I raced more when I turned 30 then 40 then I did in my youth.

This pic was taken at the AZOTMX International where I raced my first 50+ Master class and got 3rd O/A. Having just as much fun if not more and I feel I got faster with age although I do not push the edge like you did when you are young & fearless.

Like Larry I too am amazed at how much fun I have riding and racing at this age and I still get excited the night before and driving to the races, but to me everything else is kinda boring....

I just wana see that pic with you covered in Choia

My dad is 65 and is still kicking ass on his KX500. I grew up with him racing D-37 desert, Viewfinders GP, CalCityGP, GreatBear GP, Carlsbad Raceway, Indian Dunes, Saddleback. I thank him every day for sharing his love of motorcycles with me. This is him racing amateur day at Glen Helen back in May.

I am 44 and still ride or race about 3 weekends a month. My son rides too and we were even in the same moto the weekend before last (m in 40+ and he was racing College boy b/c). Unfortunately he crashed and I stopped to check on him. I love this sport! Best family oriented thing for the entire family. My wife always comes to the races and even practices if we take the hauler for the weekend. I didn't get serious until I was almost 31 and always wanted too when I was a kid. Never to old I say. Sure I don't heal up like I used too and I don't take the bigger chances either but who cares. I am having fun, spending time with my wife and son doing something we all love. Can't think of anything better!

I'm 43 and race the OTMX races. My son and I are doing Top Gun at Washougal this weekend too.

I enjoy these races more today than any when I was younger, as the group is much nicer and although they race hard, they help everyone out when something good goes sideways. I've also met some of the nicest people doing these races.

You got my attention. Mind sharing the story? When'd you start racing and what class did you race at Loretta's? Despite my age (40 in Nov), I feel like the C class is a better bet than the vet classes at Loretta's.

I'm 52, and raced 3 years ago for the first time in 33 years. I raced again a couple times last year.
It's great!

The one thing I'm doing purposely to reduce risk is riding a 125. If I have a faster bike, I'll definitely ride it faster, so the 125 is a governor so to speak.

In my class (I'm racing 40+ beginner) the bike is less of a factor than the rider, so although I'm at a disadvantage, I like the way a 125 makes me ride. I have to work for it, and ride all out.

My advice is to wear as much protective gear as you can afford, and ride within your limits. (Ok, you can go a little bit past your limits, but not much!)

If on any day, you feel like you're losing concentration, that's your sign that it's time to call it a day.
If you're tired but still focused, that's alright, but when you start losing focus, get the hell off the track!

Enjoy!

I am 55 and started when I was 8. Tried to hang up the boots a few times and ended up back on the bike after a few years.

What's your input?
Thanks, Mark

My dad stopped in 2013 at 63 after a bad get-off and travel (we are 2-4 hrs each way to tracks) burned him out. I stopped too. Now I am 40, and my kids are starting to ride. I thought my bike days were done, but a couple weeks ago I picked up a CR250 to ride...here we go again...

The older I get, the more fun it is...because I care less about results, my gear, having the latest bike and how COOL I am. The whole point is to just get out there.

53 here, still ride and race a little for fun a few times a year. My wife is 42 and she rides a supermini and my 2 sons are on 85's. We can have 30 or more old timers at the gates here in the south....and some really fast guys still!

Piece of advice. If you still love and want to race MX, do it while you still can. Don't wait until you can't any longer.

I hear ya... I quit for quite a few years and my parents were happy I quit, I had some pretty good crashes that scared them. But then they bought my boys pw 50's for Christmas one year. Well I wasn't gonna sit around sweating at the track without having some fun too....
There's a big pro race in Tyler tx every year in October and some big name people show up. Canard, Windham, DV.. etc have all raced it plus tons of others, I raced the 450 pro class several years and had to qualify through heat races. I made the mains but was just a gate filler.... Although doing it when I was 43 years old felt good. But it is amazing how I could be riding my butt off and Windham or one of those guys blew passed me like I stopped on the track!!!!!! Us old guys can still be plenty competitive especially at local races, keep going guys!!!!!

My dad got his very first MXer this year at 73 years old. He's a Cahuilla Creek Wednesday morning regular now. I'm 43 and I race.
