I remember Seattle SX one year, I see him in the Pits basically wearing Pajamas and slippers and overheard that he showed up to race without his gear bag.

Good, at least someone can validate my story. I remember him battling with Damien riding a Honda 450, and Jason on his supermini I admit remembering what classes are a bit foggy. All we need is for Plotts to join in on this thread to keep me honest.

I wasn't being rude by any means. I raced Jlaw a lot at that time in supermini and 85 14-15s, I had just never heard of them splitting with big bikes.

No, it's all good! I was racing one of the big bike squid classes, so I remember watching it all go down in awe.
It reminds me though of a time when he took his supermini out in the A practice and was purposely screwing with the local A guy who was on a 250 2 stroke. The guy was pretty fast and has qualified for nationals. Jlaw was getting in front of the guy and flipping him off in the air. Cutting DEEP in the insides of the corners. I'm not sure if there was a backstory to it but he was definitely try to screw with the guy which seemed like for no apparent reason.

I raced supermini with him 15 years ago quite often. And supermini was always grouped with Jr mini. I can't see them grouping a big bike class and supermini together. I even raced raceway park often.
More than a few times on superminis at redbud they ran a dual gate with a big bike class. It happens quite often here

Ive seen it Happen in Minnesota where they dropped a 40+ class
And Right behind it an 80cc class in the 90's and there was a fast Girl on a YZ80
That passed all the 40+ guys i would think there may be some embarrassment
But she was real fast and her parents owned the track.
okay...who are you?

2007 amateur day dilla - Just finished my last moto of the day on the amateur track. Sitting in the front seat of my truck having a safety meeting contemplating my motos. I see jlaw ripping down the pit road towards my pit area on the YOT golf cart so I roll the window down and gesture him... he slams the brakes big ass smile and says he is going to come right back. I wait around a bit before saying F it and take off. Get back to my pit later in the evening and the people parked next to me are all like “hey dude J law was by here looking around for you I think”. Shoulda never left! Jlaw was our generations Ron Lechien. Total bad ass

Seems like him and Swap were buddies when JLaw was still racing, so that would be one of my guesses... but it would be WAY more interesting to hear an interview between JLaw and Denny Stephenson (or someone else with very little/no filter).

What happened in 2013 when he wanted to make a comeback for the nationals?

Sad part of it all is that there had to have been those who sacrificed a lot along the way to help him get to where he was in the sport. He shit on a lot of people. Prove me wrong.

Newmann is correct.

JLaw was a wannabe Hannah. The Hurricane was the original bad boy of American MX scene, but he was also a multi time champ in the process.

JLaw was AOK in my book, was no worse than some of crazy guys from the 70s & 80s, only difference was social media and the semi instant broadcast of the shenanigans. Funny how the rose coloured glasses come out from some people that were there back in the day or conveniently forget how deviant some people were back then. It would be great if another guy came along and brought some personality to this dry ass era.

There's a dirt track for late models etc just beyond the track on the side of henry hill and the big gulp. They used to build a supercross track for amateurs on the infield the saturday night before the race when they raced nationals on sunday.

Yup, I believe he pulled off from the main because he was tripping out.

There’s also the one where he ran into a team’s rig and stole a radiator for someone else.

When he was too sick to ride GH 450 opener the one year and he was actually just hanging out o the hill side drinking beer, smoking weed, and ran onto the track at one point to cheer Josh Hill on.

One of his mechanics has some pretty good stories about how many races they knew he flew to but then couldn’t find him come Race day.

Ohh and when he flipped the rental car the deposit for it got yanked out of his mechanic’s account because it was under his name.
Heard that one right from said mechanics mouth one day back in 09-10 time frame when he was then wrenching for cunningham. The car was in mechanics name because J-Law had a DUI or something already if I remember correctly. The rental agency hit his credit card with the bill for the car, and nor J-law or the team would put up any cash to help cover it. I think he had just paid it off recently at that time he said.

Not to get too far off subject, but it was always more fun in my opinion for the fan when the races were sundays. I know at Budds there was a lot for the amateurs to do. If you signed up to race the supercross saturday night, you could get two rounds of open practice saturday morning for free before the pros went out for their qualifying.

Jlaw?

There was this one time when Jlaw had the sport in the palm of his hand..... Now, not so much!

Any semi normal individual would be full of remorse having not gone on to achieve anywhere near their full potential.

Hope he's happy with the life he chose, at least injuries were not a problem for him like most riders.

I feel bad for all the companies/teams/managers that spent thousands of dollars and thousands of man hours trying to get this guy to the races and good equipment over his career...and he pissed it away. Not to mention the guys that could have had those opportunities and wouldn't have wasted the opportunity.

Who forced them to hire him? They knew exactly what they were getting and the uphill climb they'd have trying to manage him. I didnt see Roger or Mitch pushing to get him on their teams.

Cole Gress told a handful of stories on a podcast with Matthes, but one that sticks out is him at a track where he was on top of a hill and there were some tractor tires lying around. He grabs one and just lets it go down the hill and either could have hit some kids or it narrowly missed them...and he goes off laughing like a maniac.

What a polarizing guy in the sport. There are (and were) thousands of kids that are hellions just like him all over the country.. they just rarely ascend to the top of any sport they participate in. Does anyone know the backstory of his upbringing? Where were his parents during all of this? Either way, I love reading the stories and lore of his time in the sport.

Hannah never lost sight of the goal. I think he might have had a different sense of commitment too. He signed on the dotted line to win titles not fuck around. Lawrence seemed to want to take the money and not produce.
As far as guidance, he wasn't going to listen to anyone. He was the smartest guy in the room everywhere he went.
