Have ride al the japanse brands en now 5 years Ktm .
I have riding 2t for 30 years and had 4t in 2010 a crf450 of 08.
I still hated that thing it almost got me killed, and bought a yz250 from 05 I though thank God I coming home.
After that I buy a sx250 '10 sxs the best 2t I ever owend, but I sell it last year and because I found a '17 to expensive I bought a 16 sxf450.
I'm not in love with the bike but I also not hate the bike, I still fighting for a top 5 in my VT +45 and I'm still in a good shape but when I get tired it's like hitting a wall.
But after a while I been faster on the 4t than I was ever on the 2t.
We only have sandtracks and it's so much easier with the 4t when it's heavy, it's so powerfull 2t is only full throttle, on 4t you sit down and let the power come smoothly.
I still think 58,7 hp on the rear is to much for a amature (bike was on dyno) and i still thinking of buying a 350.
Practice wonder only these days. Not much free time with a young child and work schedule
Pretty much my work out is when I ride
Been back and forth between 450 and 250 2stk (300 SX at some point)
I'm still unsure on what's "best":
No racing so for me it's more about ease of riding/fun and cost factor
I have a 17 HVA TC250 and after dialing the jetting got it where it's not a handful
That being said, it's a 250 smoker and I have yet to ride one that provide the smooth/linear (I'd say electric) feel of a 450 FI.
My TC is running real good but it does not have the power delivery perfection/efficiency of these big 450's
Also no matter what, the 250 2t is more bouncy/skaty feel at times where the 450 just plow through ruts without even feeling it.
Last WE a buddy who like to poke on me for changing bikes every 6 months let me put several laps on his almost bone stock 15 RMZ. Well setup and we are close in weight
It didn't take long to realize that I was more relaxed and feeling less the track ruts/braking bumps than with my TC.
I could focus less on shifting/clutching, just relying on the massive (compared to the 2t) torque
But... No doubt also that thing is like a steam machine/freight train. It just wants to go and it does go fast rather quickly. Maybe more than I need or can manage.
I can see young guys/hard core racers or the ones in (much) better shape than me being able to handle this for long period of times.
When I brought back the RMZ, he asked me : so you're ready again for a 450?
I'd say if money was no option, I'd have both depending on how I feel that day and track condition
they are both fun, the 450 is just a bit too much at times and if you go sideways, that's a lot of mass and energy to bring back in line.
I rode a 17 350SXF 2 weeks ago, for me it was as heavy as a 450 but with not much more bottom end than a 250F
My most recent experience on 250F was a full day with a 16 250YZF. That thing was moving my large body fine for what I'm doing but gosh, I had to wring it like a 125 2t.
From a cost standpoint, I'm at a point where I need to be a bit more responsible with my finances and while dirt bikes were never meant to be an investment, $11300 average OTD to get hit with massive depreciation shortly after is no longer an option.
Market here is plain ugly, used bikes sit for sale for months, even the few clean ones. Dealers are no longer interested in trades.
For now I'm keeping the TC, might do a 300 conversion to add some low end torque.
Plus being in the dinosaur crowd is fun, and you can't beat the throaty sound of a well jetted 250
(take that and smoke it

I set the sag, put a new piston and fresh tires on and did not do anything else since 15 hours (except regular maintenance of course).
This thing is so much fun, awesome sound, suspension simply works, so easy to work on. It has got quite a bit less power than my last 450 (16 kx450f), feels rather like a modded 250f power wise. If i was you, i would simply go out and buy one and try it out for yourself. If you dont like it, you can probably sell it on the same day.
NOT!!
Switching from state of of the art for old technology, what the fuck is wrong with you guys??
Get your asses in shape and the 450 (or 350) is the most fun you can have with your pants on. Screw two strokes, I'd switch to a pussy game like golf rather than ride one of those things full time again.
You're not getting the point.
I'm not nostalgic about times when pig bladders would be used to make a lamp. I don't miss rotary dial phones either , dial up Internet,etc...
I'm a seasoned Aerospace Engineer, heavily involved in IT, Cloud based Data Management systems too.
