I’ll just say this......

I was picking up graphics yesterday at a certain graphics company and a run of 12 sets of graphics was being done for JGR with the number 22 on it. And there were sets done already. My last name is Ray, so I saw them laying next to mine when I picked mine up.

I wasn’t referring to the actual business end of the discussion by the actual team and potential riders as others mentioned above because I totally understand that. I was referring to the discussion and speculation that happens on the open forum. I know if I was his father or fiancé and saw this thread I would probably be a little disappointed in the fact that A few days after my sons face was smashed that everyone started speculating on who was replacing him... but I guess I’m the one out of touch with reality with so many disagreeing with me, and I am ok with that!

JGR is not in good shape budget wise. They won't have all the 250 guys they want and even with Peick's injury not sure they'd afford Reed.

I don't think Reed will solve the problem of filling WP's saddle in SX and Outdoors, since (even though I totally respect Chad Reed) he is not a real threat for a podium in SX at all. Dean Wilson, on the other hand probably is...and is quite capable outdoors as well.

MEC is a one-off with more than a few riders not present that Reed would have to beat if he were on the line at any given regular-season SX. Yeah, he got third there...but how many did he get in the 2018 season? How many in the 2017? I'm not slagging the guy...I'm a fan, but the main reason you sign Chad Reed any more is for the publicity. The Reeds are masterful Social Media manipulators too...and JGR could use some hype.

No downside to getting Reed signed up and certainly more incentive or urgency now. Seems like the logical move.

I know Reed is an all time great but I think he's going to have a tough year in 2019. Unlike previous years you have two champions moving up from the 250's, you gave guys coming back from injury, and you have Cooper Webb steeping up his program with KTM/Aldon who could also leap frog Reed in the results.

How many 450 SX champions will be racing in 19 ? Reed knows how to do it . Has done it . And is able to do it again .

Cooper Webb isn’t leapfrogging anything. He’s going to finish in the same place he’s been finishing. He isn’t motivated to train. It’s self-admitted.

Will Peick be back by nationals? At the moment it just sounds like he's dealing with jaw injuries, mainly. In that case, I wouldn't be surprised if he's back on the bike around February/March, or sooner and racing nationals. Obviously we don't know the extent to his injuries, but you guys are talking about his replacement for all of 2019. If all goes according to plan, JGR should have Hill and Peick on the 450 outdoors. If I missed an announcement that said Peick won't be ready by Hangtown, then excuse this post.

Just some random, related questions that I don't know the answer to:

For a guy like Peick, what costs more to the JGR team - Peick's salary, or the expense of his bike and getting it to the races, and the support crew at the events?

If Peick is unable to race in 2019 due to injury, does JGR still pay him?

Was JGR supporting him for the France SX, and if not does that change the answer to the previous question?

Does Reed expect to be paid a salary to race in 2019, or is he satisfied if he can just get a factory team to pay for bikes and support?

The business side of this sport interests me, but very little of it is publicly known. (Compared to big sports like the NFL, where we know a lot more.)

I would guess that WP is under contract for SX and outdoors only. I could be wrong, but I think these off season SX races are on the riders own dime with some support by the regular sponsors. The racers are sub contractors and carry their own insurance. A podcast with MCR said they they provide the insurance for the rider and I believe that they are the only ones in the industry that do it. As for Reed, I can’t imagine that he would take a free ride and no pay for JGR. Why would he risk it at his age?

At this point is Reed doing it for the money? I assume he is doing it because he loves racing and maybe wants to reach some career milestones. Reed is what, 36 years old and he is married with 3 or 4 kids. It’s the risk or reward question that people with a family need to ask themselves. Look what happened to WP. Aside from the pain, disfigurement and time off work is the money that he will have to come up with to cover what insurance doesn’t. Sure, he would probably want to ride for free, but if he gets hurt this year he could be screwed.

Reed's been in australia with his family and will be heading over to new zealand for this weekends race there. Wouldn't have been a simple task to get him over to Paris on short notice given the JGR guys were last minute additions after Marvin dropped out. Its a bit more of a trek from this side of the world.
Reed posted on his IG that he'd have liked to race Paris, but it wasn't logistically possible.

The question was for 2017 or 2018.

WP (get well soon) had 0 podiums. Reed had one.

If you want to go back to 2015, you will find Weston's two career SX podiums. Of course, Chad had 2 podiums including a win that season, followed by three more podiums in '16

Some people are turning this into a Reed Vs WP thing, and that is not at all what I intended my post to be. Weston Peick is a great dude with a ton of grit and has done great with where he came from. Reed is one of the all time greats nearing the end of a prolific career. This was just simply about will Reed be under the JGR tent now for sure. Prior to the accident it was up in the air.

I just wanted to look at the business aspect of this sport (Who will fill in), we don't disrespect any rider who is hurt.

Just sayin!

I remember JT saying on pulp that he estimated Reeds Fox deal to be $500,000 a year, I’d say his personal sponsors are more than enough and he would just want the Bike, parts and team.

He’s commited to the FIM Oceania championship which is the two Aus X events he races this weekend in New Zealand. He may not have won but he still rode well Sydney was really slick. He’s got plenty of time before A1
