If Feld doesn't step up in a major way (as in BIG $$ to the riders and teams), then they are f'cked. They already might be F'kd. At this point, I'm 100% certain attorneys are involved which is never good. I can guarantee that there were no safety procedures in place to prevent this from happening. Shoot, how much you wanna bet there wasn't an SDS to be found on the premises? Stand operating procedures?..Lol Testing and validation prior to use? Right....this could very well unravel quickly. The riders and teams need to be careful for what they wish for too, because while this was stupid on the part of Feld and Dirt Works, OSHA could shut the whole production down and in that case everybody loses (fans included). Given the severity of what's being shown on social media, this is an out of control freight train headed down a track that has no end in sight. We should all be very concerned.

FIM/geld/ama will have to pay for future medical to make sure this has not effected you {pro racers} or the 50 riders . It is a OSHA deal no matter what you signed to enter the race.

As much as I hate what SX has become, I feel bad for both track crew and promoters trying to put on the best show possible under extremely challenging conditions, and the riders who were unintentionally harmed.

There was no malice here folks and that should and will play a role into potential liabilities. Certainly doesn’t absolve anyone from responsibility. Just hate to see this for everyone involved.

Not good for the sport.

Wow. Where did you get that from? And is “quicklime” the same thing they put on the track?

Before everyone bashes the track builders ask yourself if you ever complained about track conditions? Obviously looking at things right now Lime is a horrible idea, but sending it off a rutted triple isn’t exactly safe. If the only issue was skin irritation, I would say “ Lime those faces”.

I am guessing this situation won’t be cheap for Feld, hoping they can work out a settlement with riders and teams, then use it as a learning experience. I do fear this might be a long drawn out class action suit with lawyers getting rich, hopefully some positive changes can come about as Feld and the racers need each other. This will be a defining moment in the history books, much like when the lights went out in Vegas.
https://www.cleartech.ca/ckfinder/userfiles/files/MSDS/Calcium%20Hydrox…

That link is a Material Safety Data Sheet that is a requirement for all chemical produced. It list the compounds, safety, handling, health affects and many other things. You may want to take a gander at it before comparing it sending it off a triple. It’s more than skin irritation and can blind you in the right concentration. For more than what happened Saturday lime should not be used ever again as a drying agent. I bet riders and staff that are now somewhat educated on it are now remembering all those eye irritations, throat irritations and the like.

This was the perfect storm that surfaced a much larger issue to exposure that is unjustified. I am befuddled that the order was to put lime down after they uncovered the track knowing that a downpour was headed towards the stadium. They were talking about it on raceday live and showing the radar in the stadium with the line of storms near. Even with the drizzling the skidsterers were still working the track up to the point where bottom fell out. At what point did they think the grooming and the addition of lime was going to “save” the track 1 to 1.5 hrs before the show with a line of sever rain within minutes of falling. I was watching the two skidsteers mix the pile of lime and dirt mixture they had set aside for filler as the rain was falling. I know these guys were just doing as they were told but I am curious as to who calls these shots. Don’t need names just the position or positions has my interest.

Don't kid yourselves, this has the potential to royally screw up everything. Fortunately people can be bought, and the players have some real deep pockets.

When I saw them pulling the tarps right as the radar showed the heavy rain band about to start I was surprised they didn’t just keep it on until it passed. They could have seeded the top 20 in points right in and then do 2 quick 10 minute qualifiers after it passed.
Then when I saw the mudfest I was thinking how do you even clean that up after and Petco Park/Padres must love seeing mud flung everywhere.

I never imagined that it would be allowable to add such an enormous amount of lime to the dirt. California has a regulation for everything so I’d be surprised it’s just ok to add whatever chemicals you want to the dirt. If there are no regulations I’m sure there will be a bunch now.

What are the chances that supercross actually unravels from all of this? Will this effect people’s ability to show up for minneapolis??

I am asking because firstly I am concerned about a whole lot of people’s well being, but also because I live in minneapolis and have been looking forward to the race for months. Of course this issue is much larger than one round, but I’m curious about the series as a whole.