What I'm trying to say is that 2 stroke is a proven and still working technology as is. Maybe even getting better with KTM/HVA TPI models.
Sure Tomac or Musquin won't win on any of them. I don't care what they ride, I'd still be giving them full respect for their skills no matter what.
Just look at some top off road/extreme races. Still a lot on stone age "tech".
As far as being a lard ass, you don't know me or my background so tone it down a notch.
I work a LOT on home improvement projects, do my yard work (2 hours) each week when youngsters drive by in their A/C top of the line Trucks (forgot to tell you I carry my antique in a 2009 work trim model, no crank windows though...)
I'm running a lot with my kid, we bicycle, swim
Wife and fatso have heavy work schedules, like many others around here (no complain, we could always switch to flipping burgers jobs, but then I could not afford even a 75 CR 125)
At 50, and with the little time left in packed days to moto or just getting ready for it, I just consider delusional (for me) pretending to muscle for 30 mins or more a very powerful fine machine like a 450 on a rather tight MX track.(my usual spot)
Yes 450 are awesome, for some.
I have a buddy with the same "I'm a man, grrr" approach you have. Being ejected and slammed by his 450 full steam took him a long recovery time, and he does not belong to the MX porkers association.
After re-assessing his ego and pride, he went to a 250 and still ripping, with no sign of testosterone decrease, or slower lap times (he's racing)
Oh, and I hate golf too with a deep passion.

Come complain to me when you are my age kid.
Not trying to be a tough guy, but this is a sport based on fitness. When I can't handle a four stroke anymore, one of the most forgiving bikes ever, that is when I walk away.
If I were forced to only own one bike....It would be a 250 two stroke, they are just so versatile.
450 is the biggest handicap the sport ever came up with.
Everyone is afraid to stop riding them because they don't want everyone to see how much their relying on 100% traction, and extra 200cc's and a docile power delivery, to get them around a motocross track.
I was born in '83, I went from 80 - 125 - 250cc all two stroke. I've never sold out for that 4T bullshit.
Ditch the hadicap, you're only cheating yourself.
I was in the same boat. From like 11-15 I "raced" quite a bit and only rode Honda 450s cuz all I knew and was told was "well you'll get better starts more often on a 450 vs a 250T. " (98% true) Tried to get out of the sport mid 2015 and of course 6 weeks later I said I'm just going to buy a new YZ250 to have fun on. Best. Decision. Of. My. Life. Loved it for a year but unfortunately I had to get out again to show bank I was debt free to buy a house, engagement ring, etc. (I'm 26)
So about 3 months ago after all my debt and "grown up" purchases were made it was time to get another bike to be a weekend warrior on. Immediately wanted a 2 stroke again but a 15 or newer. After 3 2T deals fell through I bought a 15 YZ450 from a buddy on a whim just to have a bike. Bike was SICK. Definitely my favorite 450 I ever ridden (FAST, handled well, suspension was great stock for a 200 lb rider, reliable, etc.) but it just wasn't a 2T fun. After only 4 rides and going to local tracks and seeing 2 strokes others were riding, I wanted to shoot my self in the foot for my impulse buy. So, 3 weeks ago I traded my 450 for a MINT 15 250SX and like Jeffro said. Oh. My. God. Can't stop smiling. Might not be as fast as I was on a 450, but who cares who wins practice?!? If you wanna race competitively hard core, 450 is prolly safest and best bet. BUT, you wanna have fun and just enjoy riding a dirtbike? The 250 2T or any 2T for that matter, (I'm way too big for a 125 personally), is the route to go. And your wallet is happier too haha
*side note*
The KTM 250T RIPS compared to the YZ and both of mine were 15s.
Have a 2003 Honda CR250 with '01 engine and a 2017 Husky TC250. The Husky does everything better than the Honda.
Are you really stuck on a Honda? I have more info if so.
EDIT: Forgot that period in the early 80s when I races the YZ465 every weekend for a couple years, 3rd gear starts, holeshot almost every Moto, then faded like a big dog, lol! went back to the CR250.....
