I was at LaRoccos leap when he went passed on the back of the utv. He waved his hand so I know he was conscious but that’s all I have.

I believe someone was down in the corner after that jump (couldn’t see over the berm) and The Red Cross flag had been out forever and guys were still doubling (he was trying to get them to go to the outside and stop doubling so he was standing in the middle of the track) even after the he got hit guys were still doing it. No idea what the malfunction was but that shouldnt have happened.

wheels on the ground flag was definitely out for a while. he got smacked and was out cold. I was right there the whole time. we were all gettin super pissed that the guys were jumping, especially anderson sending the whole thing with a scrub. Finally stopped the practice, should've been redflagged immediately. Shout out to the Alpinestars and track medical crews getting there, I was about to jump the fence give him some attention before a medic came crawling up the hill. Had 3 doctors there with him in minutes. Knocked his shoe clear to the bottom of the landing.

Lots of threads about docking points and time for unsafe re-entry of the track during a race. Does anything come from jumping when “wheels on the ground” flag is out during qualifing and/or practice? Seems a lot of guys disregarded this on Saturday and it should be brought to their attention?

I think it's science that whenever there is an accident involving a motorcycle a shoe must go flying. Really though, hope he's ok.

Wasn't Anderson the one who got hurt at Glen Helen because He continued to go WFO when they were rerouting the track for a downed rider?

Best wish's to the track worker on a full and speedy recovery.

DAMN. Flaggers there to promote safety and enforce track rules and guys are still jumping the jump with him out cold. They should have stopped the practice or waved the riders around the entire jump. That's scary.

Didn't they dock him anyway? I thought I heard something about him getting 15th gate pick even though he had the fastest lap.

it would suck to be doing hot lap, and then come across that. But still, rules are rules

Where the hell is Davey Coombs in all of this and why the fuck was Anderson allowed to continue to compete? What a thoroughly ignorant twat he is. Why is it that THE premier national motocross championship in the world allows this type of BS - riders ignoring waved flags - to continue with little or no punishment being metered? I have yet to come across another major motorcycle championship hosted in other countries that allow such blatant disregard for safety to competitors and trackside marshals/waved flags that occurs in AMA Pro Motocross.

Is that Anderson flying by at :06? If the flagger was down he may not have known? The medical crew was surprised by it.

I don’t think there was a flagger on the lip with a flag when Jason went by. Looks like the flagger that was there ran over to the other downed track official and rider and that jump has a blind landing.

Here’s where the flagger was prior to the track official getting hit. Good spot easy to see.

Looking from the other direction, you can see there are 3 workers on that jump. Red shirt with the flag, blue shirt by Savatgy and orange shirt guy near flagger.

Then the Honda rider hits the track official in the blue shirt when he was presumably walking across the track. The flagger then leaves his spot on the lip and runs over to the downed official. Then the orange shirt guy also comes over. So at this point, both the flagger and orange shirt guy are away from the lip (in the blind section of the jump) and as shown in the fan recorded video posted above, Jason goes flying by.

Here’s moments before Jason goes by. No one is waving a flag at the lip of the jump anymore and this is before the session was Red flagged completely. You can see the blue shirt official from earlier now knocked out, the red shirt flagger over him and the orange shirt guy also coming over (later seen helping with the bike in the fan video)

So it looks like the blue shirt guy was somehow hit by the Honda rider while walking on the track and then the flagger that was covering that jump leaves his spot to go help, not realizing people can’t see him until they are too close. Ultimately, it’s the flagger's fault (in my opinion) that Jason flew over their heads on that jump. The flagger should have stayed at the lip of the jump or had the guy in the KTM shirt come over to the lip of the jump to alert the riders not to jump.

EDIT:
I can't tell for sure how Tomita and the track official got together since there is no real coverage of that incident, so I shouldn't speculate.

The 1st thing they told us in the flagger meeting for SX was never put yourself in danger.

I hope everyone is OK.

I would say your assement is very close to accurate. The only thing I would add (I was a at the track watching this mess) I don’t think the track worker that got hit was just walking around. The flag was out for a long period of time with guys still doubling the jump. Not just Anderson. While the flag was out he was standing both hands waving in the middle of the track trying to get guys over to the right of the face of the jump because guys were jumping into a downed rider on the left side of the landing coming into the next corner. I’m not sure this is what he should have been doing but I’d say he was doing what he thought was best as the rider down on the landing was in a lot of danger himself as guys wouldn’t stop doing the damn jump. If it wasn’t him who got hit it was going to be the rider on the otherside.

I still haven’t figured out who was down in the corner by the landing. The berm from where I was covered up that part of the incident.

Maybe the guys that wear neck braces cant/dont look up that high? Youre motoring pretty good out of that corner, and your not thinking of looking for a flag. tabletop is not a likely place for a guy to crash in a pro practice.

As a racer, you are required to be aware of the flags at all times. As for Anderson, he had his fast lap taken away. Boo fricken hoo...the penalty for that sort of incident should be a immediate disqualification, with no possibility of appeal

I'm understanding of the Anderson situation due to the flagger moving. I'm not okay with a track worker feeling the need to put himself in harm's way due to riders not adhering to the wheels on the ground flag. And then to see him laid out, jeez. Something better be done to ensure riders choose differently next time.

The flagger should have moved downstream initially to provide sooner visibility of the flag.

That's how I always did it anyway.
If I was at the finish line jump (where I usually was) and a bad crash happened, I'd run down the jump to the bottom where they HAD to "see me first".

Sounds like the worker is lucky to be alive.

Just curious. If there were wheels on the ground flags and for some reason you have ignorant people ignoring those flags and god forbid killed a man trying to do his job, would the rider be arrested and charged with negligent manslaughter?

I thought Anderson said something happened in practice that docked him or something, and thus he only qualified in 13th position which gave him a bad gate pick. Was that something else or did he actually get docked something for this issue?

Yes, he got docked for jumping on the red cross flag in qualifying.

There should be both yellow flag and redwhite flag at same time. Just showing permanent redwhite flag is not visible enough when you coming hill that deep. Guy with blue shirt never should have crossed track if he wasnt sure. No one will jump if they see there is problem ahead I can see why Anderson got confused if flagger went to help and didnt put flag clearly out. This is why we need 2 flaggers on highest level of racing. Good that guy is OK.

You have any idea how tall and long that take off is? Bottom of the jump starts right at the corner and from there to the lip is about 200 feet away and 50-60 feet elevation change.

GL mentioned in the first moto that Anderson got 13th gate pick for jumping on red cross during qualifying

I was unfortunately not at RedBud, though I don't know that I could have done anything differently than what our officials did. Like most of you, I only saw it on NBC Sports Gold. But MX Sports Pro Racing and our series officials we have been working to sort through what happened ever since Saturday morning, reviewing the video and eyewitness accounts. The home video of Anderson jumping was not available to us until after the race, and we have been discussing the whole chain of events with the multiple trained flaggers that were on the spot and waving their flags how both Tomita and Anderson would have failed to see them. Jason Farrentz (the official who was hit and is thankfully just a little banged up) and Jarry Newby (longtime infield manager) and Tim McAdams (longtime technical referee) were all on site and trying to manage the situation along with other course flaggers when Anderson jumped the whole scene. We will be speaking with Jason and his team and I imagine additional penalties will be issued for both riders involved. We do not "allow this type of BS with little or no punishment" and we will also continue working to make sure it does not happen again.