If lawsuits start flying around, I can't see any scenario that ends well for Dirt Wurx, Feld's contractor for probably all aspects of the dirt.

If Feld gets sued, they are are going to argue no involvement or counter-sue Dirt Wurx. Feld has deep enough pockets that they could easily severe ties and bury Dirt Wurx in legal costs for years. They'll just go out and hire another contractor.

My thought is Feld is busy working with their legal team on how to address the issue because an improperly worded response could hint wrong-doing.

I’d say Feld’s biggest liability is the KTM kids/parents.

You really think KRoc won’t show up to race because he’s got caustic burns?

Privateers want to race too.

Feld will apologize without apologizing tomorrow. And they’ll say they’re taking steps to work with whoever so that this doesn’t happen again either by seeking out an alternative to lime or using it more judiciously. They will also state that the safety of the participants and fans is their top priority.

And Supercross will go on.

If Feld doesn’t have the riders backs on this and right the situation, privateers included, I am not sure how many are going to have interest in providing Felds “show” in Minneapolis. Hell many of them may not even have rideable bikes by then. Gotta be on the road by atleast Thursday.

That's the problem here, their pockets aren't as deep as you all seem to think. In the end it's just a business decision. The people making the decision don't have the passion that we do. It's not a hard decision to make, pull the plug.

Many of the same guys crying about this lime wouldn't blink twice about getting burnt to a crisp on a boat every weekend and giving themselves skin cancer..... which does kill people.

I think we can all agree it's a crappy situation. I know Feld and Dirt Wurx meant no harm to anyone. But what's done is done. I'll bet if they step up to the plate and offer to help the rider's and teams , it'll go a long way on repairing things. In the long run , I'm sure everything will be fine , and honestly it all depends on what they say tomorrow. It could either help them save face , or it could get really bad , which won't help the series look any better.

Thank you.

To all of those asking "why did they put down so much lime if they knew it was going to rain"

A freak chain of events.

No one in that stadium had the background or knowledge to say the standing water might be acidic, we need to test.

Feld is the promoter, Dirt Wurx is the contractor. Guarantee the contract between the two has some sort of clause that safeguards Feld from anything dirt related.

Calm down. Nothings going to happen. The show will go on this weekend. Like many my intial reaction was to be pissed, but think about it, do you really think Dirt Wurxs or Feld would want to intentially harm their athletes or show? The answer is no. And as far as the lawsuit goes, proving intent to harm the riders will be a stretch especially since they’ve used it for years without the issues that came up this weekend. Possibly they got a bad supply or as other pointed out, it reacted with something else out of their control.

It’s a bad situation, if anything, count it as a lesson learned and hope they explore other options for either domed venues or alternative drying agents.

How many riders total are we talking about who could have been affected? Was there 40 riders in both classes who tried to qualify? And another 20 KTM juniors? Maybe potentially 100 riders? Were there any reports of track workers, mechanics, security guards, etc being affected? I'm not an Esquire but I don't believe the waivers would protect the promoter in this situation if it's deemed there was improper or reckless use of the chemical (unintentional of course).

I would say guess someone is going to pay big, and hopefully, it doesn't affect the series. Where are all the Vital Esquires who can confirm?

So that is OHSA approved. Let’s see the document an the release of every person that said lime is ok . Not a race release but a chemical release. Cuz in my world I have to have a signed release of chemical use ? They will go on no problem except for the smart people that get paid with a gag order. WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN BANNED FOR LIFE YET JUST DO IT !

Nothings going to happen. You hit the key word, intent. Proving that will be next to impossible especially since they’ve used it for years without last weekends issues. It’s not like they can measure they water failing from the sky, or the PH levels of the dirt, and come up with the perfect ratio of lime to elements to help dry the track. No one can. Not in the time setting they had. It’s a bad situation. Wounds will heal, lesson learned, be glad no one got hurt worse.
