If there's anything worth complaining about in this article, it's the fact that he didn't say a peep about all the other dudes who jumped in the red flag section.

So we went to the autograph signing in Indy the day before the races. Austin Forkner, Martin Davalos, Joey Savatgy and Eli Tomac was all sitting in a row. I said to Austin "Hell of a season you have going, keep it up" I said to Joey "Nice rookie season, keep up the good work and hopefully get another finish like MEC. I asked Eli "To take it easy on my boy tonight"...... He said You must be talking about the #2 because you said boy. hehe. (I was actually talking about the 94) Then I said to Martin " When you moving up to the bigboy class and the all laughed, Eli, Austin and Joey. I believe they think its time to move up too.

I dont like the current system at all, not one little bit. I will also never tell another man how to make a living and support himself. Dont hate on Shane, he needs to get paid, period, his employer is willing to pay him to sit, and also pay him again next year after a lackluster season, then good for him. Dont hate the player, hate the game.

People don't seem to want to step out of their perspective bubbles and look at the bigger picture. The media needs something to talk about, and reporters have their pet peeves. Just like there's nothing wrong with what Marty is doing, there's nothing wrong with Matthes having an opinion about it and expressing it as a member of the media trying to draw and entertain an audience. How about we all just chill on calling each other cry babies for not thinking the exact same thing.
Please do tell me where i was pointing a finger at Matthes or calling anyone anything? I actually enjoy his insight and perspective into the sport as i feel we have way more "insider info" than we did say 10-15 years ago.....

Matthes is actually a really great journalist. He’s also a phenominal interviewer. For me....he changed the game for motocross journalism. I hope he stays with the sport for life!

He nailed exactly how the night went and how "real whoops matter"...I'm not sure I'm with him on Shane's intent; but, I get Steve's point. Seattle was the best SX track that I've seen in a long, long time.

I don't blame Shane, either. Lets be honest, though. If no one will give you a 450 ride after 6 years in 250, a 7th year probably won't make much difference. Younger riders getting good results are going to look better to the factories when they are deciding who to bring up.

The problem is the best riders move up into 450 and are replaced with younger, less experienced riders. There is only so much you can learn by racing against riders less experienced than you. You're going to peak after a few years. After that, the only way to learn more is to ride against more talented riders. That means stepping up to the 450s, which is where the best riders are.

I know everyone on a factory 250 thinks they are good enough for a factory 450 ride, and that they aren't moving up until they get one. That means that 24 riders think they are good enough for the 1 or 2 factory rides that become available. It's never going to happen for most of them. If you look at who traditionally wins titles in 450s, it's rider who won titles in the first 2-3 years of the 250 class. If you've already been in 250s for 5 years, 450 teams are already looking past you to keep an eye on the younger riders. Why? They're the ones who are more likely to bring a team a 450 championship and race wins.

Of course there are always exceptions.

If it was truly 2 separate classes and you had to point out to ride 450's then you shouldn't be able to ride 450's and then drop back down. That they can bounce back and forth until they "point out" seems stupid and it should either be fully open for anyone in both classes or make them separate and no going back and forth.

I don't agree with the 250 being a learning class. At this point it's almost a works class since privateers have 0 chance against a factory bike where in the 450's it's more level between stock and factory bikes power wise.

I say leave it open and let them race either of them.

Who gives a shit if people stay in the 250's.

It's not like they're dominating year after year. Dudes can't win a 250 championship.

Two pro classes never means the two classes have equal prestige. One class will always be more prestigious. F1 has many professional series underneath it. Nascar has multiple professional feeder series. Minor League Baseball is professional, but sits beneath the majors. You can't have two premier classes.

250 will always be professional, but it is a lower prestige series than 450. That isn't going to change. It is the step between 125s and 450s. 450 champs are typically 250 champs. With a few exceptions, 450 riders who win more than 5 races are also 250 champs. By my quick survey, only [s]Tomac[/s], Bayle and Emig have won more than 5 450/250t mains without winning a 250/125t champ. Obviously excluding riders who turned pro before Lites were a thing.

That's the reality. 250 is where you learn. If you didn't manage to win a title in 250, you're probably not going to make waves in 450.

Look at the most recent 450 champs. Dungey, Villapoto, Reed, Stewart, Charmichael all won 250/125t in third first or second year. McGrath in his third, and Anderson in his fourth. Pretty telling.
Tomac won the 250 West in 2012

I don't see how riders not moving up is hurting the sport. There are already solid riders in 450s without factory rides. Just let the riders decide what they want to do. It's their career, let them choose. Age, physical size, career goals, desires, riding style, are all factors that could influence a rider one way or the other. If at some point in the future there is a lack of talent in the 450s then re-address the issue, but for now I'd just make it two professional classes and let the riders pick.

Do you mean, literally, 2 professional classes or what we have now which is 3 professional classes and two of them are only 50% represented? Talking SX only. Outdoors has it figured out.

I’d leave it the way it is with two 250 series. That helps people get into the sport by having a shorter series with less travel demands. It also creates a difference in prestige, and likely money to naturally incentivize the top riders to move up.

I wonder if it could work if there were two 250 classes?

1 class could be for the new riders coming into the pro ranks and the other class could be for lifelong 250 riders who simply don't suit the 450 bike.

That will never happen. Even if the participation were there, the money wouldn't be and it would fizzle anyway.

I'm for leaving the 250 class open to anyone. Let's do it!

But, if we do that, no more East/West. All 1 series, 17 SX rounds. We'd almost never see any privateers though. Is it worth doing that?
