X-Ray vision? I see a small nic or gouge at the rear lower area where the rod would have hit and a chunk broke off the front lower. I see no side shot of the bore. I also see only one pic of the underside of the piston.

Oh, I know where the bolt is. Just having a hard time wondering why 70% of the others can't see it. I would like to see some more pics of the piston, the inside of the cylinder and the underside of the head. When you pulled the piston out, was the pin and upper part of the rod still in the piston or out loose in the engine?

You and the engine builder still on speaking terms? Has he offered any input or has he still not seen the damage?
I dont photos of the piston or head. I ended up selling the bike as is. Just decided to move on. Motor builder showed zero interest in looking at it to see what happened. Never offered to look at it when it first happened.

Bummer deal with this bike. Wouldn't expect the guy to give up a new engine for free, but maybe offer at least a look at it.

Well kawasaki isnt going to warranty a 25 hour bike with a motor that wasnt maintained by a kawasaki tech. Dude sounds stupid. “I checked the crank and it was good but the crank could have caused it”. Shut the hell up. Ive never been a professional mechanic and i know better than to say dumb shit like that. Ill bet you anything that circlip for the wrist pin is in the bottom end or still on that morons desk.

At the end of the day man we can sit here and try to guess what happened but none of us are going to know without the parts in hand.

I feel bad that this happened to you. Kawis are solid bikes. Yea the OEM cast pistons aren’t the greatest but are any cast pistons? They dont go in 25 hours thats for sure. Tons of people get a lot more out of them.

The bud and brother sound goofy, but I guess I fail to see where he refused to tear down your bike? Looks like you mentioned tear down and shortly afterwards posted up pics. Looks like you made mention of a bolt being in the bottom end which was quickly disproved. Still not seeing where the mechanic did anything wrong at this point.

Hate to see your engine shit the bed like that, but things happen. If you were okay with dumping the bike and moving on, who are we to argue that. Someone got a good aluminum frame project out of the deal!Smile

Good luck with the new one!

There is enough room for the wristpin to migrate to one side and lose engagement with the other pin boss. look at the inside of the remaining pin boss and you can see the scuff marks where the edge of the wristpin was rubbing the inside of the boss.
Yeah, I've been doing to many two strokes lately & didn't go back and look at pics. I have a feeling you may be right. I forgot the design of this type of piston......

I am ultra paranoid about circlips. JE Piston install directions are to seat the circlip with blow from wrist pin from opposite side...............

This will sound smart a$$ but there's really nothing you can do other than find a motor and start over. The engine builder will not cover this after 25 hours and I'd be leary of him touching more of my motors based on what you've said his response is. May be cheaper to get another bike than a motor. Lots of new 17 and 18 KX's out there.

There is a big difference between a trained professional and someone that does certain tasks for their profession....

CP has an install tool that makes it easy to not mess them up

Bummer about the old bike, but congrats on the 19! Hope you guys can find a better mechanic that is more thorough and more willing to help look at everything if there is ever an issue. If I had done that top end for you, I would have told you to bring it to me immediately.

Here is a prime example of why I do all my own work. I refuse to pay someone to fuck something up that I can fuck up for nothing. Being out of parts is bad but being out of labor makes it really suck. I've never had a catastrophic failure like that before. Good luck OP.

I was going to do it myself. But I figured I'd rather have a guy that does this for a living do it. Last thing I wanted to happen is a motor to seize in the air during a moto. Which it did anyways. Lesson learned.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't trust any mechanic. Just do research on them and get other opinions. Also putting him on blast might get him to do something about it, thrashing him might make him co-operate since word of mouth gets around and might make him lose business.
