Bananas are high in carbs which make them an important pre and post workout snack to build muscles (can pump up those arms too). They are also rich in protein which helps with metabolism boost and loose that excess fat. In addition to all this when taken before bed time it helps with the relaxation of muscles which is quite essential particularly after a rigorous workout.

In my case I had arm pump issues and my hands were falling asleep. I had taken a couple years off and during that time I was in the gym doing more strength training than I should have- Big Mistake. Just staying away from the weight rack and riding as much as possible helped my arm pump a lot, but I still had issues with my hands and wrists. I struggled with that until I ordered the wrong set of handlebars on accident once. I got a set of pro tapers with a lot of sweep in them which I was unsure about at first but holy crap did it instantly fix my problem. This obviously isn't going to solve everyone's problems but it certainly helped me by playing with different bends and lever angles.

A lot of people also swear by the 4 arm thing, I've personally tried it, it definitely helps for me but its not a miracle device.

IMO through trial and error over the years the #1 tool to fight against arm pump is being in good CARDIO shape.... when I ran 5 miles 4-5 times a week I never got arm pump.. .

Actually they have to be green banana's. They are the one's that really make you go fast.

Anybody remember who recommended them?
Actually it's really the same for ripe or green bananas for potassium.
Potassium is very important for heart and brain function as well. It has to do with your electrical built in battery function. Sodium and Potassium help control electrical function thus related to blood flow thus related to muscle function and decision making.

If you can't spring for the Fasstco Bars right away at least get the vibration reducing Fasstco bar inserts for now and when you wad up those pro takers.... I mean tapers... spring for the bars. I run the inserts and the bars but that's just meWink .
I started running the Fasstco setup in about 2000 and will always run them. When I switched to the setup I was good for 1 to 2 laps more depending on the track.
I've got an older set of these that I'd be willing to part with if you're interested. Just let me know and I'll get some pics.

I used to eat a couple of jars of Gerber banana baby food on race day... higher in potassium than bananas. I think it cured me... haven't got arm pump in about 15 years.

Man , I was pretty pumped to be back on the bike again after the break I had. That YZ450 was a fun bike but I only had it for like 3 months I think. I remember I went down again , broke a couple ribs and knocked my head a bit , and was thinking " Why the heck did I get back into this sport again!!?? " Sold it and sat out another 6 months before I gave it another shot , and been going pretty steady since. I am out due to a bad back at the moment though.

Glad I stuck with it. Been through like 10 bikes since then haha.

This is going to sound stupid and I can't remember where I heard this from. All I can say is that it stopped my arm pump. Do not sleep with your hands balled in a fist. Force yourself to keep you hands open. You probably don't even realize you're doing it until you think about it. Try it.
That's a carpal tunnel syndrome fix. There are braces made for it. Like others have said here practice relaxing your grip when you can. Death grip is the biggest cause of arm pump.

The thing is, that you can't eat a banana right before going riding and expect it to fix your arm pump issues...all the potassium in the world won't help in that same scenario.

You need to make banana's a regular part of your diet...that has the potential to increase your potassium levels enough to make a difference.

Arm pump, ultimately, is caused by squeezing the bars to tightly, riding tight (not just your grip, but your wrists, elbows and shoulders are to tense), and not breathing correctly. Trying a specific fruit, or hand grip, or handlebar are only band-aides...if you want to actually fix the problem, you have to learn to ride relaxed (hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders) and breath correctly. Then the arm pump will go away.

I want someone to try the Viagra thing and report back. To me, it seems like that drug does exactly the opposite of what we want as MX riders: creates compartment syndrome.
Plus, there's the added hassle of needing your chick at the races to help you with, uh, maintenance after each moto. Woohoo Whistling Evil

DO NOT TAKE ASPRIN BEFORE RIDING

It thins the blood thus increasing potential for bleeding in the brain in the event of a concussion.

On a side note, alcohol is known to thin the blood and I used to know some guys who swore ONE beer before a moto would help with arm pump.
Asprin is literally the only thing that you can 'take' that will help at all with arm pump. It helps slightly. Slightly.

Arm pump is caused by one of the following (or in most people's case, a combination of):

-Lack of seat time (most prevalent)

-Lack of cardiovascular conditioning (including heart rate control)
-Improper breathing or riding technique (including death grip and not using your legs)
-Improper suspension setup
-Lack of core/legs/lower back/shoulder strength (not size, STRENGTH) causing physical imbalances.
-Lack of hydration (or also an imbalance of sodium/potassium/calcium/magnesium)
-Nutritional imbalance of main macros (carbs/fats/protein)

Slow down just a bit, think about your body positioning, and form, try to relax. As the day wears on, your arms will get better. As you get in better riding shape, you can push harder. If you are in good shape, been riding alot, and still get arm pump, you're doing it wrong.

If you can stand to ride with full wood, in theory, it would help. Laughing

I've used a combination of Asprin and pre-workout in the past with, idk maybe a 20% improvement. I just don't really like a lot of caffeine on days that I ride. I try to keep my heart rate down as low as possible when riding, so it wasn't really a benefit.

I've always struggled with arm pump. I know exactly what causes mine though. Not enough seat time, which leads to a breakdown in technique, plus too much muscle/weight and too many wrist/thumb/elbow/shoulder injuries.

Pure banana Goodness. Life changing, I keep a box in my truck for whenever I go ride/race.

Typically intense cardio for 30 mins 3 days a week helps with that.
