I think a version of the TTR125 in that price range with the current 85s suspension/brakes would have broader appeal.
I agree on that. I'd even be in the market for a ttr 50/110 with some decent suspension for my 6yr olds instead of looking at a Cobra.

Doesn't it work out to be cheaper now for a new 450 (9k FOR YAMMIE ) when you figure in inflation. Not to mention it lasts a shit ton longer . I think now bikes are cheaper than the were 15 years ago when you add in what you get , shit my 03 yz 250 was over 5500

My dad paid $998 cash for my new cr80 in 1985 lol.

Even though you must take into account these factors:

-It was 2006,
-I worked at a Yamaha Dealer and got bikes at cost,
-Yamaha gave dealership employees a bonus for selling YZs at the time, which I applied to the bike,

I paid about that much out the door for an '06 YZ250.

Significantly cheaper hear in OZ than the Kato/husky.
I know what I'd get if it was here a year ago..Blue
How much are they going to be here? There is only $1000 difference between the kx and ktm 65's now, if it fits in the middle of those I will be stoked

Same price as a KX 100!
At 5'8" 150 lbs I've seriously thought about getting a KX 100 for another bike to ride. I rode a super mini last summer and it fit me almost perfect. Lol. They are so much bigger that the old 80's.

I think the problem there is the EPA. Unless you can give a bike a "competition only" designation it now has to meet a newer emissions standard. For sure in CA if you wanted a green sticker bike it would. Those bikes are stuck in time because they are grandfathered in. There is no way to meet those standards with air cooled, 2 valve, carbed engines. They can continue to sell them but they can't change them. Its the same reason Kawasaki never updates the KLR650.

I paid $900 for a 1983 CR125R, which was one of the best bikes I ever rode.

I don't blame you man. You can literally build a race ready KX65 for 2 grand that will have 90% of the performance of the KTM/YZ. Most kids will never require that additional 10% of bike. (Even though most mini Dad's would take a 2nd mortgage out on their house to put their kid on a bike that was 10% better than their competition, lol)

Buy a used KX65 and throw some upside down forks on it. My buddy just did it for his sons 65. I think it was about $1,300 for the front end setup and the rear shock too.

And be illegal at any race but a small outlaw race.
Care to explain the illegal part? Team Green has had tons of their 65 kids racing the upside down forks on them in the more recent past, the only place they aren't allowed to my knowledge is the stock classes at the national races

Oh mini dad threads...so much fun.

I don't anticipate my kid ever needing the 10% more than the KX65 can do which is the YZ65/SX65. If anything he will grow so fast his time on a 65 will be extremely limited.

The only good thing about buying a YZ65 or SX65 is the higher resale. Green bikes lose all their value quickly IMO.

Sorry, you are right. In the mod. class they can run them per MX Sports. I had it in my head they had to use stock clamps and fork tubes.

I was so excited for this bike and was hoping to get one for my daughter's birthday next year, but I cant justify $4599 for a 65. I'll buy a used kx for $700

No, you can't. Unless you are racing the beginner class. For less that $2k you can buy a 09-15 KTM 65sx that is leaps and bounds better than the KX bone stock. I know we have raced/owned them all. Once a kid starts pushing the KX hard the chassis & suspension just can't handle it. I agree than mini pricing is getting out of hand but the pipe-dream of the KX65 still being a contender is getting old. Usually it comes from mini-dads who haven't tried them or whose kids just tool around. Which is just fine but that doesn't mean it works at higher levels. Heck, look at the post before mine where the guy had to buy expensive forks just to come close to the KTM's level? Forks which I believe are no longer even made........

It would be nice to see some more color on the starting line .KTM has such a Stranglehold on those classes now it's not even funny and the only time you see a Kawi or yami if it's one of the factory teams kids and that's it

Okay its cool i knew it was like that for awhile wasn't sure if they had changed the rules more. Always thought the upside down forks on the kx 65's looked trick

long time, close friends with a family that owns 2 yamaha dealerships and they told me yamaha is only producing 200 of these bikes to meet homologation rules between now and lorettas in august, and that only a very few out of the total 1100 dealerships across the US will even be receiving any, only the top revenue producing stores in the country. he says they are only getting one per store
