All good... I'm unfamiliar with that name, might have just missed him. I got my first YZ80 in '75 and that's when racing began.

I understand some people above thinking that money spent on a PW50 is wasteful... But even a decent mom and pop racing program will include proper maintenance and race prep on a race bike. We would go through 4 YZ80's a year since we raced and practiced on the same bikes and there were multiple stock and mod classes. I think today the better route is a practice bike and a race bike or bikes. And if planning and prepping for a LL run, a premium built race bike isn't unreasonable, even in the shaft class.

Talent is still king, but practice, training and talent supported with a proper race bike is simply doing your best, no matter who you are. Am I missing something?
I agree 100% with you, I thought you were making fun of the original poster going overboard until I read your followup response.

I have two grandsons slightly younger than yours, If either wants to race, they will be on the best equipment that I can provide..

Concerning money spent on a PW50; it makes more sense to spend money on a PW50 engine than probably any other class. A good PW50 rider at LLs will use all of the power available (as opposed to most amateur 250 / 450 riders.)

Have a good day.

Saw quite a few parents and kids chase this over the years. Both usually end up burned out and broke(n). I thought my kid was gonna be good, but after concussion #2 at 8 YO, and the bruised spleen at 9 we decided that racing wasn't for us. Risk/reward ratio is so skewed in this sport. We ride for fun now, on good equipment, that would never be competitive at any level outside local, but my kid's not competitive either so it works for us.

OP, go for it. But don't force it on him. He either has it, or he doesn't, and it won't come from you if he doesn't. It's more important that when you find he doesn't (and odds are that's where it'll end up eventually) that he still loves you and wants to hang out and ride with his old man.

I love hearing my boy tell me "Dad, I can't wait till it's riding season again".

Oddly enough, I was there that year too with one of the pdub riders. If that’s the kid I’m thinking of from Wyoming (pretty sure it is) he got a horrible start in the third moto and went down on the blind side of the inside single coming out of “storyland”. Flaggers didn’t get the other kids to go outside, causing the kid and his bike to be landed on by about 8 other bikes while the kid from Ohio cruised to an easy win and and the OA.

Not sure why the moto 3 start was bad for him, but I don’t remember any protests that year. Those 2 were just on a different skill level at the time. Thinking back, i haven’t heard either of their names since that day.
Yep, it was and yes that was a bone stock bike for sure. They are out of racing now for a few years and are into hunting/fishing and enjoying the snow in WY. Great family.

i'm having the same issue with my 7 year old. The PW just sits in the garage. my daughter is very interested though. She calls it her bike then my 7 year old get super upset. but she is a small 3 year old but next summer shes getting on it.

Got my kids a PW50 at 5 and they showed little interest.

Got them a CRF 50 at 6 and they seemed to like it better but only when I made them ride so I stopped pushing and they didn't really care.

We bought property and I built a track for them and it was cool for a few weeks then back to Minecraft.

Last spring at 7 they had outgrown the CRF so I got a PW80, Again, it was cool for a few weeks then they lost interest and the bikes and track sat all summer.

This November after they turned 8 my son asked out of the blue if he could ride the dirt bike one weekend and seemed a little more excited than in the past. Between the rains, we'd get out and ride until late December when he said he needed a faster bike.

Santa brought a KX65, and all of a sudden he's all in. Want's to ride every day after school now and thinks he's ready for his first race. For 2 1/2 yrs I been thinking maybe my kids just aren't going to do what I do and it all seems to have changed practically overnight.

You just never know when it's going to click...

As a weekly 85cc moto dad, I do not understand mini dads all juiced up behind a PW50. In a real race, this pile of crap has to somehow navigate a track that’s been best to piss all day, The poor kid has to use horrible body positioning and basically drag a toy around on a mans track, it’s a joke to watch, the bike is a joke, and any trophy or title on this bike means nothing, absolutely nothing. ok, maybe I went too hard, but it’s annoying to witness

I loved my PW50. Rode the hell out of that thing and didn’t care that it was pink. Easily one of the best gifts my dad ever gave me.

Who makes best A-kit suspension for PW50s?
A-kit suspension on a PW???
That's not going to make the slightest of difference...
If you don't have a factory ECU first!!!

I don’t see you complaining when a old vet rider or beginner rider waste $1,000 on a exhaust system that does nothing for them but looks cool.

Oh ya, my pro flo pw50 will be here this week!

Well I bought a used rockstar and it was stock . I sure do like the bark. Yes I ride in 2 gears!

I assume you're parents didn't care enough about you to get you tested, because even they could see you were full tard and had zero hope.

Can anyone help??  Trying to figure out when best to breed the ole lady so kid is born at the perfect time to be huge in his age groups??   Need him to still be AMA-6 when he's like 15.   What's the cutoff date?   Barring that, how long can a chick hold it in and delay labor so we can max out these classes?

O you certainly have to breed. We need more autism in the gene pool for sure.

Home birth, no prenatal care, you decide when to apply for the birth certificate. Could technically be illegal depending on where you're at but what's a small fine in the grand scheme of things?

Reading all this, really takes me back to when I was 7.  The YZinger was a brand new  bike that changed the class forever.  I had spent the prior 2 seasons on Italjets, and this new Yamaha was the going thing.  A local dealer offered to help us, as long as Dad bought all his parts from him.  We got the bikes at shop cost for the year of 1981, and 82.

A new in crate PW was $304.  Found some old cancelled checks in my Dad's desk when he passed, stuff he bought from various places over the years.  He bought quite a few of them in 81, and 82.....  Funny thing though,  the 81 bikes were $304, the 82 bikes were $316.  That was a markup anyone could live with......

Damn those days are long gone.......

Might as well go as fast as ya can!   Dad's spending loads on bling bucks that actually make no difference on their own ride. I go all in.  Boogie baby!   Anyone notice now Chase Cairoli is only on PW50?  No more little Austrian bikes.... weird!

That billet aluminum exhaust joint looks heavy, time for some weight savings!
