How about the idea of announcing that he is retiring at the end of the season now, prior to the outdoors starting? Regardless of whether he wins the title or not?

Then, go racing with no pressure (so long as KTM are cool with it) and simply enjoy it at the highest level whilst conducting a farewell tour of sorts - similar to what RC did. Rock up each weekend fit and ready to go, but happy to take a top 5 if that's all he's got on the day. Sign autographs each weekend, thank everyone for the support over the years, then go out and just rip with the best in the world and enjoy it thanks to the insane fitness and skill base he's built up over the years. If there's a win there, take it, but if its beyond the comfort level, dial it right back and enjoy the scenery. No real aim for a championship (to begin with anyway).

Too far fetched? Especially for RD and Red Bull KTM? Waste of 3 months and a heap of resources if he's not in it to win it? Just an idea.

Im starting to get on with the idea the Dungey is done. Its a good time for him to stop plus someone would have seen him out testing for outdoors already. He hasnt cuz he aint going.

He said during the off week he did a lot of outdoor testing. Seems odd to do that and then not race it.

Really hope it's not true. I've been a big RD fan for a while now but this last SX season along with him not doing outdoors will not set well with me. He can do what he wants to do but as a fan I'd hope to see him try to to pull off one more championship in outdoors.

It must be a tough decision. If he stays, Tomac is faster right now. He may not want to get 2nd and prefer to leave on a win. What would be less pressuring mentally is to say he goes for a tour or sx only 1 season or 2 so nobody blame him for finishing 2 to 8th, taking it more easily than now. He could chose his venues too. At Vegas I was still amazed at how smooth he was. Like Reed he could still top 5 in 10 years! In all cases whatever he decide is good, he did really well as a role model for the sport and taught great values to the kids.

All this hate for Dungey and shit talking in this thread is incredible. He is by far the most consistent elite rider the sport has ever seen. Record 31 straight SX podiums. He hasn't finished worse than 4th since the 2014 East Rutherford SX. Also, he hasn't missed a single main event since 2012. Can the people talking down about this man even comprehend these stats?

Ryan is the only rider in the history of our sport that has been able to find a championship winning speed without pushing the edge. To be honest, Ryan's career start stats are mind boggling. You will be hard pressed to find a 250 Novice rider that's been racing 5 years with less injuries than Ryan.

Not to mention, Ryan has eight national championship and a regional SX championship. I know the guy is not flashy, but to say moronic statements like he's retiring because he is scared to battle, knows Eli will beat him or any other reason than he is ready to retire is absolutely ignorant hater shit.

When ever the question is raised about his future he sounds really jaded, so wouldn't surprise me.

Go out a champ. Fuck it. I can totally understand being under constant pressure, and the extreme training burns you out. He's the man to beat. The only thing worse than falling off the top is killing yourself to stay up there.

Just gonna make for one borrrring ass outdoor season. Maybe ando and musquin or even webb can steal some moto wins, but Tomac is gonna mop the floor with everyone if he stays healthy. He was gonna spank Dungey's ass most the time as well. But at least Dungey could have kept it reasonable.

I agree with you but I don't think it's that he would be scared to battle with Eli, it's that maybe he doesn't want to put in the work needed to battle Eli. Eli is elite and hungry. Dungey might not have anything left to prove his place in the sport, but there's always Something to prove. He would prove a lot by beating Eli this summer.

Mainly because guys like TripleFive are just shitty trolls and nothing more. They don't come on here and have decent conversations with other people. They just like to get people who actually like to have decent conversations all riled up. Must be a pretty shitty life if you ask me.

Dungey has been doing this long enough and has won enough championships that no one should be giving him a hard time about retiring. Tomac is a bad ass and would be extremely hard to best outdoors. If Dungey does retire, I hope Marvin steps it up and becomes more consistent so we can have a battle.

Eli has elite speed. He's nowhere near elite since he hasn't won any 450 titles though. With the 250 titles maybe he's great, but not even close to elite

Elite is guys like RC, RV, MC and RD. Guys who bring home the titles rather than just race wins.
