I’m not sure what to think about Honda’s business model of releasing a works edition at the same time as the regular model. Makes their regular model seem second class to me. With KTM having them at different times of year the FE offers some goodies but much of the value is you get the new year’s bike earlier. It doesn’t seem to take away from the regular model the way the Honda does, to me anyway.
Pings initial impression is that he couldn't really feel a big difference in the standard and WE in power even with the ported head. Suspension is really personal and subjective. I would try and work the best deal I could on a standard bike and then add the pipe, if you really must, and have it mapped for the pipe. You might end up with a better performer for less money.

I would probably try to build exactly what I wanted as well. I'm only referring to the business model, I think KTM has a better model by introducing a new bike around the new year.

Can a guy just buy the WE head? Seems that's the really trick part. Isn't the rest off the shelf stuff? The ecu can be tuned to hrc specs by a shop. Pipe is on the Internet at lots of shops

I wonder if there will come a day when you can buy just the frame, engine and suspension like you can with bicycles, and piece the bike together yourself.

What I would do is create a partnership between a manufacturer and a parts supplier, a perfect example being KTM with Rocky Mountain. Imagine if you could go to RM and order a KTM kit with a frame, engine and suspension for $6-7K, and then through RM get a deal on the wheels, plastic, clamps, bars, etc. It would be a huge differentiator for KTM and provide more value to the customer, all while reinforcing the race-team relationship.

I’ll likely be doing it on a ‘19 CRF450RX or R, too.
When you get the “WE”, you’re still getting a bike that’s not sorted out for you.

Crazy that everyone complains about cost yet factory edition, rockstar edition and works edition sell quite well. Kawi would be crazy not to jump in with a legit monster edition.

Good luck getting that head at a good price, plus the suspensions coatings alone set you back big bucks, the rest of the stuff sure you might be able to buy (although the exhaust is a one off)..

The standard CRF450R doesnt get A-Kit suspension. Its also a SOHC with the cam on the intake and rockers going to the exhaust. Finally on top of all of this its the lightest Japanese 450, then you get the adjustability of the KX too. The KX is beast mode this year in standard form.

I was thinking on getting one but after that review if the the standard R which you can get for close to 8k in a month or so .

That’s crazy/unfortunate that you all are paying nearly 12k for a new KTM or Honda. My brother just picked up a 2019 KTM 450 xc-f 2 weeks ago for $9,500 otd.

And the xc-f has a higher MSRP than the sx-f...
