Namur 1991 GP

Cool 2 part video of the '91 Namur GP.

That track was sooo sketchy. No way would it pass the health & safety mustard these days.

I added the 2nd part.

These 2001 MXdN videos are cool too.

Never saw a GP there but once went to a stage of the Tour de France that ran through it. My first introduction to Belgian French fries with mayonnaise.

I went in 1985 & 86. Best race track I have ever been too. It was magic.

Legendary track, the step ups look unreal. Track of many challenges - through the trees, the Citadel (?) then up the hill. What more of a challenge could there be????

I went quite a few times, it was like nothing else, really, really special, I loved it... went back a few years ago and walked a lap, not a trace of the history left, it really needs a plaque or monument about the motocross...

1987 for me, have always order mayo with fries from that day on. Rained most of the day cobbles sketchy and the hills.

What years did they have that insane step down ? That seemed like the most dangerous obstacle on the whole track.....

That's pretty much the comparison I've made to people when we talk / write about having an MXGP at Namur again.

Namur as against most modern MX circuits (especially 'pop up' tracks) is pretty much analogous with the TT / Real Roads courses vs Modern Road Race Closed Circuits.

If Eric Geboers - R.I.P.- couldn't get a GP or other type of race back there, it sure as hell won't ever happen again.

Though, I'd dearly love to be wrong on that.

Your's is a hell of an idea, MXMatti! It would be quite the step up from the MEC, in every bloody way.

I count myself so very lucky to have got to see racing at / on The Citadel!

That step down in the forest was crazy, been on top off it and it was super deep and sketchy. You never could see the landing as a rider or where to go, only trees. Next to the track there was a rope you could use for going going down or up the hill, and it was needed because it was so deep.

Been there the last 2 GPs in 06 and 07. The vibe around the track was just something special. Hard to explain in words, you really need to have been there for that.

Crazy times and happy I have seen it in person.

To my eternal shame, i never went ' because the viewing was rubbish'... one of my poorer life decisions, without a doubt. I have been since , and it just compounds my stupidity.

Regarding what you write about Geboers, what is the reason no race at all could be held at Namur?

It was mentioned here many times before in various threads. I try to sum it up. Basically the track is non-existent. It is too costly for TV broadcast (need more camera crew). etc.

Boo hoo *insert generic Luongo's screach* it would not be as profitable as third race in Indonesia so it would put damper on Luongos chance on another Yacht in a foreseeable future...

My 0.02 dough:
The track could not be run as it was in the past but with a few changes regarding rider and spectator safety it should be doable. Just put MXoN there. Make MX punk again.

Also add in the fact that the environmentalists would never allow it.

Just between two of us. Those closeminded twats can suck a fat one... daily.

One weekend of 3*2x practices, 3x Quali races, 1x B-Final and 3x Races, isn't really that big burden regarding CO2, the terrain deformation is there to some degree but not more than it used to be in the past... If their wealthy daddies would spank some reason into them and buy one less private jet that year, then it would balance it self regarding the enviroment damage. But i will not bother with facts and math because those wankers can't even count if you take away their numbing phones...

It is in the french part of Belgium, so that's a plus.
It would cost a lot of money to host a race their. You need a lot of dirt!
But it would be so epic. I was only a kid when i went the last time to the citadel. But ; still the best atmosphere i have ever experienced! Looking back now, it looked like hell of a party.
If only Red bull or Monster would dump some dollars in it for a one off event. A man can only dream!

The reason it stopped is that Eric Geboers got more money from the Flemish government to organize the race in Lommel than that the Wallon region wanted to pay to keep the race in Namur.

Combined with the fact the the organization team was falling apart due to their age and you've got your simple but reasonable explanation. No green people involved in that.

Now rebooting it, seems impossible. It's bit like Monaco, take them two years out of f1 and FIA won't allow them back in either due to safety or other reasons.

But, the classic thing is, you go there today, and much of the track can still be found.

With water erosion from the so concerned Greenies
not being 'concerned enough to plant some grass and do some water diversion work.

Typical.

Best track ever! It was a magical place, went there for several GP's. Would load up the van and a few tents with a few friends and hangout all weekend eating fries and brats and drinking beer and watching motocross. Would never forget the bark off a 500 works bike resonating in the woods.
The huge jump out of the woods on to the asphalt was crazy, then wide open down a dirt road, shielding your face from flying rocks and dirt. Truly epic, will never experience that again.
The 80s and early 90s were the years in motocross.

Thanks but i don't mean hosting a GP.

My question is why isnt there an international race? In the summer (holiday) period with field of riders similar as to what we'll see at Hakwstone or at the Dutch Masters (so like 50% of the GP topriders).
