date. Keep us updated and best of luck!

450. You shouldn’t have any problems handling it at your size and skill level

Hahaha! It was a joke of course. My dad is 61 and still ripping it up back in Florida! I can only hope to be there one day!

I am a 34 year old Vet rider, and weigh 170 lbs. I ride a 2016 FC350, and it is my preference over the 450. I am less fatigued riding the 350 in the Florida heat and during longer motos, and it better suits my riding style. I have had three open heart surgeries and suffer from severe fibromyalgia, so anything to help with my comfort and less fatigue, I am all about. I have ridden every bike that there is out there, and the FC350 is my top pick. I actually prefer the 2016-2018 ones as well, as they are more plush in the chassis versus the 2018.5-2020.

I do want to share a little about my bike to let you know you can get a 350 to run like a 450 in terms of performance, and also what you can do to aid in the comfort level.

My mods include the Cylinder Works big bore 366 kit, DCR intake cam, TLR ported head, and tuned on T4 fuel through the stock ECU. It made 61.5hp at 13,000 RPM's, and carried that all the way to 16,000 RPM's. Torque is at 27ft-lb's, peaking at 11,000 RPM's. It would make more power on a higher oxygenated fuel, and with more compression, but my goal was to have more usable power across the entire RPM range, (not just on the top end like the 250 & 350 are known for) and also not break the bank every time I wanted to ride/race. To put the power into perspective, a 2020 FC450 makes 51.5 hp at 10,000, and then it is done. Mine made 52hp at 10,000 as well, but kept pulling another 10hp for another 6,000 RPM's. This thing is a rocket.

I also went with the MX-Tech Lucky system with Huck valves inside the AER forks (this system is as light as AER forks and super plush), and I run the Neken SFS air/spring clamp for plushness in the bars and less arm pump.

Hi All!

I know there are some great threads on 350s on the board here, I’ve spent the better part of the last week checking them all out but I still wanted to get some feedback on a couple specific questions.

I have the chance to grab a brand new 2019 350 or 450 and I’m torn on what direction would be best.

I’m a former A/pro am class rider who is just coming back off almost 10 years off the bike. I picked up my dads 2015 fc450 and have put about 25 hours on it. I raced the early crf450s and have always rode a couple of hours here and there on my dad’s 450s so I am super aware of the pros and cons of a 450. I can still make them go really fast for a 36 year old vet rider, but I do have trouble with putting in 20 minute motos on them and I am concerned that I’ll spend the next few months fighting it and not getting enough seat time in to actually enjoy myself and increase my speed consistently.

That said I’m a 200-205 pound, 6 ft tall Vet expert rider and I plan on racing this fall at some OTHG stuff plus some of the bigger vet races.

My questions though - is the 350 enough bike at the Vet Expert level to compete if you are say 200 pounds? I know I’ll have to rev the shit out of it, that’s kinda the appeal for this former two stroke kid, but will I miss my 450 and just be mad I didn’t get one or will I really notice the ability to ride faster for longer like some say about the 350? Will it pull my 200 pound self around fast enough to hang with the 450 guys (besides off the start)?

Any real insight would be greatly appreciated as I’m picking up the new bike next week. Help me out and then I’ll post what I buy and get a bike build thread going.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!
350 will pull you around just fine...

i have a yz270f built by twisted that out holeshots alot of 450's... and im 210lbs

and if you are worried about it. dump race fuel and a ECU on it, and it will rip.

Just when I think I’m getting another KX450 you guys keep making me want to try a FC350! Been riding the 250 two stroke a lot lately and it’s so much fun, I am more used to the momentum and riding it harder... I’m starting to think I want to give the tree fiddy an honest try!

Dude they are killing me. I already have money down holding the 450 till I get to the dealer next week, but these people are making me do flip flops. I’ve literally lost sleep on the decision. Lol.

Right now I’m thinking - buy the 350, keep my 2015 450 for fun and tracks with elevation. Tomorrow that may change.

Good luck on your decision!

If you guys were anywhere near here (Wisconsin), I’d let you ride my 350 just so you’re able to see what you’d like or dislike about them.

I'm in the market for a new bike too and it's so hard to decide what the perfect Vet weapon is. It might be because all the bikes are so good, that you really can't go wrong with whatever you choose.

If you prefer to rev the bike and ride it at high rpm's buy a 350. If you ride a gear higher and lug the bike, buy a 450. It's that simple. I had 2-350's, the last being a 2017 FC and I went back to a 450 because I prefer to lug a bike.

How does the low end lug/torque of your mods compare to a 450 on the dyno? im interested in getting some similar motor work on my 350

Exactly. To try and simplify it as best as you can, this is what it comes down to. I personally do not like to lug and do not like the really torquey feel of a 450, so the 350 is great. Plus I can ride it how I like to ride and not get tired. But that is just me. It really comes down to the individual. There are people who bought the 350 and went back and I know fast guys that went from 450 to 350 and say it is the best thing they have ever done.

I feel the same way. I like to try and ride aggressive and rev the bike. It's what makes riding fun.

Here you go, sir. The first graph is a 2019 FC450. The second graph is my personal bike.

I'm 6'2" and 220lbs, former local pro and just like you got back into it for the vet stuff. I tried the new Hondas, I tried the new Kawi, I settled on the 350 and love it. If you ride it like you stole it I really don't feel like you give anything up to a 450. They're made to be ridden like a 250, which is right up my alley since I've always overrev'd a 450 instead of lugging it.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I went with a 450 today but after all the conversation and great points on the 350, I think I’m going to pick up one this fall after all of this insanity dies down.

I’ll get a bike build thread going soon! Thanks again all!

I’m 5’10” and 210lbs and I love mine..although it is for sale due to finances, otherwise I’d keep it, i am 45yrs old and consider myself an intermediate and I get around on it just fine, it is awesome to catch guys on 450’s going into corners because the engine mass makes it feel much lighter than a 450 even though it’s only 1 or 2lbs lighter...

My vote is for the 350. Last summer I had a ‘17.5 Factory Edition 250, an ‘18 350SXF, and a ‘17.5 Factory Edition 450 (this is apples to apples as far as years go) at the same time. Only the 350 remains of those three. Your ability level is much greater than mine is, so my reasons for preferring the 350 over the others may be different than what your thoughts would be. For me, the 450 felt heavy and I simply couldn’t ride it hard or aggressive. This isn’t me saying I can ride the 350 with a lot of aggression, but I could ride it much harder than the 450 and not get worn out doing so. My recommendation would be to get a 350, a Vortex from Twisted Development and call it a day.
Isn’t the FE package exclusive to 450 only?
