I have had 2 of these motors, and have put thousands of hours on them both.. I just don't know how anyone could inflict that much damage to one.

Well hopefully you didnt pay any more than $2500. Replica or not its a used cr250.

That sucks though. I usually expect that kind of poor work when i buy a used bike, but this is certainly over top. On the plus side, it will be a nice replica once repaired.

I've been building my stable since the beginning of the year. I bought a 1983 YZ125K that was on "display" in the dealer showroom for 8 years. I was told it was rebuilt as a "racer" but has been sitting... I'll stop there with that one...

I now have 6 others for a total of 3 '83 YZ125's, '80 YZ125, ''81 YZ125, '82 YZ125, '83 YZ100

I have had a similar experience with being let down, but mine haven't been to the magnitude of what you received. It is always a crap shoot on these old bikes and as I've said, I've been quite disappointed on 4 or the 7 bikes I've bought so far, mildly disappointed in 1 and been "OK" with the other two.

When I start to thin the "extra" '83 YZ125's, I'll be 100% honest in what needs to be done when I sell them. I don't believe in "paying it forward" on misrepresenting bikes.

Like you, in each case, I failed to ask some very specific questions. Learning lesson for sure on my part... I kinda expect when I ask, "what needs to be done to the bike to make it race ready", I have learned not to always believe the "it's good to go" response. I need to ask specific questions and ask for proof of "rebuilds"...

In my case, each bike was very remote and I had to have them shipped in. I was like a kid at Christmas each time one arrived - sometimes I was let down, other times I was pleasantly surprised. My '82 YZ125 has been my biggest "win" so far! A true time capsule bike that I was fortunate to find.

I've put a little work into each bike so far, but haven't fully completed one yet. I'll be busy this winter as my new work shed gets delivered and I can really dive in to each one... A few pics of their respective current state...

Nope. Came from out of the country. I bought it so my buddy/rider could race it two weekends ago. Didn’t work out.

As far as outing the seller, kind of pointless at this stage. He knows. And he’s a respected dude, from what I can tell.

Don’t let this sour your passion for old bikes, Chalk it up to lesson learned. If I feel the need to make a sight unseen purchase I use PayPal goods & services, that will give you a higher level of protection. I say “out” the seller so other members can avoid. It does not matter how wealthy someone is, getting ripped off never feels good.....

all the more reason to blast him. look at the other bikes/shop in the pictures, this guy knows what he had and what he did, and if he didnt give you damn near all your $$$ back you are being to kind.

Name and shame. Jesus that is a mess.

However, i will say that there is a world of difference in expectation between 'show bike' and 'showbike' .... we used to build show cars at the end of each season, out of all the bits we had left, empty gearboxes, or even no drive train, and F1 stuff built out of travel parts , with paint job, and new stickers.

However,my expectation of a bike at that price would be that you should struggle to find anything to spend money on if you intend to ride it.

I see Honda GDR Racing had this same bike for sale back in August, September (see their twitter page) showing the same pictures as used at the start of this thread. Even Steve Matthes' linking the GDR bike sale on his twitter page.
